Protesting peacefully is not against the law as such. Climbing up a motorway gantry is against the law as it causes a public nuisance.

A person commits an offence if—
(a)the person—
(i)does an act, or
(ii)omits to do an act that they are required to do by any enactment or rule of law,

(b)the person’s act or omission—
(i)creates a risk of, or causes, serious harm to the public or a section of the public, or
(ii)obstructs the public or a section of the public in the exercise or enjoyment of a right that may be exercised or enjoyed by the public at large, and
(c)the person intends that their act or omission will have a consequence mentioned in paragraph (b) or is reckless as to whether it will have such a consequence.

(2)In subsection (1)(b)(i) “serious harm” means—
(a)death, personal injury or disease,
(b)loss of, or damage to, property, or
(c)serious distress, serious annoyance, serious inconvenience or serious loss of amenity.

I stand the way Just Stop Oil protests, but 4 years is beyond harsh. Rapists serve less time.

Lowerechelons · 26/07/2024 14:21

Can anyone given an example of a peaceful, non disruptive protest that ever achieved anything?

macaroniandcheeze · 26/07/2024 14:22

ThreeFeetTall · 26/07/2024 12:14

But it's her mum? Of course prisoners families are upset about them missing family events- I'm sure that applies to all prisoners? She's not responsible for her adult daughters actions

This and equally Cressida shouldn’t get a longer sentence as some people are saying or get publicly hated more because she has a mum who said something tone-deaf.

I expect Cressida knew the risks when she acted and thinks that their message is more important

LokiDoki75 · 26/07/2024 14:22

Everyone who got a custodial sentence had been in trouble over protesting before, so they had to know they were likely to be going to prison this time. They took the risk, they do the time.

macaroniandcheeze · 26/07/2024 14:23

Mumsnet would have hated Emily Wilding Davison

Seems like natural consequences to me.

IllMetByMoonlight · 26/07/2024 14:26

OK, I'll bite. Who can link to a transcript of what Cressida's mum actually said which caused the Express to choose the phrasing "moans about"? I've had a cursory Google and seen the verb "complained" used in another paper, but both are definitely paraphrasing what was actually said, quite possibly to create the very effect we are seeing on this thread. Both publications do quote her mum's words later in the articles as she describes her daughter, but crucially, as is evident on this thread, they are merely interpreting what was said concerning her mum's disappointment that her daughter would not be present at her brother's wedding.
And while you're at it, also link to the brother's statement re his wedding being a destination wedding, seeing as this is gaining some traction on this thread.

Peaceful protecting should not be illegal

The French wouldnt stand for .it Neither would the Spanish

Outrageous that the uk who prides itself (or did!) On free speach and democracy has made protesting illegal

Protest via peaceful means that don't disrupt, isn't illegal. Causing people to die? That should be illegal! This group are not your average protesters. The ability to (lawfully and peacefully) protest is not under threat. And still isn't after this verdict. 4 years is too short for these murderers.

Comefromaway · 26/07/2024 14:28

I've watched the video She comes across as very entitled.

StartingOver2024 · 26/07/2024 14:30

They should have thought about that before theh stopped the m25 where no doubt people were trying to get to weddings, funerals, school, holidays and work. They made others miss important events, put strain on individuals so I can't shed a tear for her missing her brothers wedding. I don't agree with the use of fossil fuels and I wish eco alternatives were more widely available to us as consumers for a reasonable price but stopping the m25 was not the way to do it. I wonder how many of these protestors drove cars to get to their protests, used mobile phones to record, wore clothing they brought brand new used hair dyes and ate food or used products containing palm oil.

What a bunch of horrible right wingers you are. She is 22 and she is going to prison for 4 years for carrying out a peaceful protest.

Right wingers? Do grow up.

Her and her ilks actions were a direct attack on the poor. They can all rot in prison for all I care. Those living in poverty will be disproportionately impacted by their actions and they fucking know it. It's all well and good for them to crow to us about climate change and the like but I can assure you my impact on this planet is negligible precisely BECAUSE I am poor. I shop in second hand shops, I've never had a foreign holiday, I rarely buy meat because I can't afford it, I rarely have my heating on because I can't afford it, I don't even drive ffs.

If I miss a cancer appointment then guess what, I can't simply then go private, I'd have to wait another 2 months like the cancer patient in this case. If I were to miss work and lose pay it would mean not being able to pay a bill that month. If I missed my DSs autism assessment then I'd likely have to wait another 5 years for one because I can't simply pay for another.

I am sick to the back fucking teeth of being preached to, looked down upon and inconvenienced by those who have zero understanding or empathy for what life is really like for those on the brink of poverty.

AIstolemylunch · 26/07/2024 14:31

After appeal, parole etc she'ss server around a year. Which I think it about right. her brother could easily delay his wedding by a year.

She is also going to clearly make a career out of this so will be fine afterwards as will be employed by/as an activist that won't care about her criminal record.

IllMetByMoonlight · 26/07/2024 13:53

Oh my days, this thread is rife with a kind of weird delighting in making shit up about someone nobody actually knows and extrapolating on details to get in a lather about.

@User8646382 for instance: "See, this is what happens when people don’t have any real worries in life. They get bored and have to invent them."

I'd argue that the climate emergency is about as real a worry as they come!? It is unfolding, in real time, in real places, to real people, as we speak and the real privilege is being able to ‐for now‐ not give a shit and carry on, business as usual, as many posters on the JSO related threads of the last few days. We, through no merit other than the luck of our birth, live in one of the places on the planet where the changes in the climate are yet to be experienced fully. Bully for us. Some, like Cressida, are able to hold hard and uncomfortable truths about how the lifestyle choices of citizens of Western growth economies impact the lives of those in other parts of the world whose carbon impact is negligible, and attempt to effect change.

Ditto lots of chat in the "her posh mates", "privately educated" inverted snobbery vein. What is wrong with people, when we're more irritated by a 22-year old making a life-changing decision and facing the consequences thereof, than the fact that the climate is changing with irrevocable impact on the natural world and all the beings who depend on it, and that fossil fuel giants are continuing to rake it in and dangerously and cynically impact government policy for their own gain, gambling with our children's futures. That's the real class (and race) issue to unpick, not Cressida's Herefordshire upbringing. Who's the bigger crook?

Edited

Are you sure it’s me who’s in a lather?

ClickClack300 · 26/07/2024 14:31

Cry my a river 🙄 YADNBU OP!

As soon as I heard her mother speak I instantly thought privileged middle class upbringing. Serves her right, good enough for her! The ambulances that these idiots block, the funerals and important hospital appointments people miss because of these clowns, so the mothers got a cheek to complain she’ll miss her brothers wedding 😂

That’s what I mean when I say privileged, tone deaf!

Anewuser · 26/07/2024 11:21

It was her brother’s speech that was even worse.

The hypocrisy that she would have flown to be at his wedding.

Please could someone of the 15% give their opinion because I was sure this would be 100% agreeing with OP.

Which brother was it, Tarquin or Rupert? And what did he say?

Onemoreterm · 26/07/2024 14:32

AngeloMysterioso · 26/07/2024 11:16

How many people missed weddings, funerals, chemotherapy appointments, job interviews or whatever else thanks to her tomfuckery??

Absolutely!

cressida et al need to check their privilege

Cressida might be glad of a reason not to go....

ZoeCM · 26/07/2024 14:35

Not saying it makes it any easier for those who did not consent to be inconvenienced as a result of the gantry climbing.

It went far beyond inconvenience. One person actually missed their cancer treatment.

As you asked, I voted YABU because I don't think its of any relevance at all what this family does and think OP has posted it in a cynical effort to raise the profile of "eco-yobs" and have a tribal about "the Left" under the cover of a news story.

Had no idea who she was before this was posted and have very minimal interest in her prison sentence/her brothers wedding, but some of the comments on here are totally OTT.

Nailed it. Excellent post
Those by this disproportionately impacted by this are poorest
Unsalaried workers who if the don’t work don’t get paid, those who have no alternative to missed health appointments
