Now that she's the official nominee, is anyone else excited about Kamala Harris's chances?

Just to get it out of the way - I am completely against Trump being elected President. I'm pretty excited to see Kamala being officially nominated, and looking forward to her fighting a strong campaign - albeit slightly nervously. Anyone else?

Possibly excited by her chances, and that there is now a chance it's not Trump. Not at all excited by her though, and very sad that if the US finally get a female president it'll be an extremely underwhelming candidate who is only being considered as a protest vote against Trump. I'm also finding the remarkable change in attitude towards her very uncomfortable - a few weeks ago the entire media were loudly despairing the fact that she was a massive disappointment with even less chance of winning than Biden, and speculating hopefully who might potentially be flown in to replace the pair of them. Now all of a sudden she's been an exemplary VP and will certainly be an amazing president and she's definitely everyone's first choice, and definitely would've been even if they'd had a full contest. I don't personally enjoy feeling quite so overtly manipulated.

I thought the only death that day was one of the rioters?

Police Officer Brian Sicknick
After serving in the Air National Guard and dreaming of becoming a police officer, Brian D. Sicknick joined the Capitol Police force in 2008. He died the day after he was overpowered and beaten by rioters from the mob at the Capitol
.

9 deaths in total have been attributed to that day.

What short memories people have. Trump is the only president in US history who has incited a mob to attack democratically elected colleagues for simply doing their jobs.

I would like there to be a capable president. Voting for someone because they’re “not Trump” is not good enough!
It’s not good enough in this country either where we’ve ended up with not-Sunak!

We’ve ended up with a PM with more intelligence, integrity and gravitas in his little finger than the whole Tory party put together. We’re bloody lucky to have him, just as the US would be to have Harris.

WildLemur · 02/08/2024 21:46

Let's also not pretend that it's only the left that says that Trump nearly overthrow democracy and will try again. Conservatives have been bragging about it publicly, too.

Jack Posobeic at the opening day of CPAC (to applause and cheers):

"Welcome to the end of democracy. We are here to overthrow it completely. We didn’t get all the way there on January 6, but we will endeavor to get rid of it and replace it with this, right here. All glory is not to government. All glory to God.”

They aren't even hiding it, yet still some deny it.

I don’t think you can prove that all deaths were caused by the riots. For example some cause of deaths being myocardial infarction (heart attack). They were likely unrelated. Stress is not a big risk factor for MI.

WildLemur · 02/08/2024 21:42

At the absolute minimum it would have thrown the country into a constitutional crisis.

And I do not have your faith that the current Supreme Court would have ruled against Trump.

When the US Supreme Court makes a ruling, it’s for a reason that can be found in existing US law. People can argue about interpretations of laws, but SCOTUS doesn’t just pull complete nonsense out of their asses. They have labored-over judicial opinions with citations and legal history and past case law.

What legal history and past case law do you think they would use to rule in favor of the US being ruled by a dictator-for-life?

qwerty14 · 02/08/2024 21:48

I found this conversation about her interesting, the debate with Tulsi Gabard and her first disasterous campaign, they suggest she's not particularly principled but changes her policies a lot and is a bit under prepared sometimes.
Might be better than Trump though.

I’ve just looked this up and it says Sicknick died of a stroke. It’s not like he was shot or anything.

Most of the other deaths appear to be overweight rioting Trump supporters having heart attacks!

ShinyNewMe · 02/08/2024 21:50

I've yet to see anyone on Mumsnet explain why she's a monster or why she's so terrible

Well of course she's not. That's just what Magadonians want you to think. So they keep on saying it. Trump's fanbase is relatively small, just the uneducated rednecks. So she'll win.No doubts at all.

He’s been in power less than a month and the bloody country is engulfed in riots! There are police cars and double decker buses being set alight!

Seriously, that is your take away from a former president inciting a riot!

They were lucky more people didn't die that day.

nietzscheanvibe · 02/08/2024 21:38

And Trump speaks more sense? 🤔

The question wasn't about Trump, was it? Enough with the "but what about Trump?!" comeback any time another candidate or potential candidate is being discussed. It is so fucking tedious. The question was about Harris, as was my answer.

Yeah, being beaten by a mob. Its not like he was shot or anything 🙄 Tell that to his family. What a disgusting attitude.

I can't wait for the DoJ to get the case against Trump into court so all the Jan 6 evidence is released into the public domain. That will be an eye opener.

No I’m just saying it’s incorrect to say the riot directly caused 9 deaths.. because it isn’t true.

halava · 02/08/2024 21:57

There seems to be some desperation in the Trump camp now. Lots of mud will be slung in the coming days, in addition to what has already been thrown around.

I think you are totally wrong. I think she has injected some dynamite and she is a breath of fresh air that the US NEEDS. She has background and experience.
She has folks behind her to advise.

Trump is just a sad old sack. Who wouldn't vote for her over hin?

FayeGreener · 02/08/2024 21:58

People really need a better reason to vote for Kamala than “Trump is going to be a dictator and we know because HE SAID SO”.

They also need a better reason than “Trump is a bit horrid orange man!”

Some evidence that Harris has some sort of undeviating Moral code would help.

That was caused by right wing thugs looking for a fight not Keir Starmer. I'm not a fan of Starmer but you can't blame right wing hooliganism on him, don't be daft.

I think we should take any election manifesto with a huge pinch of salt. So many promises are made then defaulted on by the person in charge. I’m sure we could all cite a ton of manifesto promises that never came to fruition over the years. I especially like the claim from John Edwards! 😯

God, John Edwards…John Kerry must still be cursing the day he picked Edwards as a running mate. The theory was that Edwards, as a senator from North Carolina, would could compete with Bush for votes in the south. At 51, he was relatively “youthful” for the office, and that was supposed to work in the Kerry campaign’s favor too.

Instead, he acted like the slickster trial attorney he was, added nothing to the campaign, and - a few years after Kerry lost - secretly fathered a child while cheating on his dying wife.

I'm not about to attempt to render a judgment myself.

Will you at least accept that Donald Trump and many of his allies made a concerted effort to overturn the election results and that many in his orbit have indicated that they will try to do so again?

paperrockscissors · 02/08/2024 22:01

SpuytenDuyvil · 02/08/2024 22:02

We are very excited. We live in California where there are almost 35 million inhabitants, about half of the population of the UK, just for comparison. She was Attorney General, which is the most important law enforcement position in a state, and then was elected Senator, of whom there are only 100 in a country of almost 340 million. She was my personal choice for VP. I have great hopes. BTW, at the times of her campaigns, she was known to be biracial.

deltablue · 02/08/2024 22:03

No. In no way. Ever.
