Now that she's the official nominee, is anyone else excited about Kamala Harris's chances?

Just to get it out of the way - I am completely against Trump being elected President. I'm pretty excited to see Kamala being officially nominated, and looking forward to her fighting a strong campaign - albeit slightly nervously. Anyone else?

She needs to drastically improve her public speaking, at the moment her "word salad" repetitive statements are easy pickings.

Might be worth watching some actual speeches/rallies rather than a compendium of clips put together by a platform with a very far right bias?

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 02/08/2024 20:15

Well I'd say it's certainly made it much more interesting as the democrats are energised, so now the republicans need to work to beat them.

It is a sad state of affairs when you have to worry about what singers or actors are backing the would be president of the US of A

I actually listened to a really smart political activist talk about this yesterday. Her point was that celebrity attention/appearances/endorsements don't motivate people to vote, but that they can get people who haven't been paying attention to politics to pay attention.

No –– she's a genocidal monster, no better than Trump.

How is she a genocidal monster, please explain.

Its a sad state of affairs when a convicted felon and adjudicated sexual abuser is running for President of the United States.

Dark times indeed.

She’s not up to the job. To elect her as POTUS on the sole basis of race/gender would be a sad day for democracy.

Who's voting based solely on that?

Well Putin clearly disagrees with you or the hostages wouldn't have been released yesterday.

Russia knows where this election is going.

Elphame · 02/08/2024 20:26

Better than Trump but I think the US could do better.

I wish we could do better in our politicians here in the UK too

If that is your takeaway from this event, then you have a very simple one dimensional understanding of realpolitik.

SuePreemly · 02/08/2024 20:27

She's certainly more up to the job than the Hannibal Lecter infatuated, battery vs shark rambling, lying orange felon she's up against 🤷‍♀️

If you say so 😂😂

Heatherbell1978 · 02/08/2024 20:29

I always assumed Trump supporters were pretty much limited to the US but it's been eye-opening seeing them on this thread. It doesn't take much common sense to conclude that anyone who is sane and not a convicted criminal would do a better job than Trump.

It's so very very misogynistic to assume that. She is qualified for the job. What qualifications does Trump have? Or because he's male, does it not matter?

DiamondGoldandSilver · 02/08/2024 20:35

@Justcallmebebes

Why do you think she isn’t bright? She was a lawyer and rose to District Attorney of San Francisco and the Attorney General of California before she became a senator and then VP. That takes a lot of intelligence plus resilience.

She's now leading in the national polls. She has raised more than double the amount Trump has in donations in one month. The upswell in support is very impressive.

Supporting her she has:

Beyoncé
George Clooney
Taylor Swift
Oprah
Obamas

Trump has

Hulk Hogan
Kid Rock
Alina Habba
34 felony convictions

I'd say she's stands a very good chance

You do realise Hillary’s wooing of feted pop and film stars like Beyoncé and Jay-Z was part of the reason she lost in 2016.

She's also been endorsed by politicians from both parties

Black Women for Kamala
Black Men for Kamala
White Women for Kamala
White Men for Kamala
More expected to follow...

Regular voters are chipping in too, so all is as it should be.

Why do you assume that just because someone doesn't care for Harris that they are pro Trump? It is more than possible to dislike both candidates.

She lost because she was a Clinton. That name is deeply unpopular and not trusted by a large part of the country.

Also the world has changed significantly since 2016 with the advent of Tik Tok and IG. These celebs have a far greater and wider reach than most politicians could dream of. Its about social media reach to the swing voters and next generations, not hanging out with luvvies.

Trump just doesn't have that reach or popular endorsement that say Taylor Swif tor Beyoncé has.

FayeGreener · 02/08/2024 20:42

If Kamala wants to win she will have to do what Obama did and put in the hours going round talking to rust belt factory workers and convincing them that she had their best interests at heart.

Does anyone else think it's odd that we so easily refer to her as Kamala but refer to men more formally (respectfully?) by their last names? In that very same sentence you called her by her first name and him by his last.

I'm a bit sensitised to this as Trump and his followers are deliberately mispronouncing her name as a show of disrespect.

I think it’s because she’s got an uncommon first name and a very common last name.

If it was the other way round and she was called Susan Aweyo I doubt we’d be referring to her as “Susan”.

Hillary got called Hillary to avoid confusion with Bill.

YankSplaining · 02/08/2024 20:52

Excited? No. I’m not excited about anyone in American politics, and as an American, I know how much she was disliked by most Democrats until Biden declined to run again. If she wins, this is not how I wanted to see the first female president be elected. I wanted the first female president to be someone I could respect.

Kamala Harris, like everyone else in the Biden administration, lied about his obvious cognitive decline and basically told people not to believe their lying eyes. “That footage is deceptively edited.” “It’s because he stutters.” “This video is engineered by Trump supporters and if you share it you’re spreading fake news.” Don’t trust her, don’t like her, not going to pretend she’s going to be a good president because she isn’t Trump. “Less bad” is not the same as good.
