Now that she's the official nominee, is anyone else excited about Kamala Harris's chances?

Just to get it out of the way - I am completely against Trump being elected President. I'm pretty excited to see Kamala being officially nominated, and looking forward to her fighting a strong campaign - albeit slightly nervously. Anyone else?

No –– she's a genocidal monster, no better than Trump.

StripedPiggy · 02/08/2024 18:47

Harris is currently benefiting from very favourable media coverage & something of a bounce in polling during this honeymoon period. How much of this turns out to be real, and indicative of a step-change in public support remains to be seen.

The obvious concern is that it is being overhyped by the liberal mainstream media who are desperate for signs of hope that someone, anyone, can actually beat Trump. We’ll see.

BIossomtoes · 02/08/2024 18:48

I hope you’re right @twodowntwotogo. I really, really want you to be.

xyz111 · 02/08/2024 18:50

I can't bear Trump, so anyone would be better than him!!!

Um. No.

DiamondGoldandSilver · 02/08/2024 18:53

Yes, I am really excited about the prospect of the US having its first female president. Beating Trump would be a huge bonus too! How amazing would it be for the US to have a different type of leader. I think it would be a real game changer and good for women everywhere. This is with one major caveat- I completely disagree with her position on the trans issue, but I would still have her over Trump any day.

Aquamarine1029 · 02/08/2024 18:53

Absolutely not. She's horrendous.

DiamondGoldandSilver · 02/08/2024 18:54

For those who dislike her, what is your reasoning?

I've listened to her speak for more than 30 seconds.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/08/2024 18:58

Yes very

Especially if she picks Pete Buttigeig as her VP

MacDonaldandHobNobs · 02/08/2024 18:59

She's now leading in the national polls. She has raised more than double the amount Trump has in donations in one month. The upswell in support is very impressive.

Supporting her she has:

Beyoncé
George Clooney
Taylor Swift
Oprah
Obamas

Trump has

Hulk Hogan
Kid Rock
Alina Habba
34 felony convictions

I'd say she's stands a very good chance

I will shed tears of joy (and relief) if she wins but I'm really nervous. Trump is clearly completely inappropriate for the job but racism and misogyny is rife in the US. Are people willing to have a female bi-racial president? Of course she should win but there are a lot of stupid people out there. Brexit really taught me that.

DiamondGoldandSilver · 02/08/2024 19:01

Just curious @Aquamarine1029 are you male or female? I have heard her speak for more than 30 minutes and wouldn’t describe her as horrendous. Her background is also pretty impressive.

user556453 · 02/08/2024 19:01

I've also listened to her speak for a lot more than 30 seconds, and, yes, very excited and hopeful!

I guess you prefer the late great Hannibel Lecture, electric sharks and beep beep noises.

Yeah, give that man the nuclear codes!

What was it about her 30 second speech that put you off?

Molly70 · 02/08/2024 19:07

Well, the US economy is currently tanking so unless she and Biden can turn it around before November then she is probably toast.

DiamondGoldandSilver · 02/08/2024 19:09

@Molly70 are you sure that’s right? I understand it’s grown in the last quarter and is outpacing forecasts

This is Mumsnet. Guess. 🙄

ShinyNewMe · 02/08/2024 19:09

I've listened to her speak for a good deal more than 30 seconds and I think she's pretty fast thinking, and vigorous, unlike trump. The only slight fly in the ointment is I find her speech a bit nasal and I don't know if it's just me but it might be a drawback if anyone finds it slightly annoying. Having said that, in recent days it's taken a back seat somewhat as I'm now more impressed with what she says than how she talks. Given that I'm sick to the back teeth of hearing Trump's voice hers is an improvement.

There's also the Christian vote to consider, I was listening to a podcast today where a young Christian woman (American) said Kamala mustn't win and went on about her childlessness. It was dreadful. Apparently it's because Trump is anti-abortion and that's the main reason why many Christians there are supporting him.

Molly70 · 02/08/2024 19:07

Better not give it to Trump then, who exponentially increased the US national debt during his tenure.

Tbh, every tantrum Trump throws in public is making him less and less electable. The polls are clearly showing how his popularity is decreasing on a daily basis, which makes him spiral more in panic.

J.D Vance is the nail in his coffin. That guy is just weird. In fact they're both just weird and creepy.

LeedsZebra90 · 02/08/2024 19:13

She wouldnt be my first choice and unfortunately I don't think the swing states will vote for her in the numbers they need to. The BBC and mainstream UK media will make her seem a lot more popular than the reality in the states right now. I do really hope she wins, but I don't think she will.

Molly70 · 02/08/2024 19:15

The debt only increased under Trump because of Covid

EsmaCannonball · 02/08/2024 19:16

She wouldn't have been my choice of candidate but if I were American I would vote for any Democrat nominee over Trump. My concern is she could end up being one of those politicians who wins on social media but not in reality. Got to admit, she is doing better than I expected right now but that's mainly due to the Democrats putting on a united front than to her performance.

Although I think a female president would be important in showing that it could be achieved, I really don't get all the 'Woo! A female president!' stuff. Ultimately, it's the character and the policies of the person that count. I guess when you've sat through Margaret Thatcher, Theresa May and Liz Truss you know the symbolism doesn't amount to very much in the end.
