Now that she's the official nominee, is anyone else excited about Kamala Harris's chances?

Just to get it out of the way - I am completely against Trump being elected President. I'm pretty excited to see Kamala being officially nominated, and looking forward to her fighting a strong campaign - albeit slightly nervously. Anyone else?

No –– she's a genocidal monster, no better than Trump.

Please explain.

It's not dislike, but she's not very bright, has failed spectacularly as VP in the 2 remits she was given and is in no way suited to being President

This is ridiculous. Look at her record of achievement, then consider for a moment that a successful woman has to be twice as good as a man. The same goes for a person of colour. She’s amazing.

No it isn't where are your sources for that

Today’s job figures and unemployment rate (always released on the first Friday of the month)

bridgetreilly · 02/08/2024 21:14

I think she might get the Obama-style grass roots support.

FayeGreener · 02/08/2024 21:15

Doesn’t Kamala owe her early success to the er…”sponsorship” of much older political bigwig Willie Brown?

(Im aware this is a sexist trope. Doesn’t mean it’s not true in her case).

Are you saying Donald wasn't speaking the truth.....shocker.

What he says there is terrifying. He’ll have ‘fixed it so good they won’t need to vote’? Is he going to change the law to ensure he stays on à la Venezuela, regardless of votes/outcome? 😱

MacDonaldandHobNobs · 02/08/2024 21:16

Anyhoo stepping away now.

See you at the Crazy Cat Lady celebration party in November. It's going to be epic 😎

He will be impeached if he does that (by the House and Senate)

But people who are against Trump contradict themselves don’t they? On the one hand they say “everything Trump says is a lie” and on the other hand they say “oh my god! He said he’s going to be a dictator for life!”

You can’t believe a) and still be scared of the prospect of b).

Yes, that's the biggest worry - that the MAGA cultists intalled as election officials will falsely claim irregularities and Mike Johnson will use it to overturn the election and install Trump. The Trumpian Project 2025 freakshow have been winking that everything is in motion, and that they're prepared to use violence if need be.

A big Kamala win would, you would hope, make it harder to steal, but there is a chance the the US dies as a democracy later this year.

The polls give me hope but, as you say, a Kamala win doesn't mean Trump won't be president again.

America has never been a democracy, they have a constitution. It still amazes me how few people seem to understand that.

Dichotomy, indeed. Having said that, I wouldn’t be completely amazed were he to try something like b.

And Obama said you could keep your doctor if you liked your doctor. He wasn’t able to do that, either. You’re confusing what politicians say with what they’re actually able to do. (My favorite “stupid politician claim” was from John Edwards, VP candidate in 2004. “When John Kerry is president, people like Christopher Reeve are going to walk, get up out of that wheelchair and walk again.” Gee, if only we’d elected Kerry! 🙄)

Not a fan of Trump, but if he were able to install himself as some kind of dictator-for-life, he would have done it already. It’s not within his power.

halava · 02/08/2024 21:24

The scary thing is that DT is not stupid, but he acts stupid and mad as a brush to match himself to his electorate. Sad but true.

Cherrysoup · 02/08/2024 21:25

I think we should take any election manifesto with a huge pinch of salt. So many promises are made then defaulted on by the person in charge. I’m sure we could all cite a ton of manifesto promises that never came to fruition over the years. I especially like the claim from John Edwards! 😯

WildLemur · 02/08/2024 21:26

I find it batshit that people think Harris is thick.

There are plenty of Attorney Generals who I don't much care for, but nobody who ascends to that office (particularly in the most populous state in the US) ascends to that office.

The "word salads" too...almost every politician has those moments. If you listen to Harris speak, more than 99% of what she says is perfectly articulate. Dredging old videos for pretty trivial slips and pretending they are representative of her in general is a massive stretch (particularly when a single Trump speech will contain more word salads than Harris has amassed in her whole career).

I'm happy to accept she is likely not the strongest candidate the Dems could put forward but she is magnitudes better than Trump in every single way.

Were it not for the US's unfit and politicized court system, Trump would be rotting in prison by now.

FayeGreener · 02/08/2024 21:27

I must say I think the “you can’t vote for Trump! He’ll declare himself LIFELONG DICTATOR!” is the wrong tack for the Dems to take. It’s hyperbolic and silly and it looks like they’re crying wolf. What they need desperately is a candidate who is appealing.

is Harris that candidate? I have serious doubts.

We only avoided Trump stealing the last election because Pence was unwilling to be complicit.

Trump came within a whisker of overthrowing democracy last time, I don't know why people have a hard time believing he won't try again, or that it's impossible he will succeed.

Might be worth watching some actual speeches/rallies rather than a compendium of clips put together by a platform with a very far right bias?

“This is just an extraordinary testament to the importance of having a president who understands the power of diplomacy and understands the strength that rests in understanding the significance of diplomacy”

This is what she said, I'm not sure how the political leanings of any reporter can change that.

If you think that's a coherent and useful addition to the proceedings Kamala's team would disagree with you, they edited it to a more coherent statement for publication. I think they're going to be quite busy in the next few months.

His lies have actually cost some people their lives and endangered a good many others. Or is the Jan 6 riot a dim and distant memory? Police officers lost their lives that day just doing their jobs because he incited his followers to attack the Capitol Building. His rhetoric is dangerous.

His fanatical MAGA followers actually follow through when he asks them too.

I thought the only death that day was one of the rioters?

FayeGreener · 02/08/2024 21:35

I would like there to be a capable president. Voting for someone because they’re “not Trump” is not good enough!
It’s not good enough in this country either where we’ve ended up with not-Sunak!

You seriously believe Trump would be president at this moment, were it not for the mighty power of Mike Pence?!

If Pence had agreed with Trump, do you seriously believe that the legislative and judicial branches would have just said, “Well, everyone, looks like he’s dictator-for-life now - let’s just let him stay in the White House”?!

At the absolute minimum it would have thrown the country into a constitutional crisis.

And I do not have your faith that the current Supreme Court would have ruled against Trump.
