YABU for turning to the Express for news.
I don't get the impression that Mrs Gethin is 'moaning' about her daughter missing her brother's wedding; she's stating a fact, illustrating that like many others inconvenienced by the actions of JSO's action, Cressida too is now unable to take part in something the family would have been looking forward too.
Not saying it makes it any easier for those who did not consent to be inconvenienced as a result of the gantry climbing. But we do need to square with ourselves that our collective over-consumption of fossil fuels is inconveniencing millions of non-consenting men, women and children in the global South to the point of displacement due to famine, flood and conflict. I work with displaced families seeking asylum in the UK on grounds which can be traced back to the climate emergency and anthropogenic climate change. Their whole lives ravaged. No-one asked them if they'd mind finding themselves at the sharp, hot, flooded, hungry, war-torn end of our lifestyle choices.
There is no chance that Cressida did not anticipate arrest and the likelihood of a custodial sentence as a result of her direct action and civil disobedience. It is a critical part of pre-action briefing to ensure participants of protests of this kind are able to proceed, or not, fully informed of the likely legal impact of their actions. Nobody is allowed to proceed without having been fully briefed. These are acts of civil conscientious objection. This is also why there are trained legal observers present at many protests; arrests are expected and it is important to ensure advocacy and detailed documentation of the course of events. Not to try to avoid arrest, as these are often inevitable and planned for, but to ensure accurate representation. Cressida would have been 100% aware that this was a likely outcome, and she did it anyway. So the gleeful ner-ner-neh-ner-ner at the long custodial sentence is neither here nor there.
