To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

I think that's fine but those who want halal could also have veggie

Not sure what three answer is as some have reasons not to want halal but agree he may be in the minority as my Sikh family all eat halal meat or non halal meat

TheCadoganArms · 18/06/2024 21:35

Just buy one set of the same burgers and on the day split them into two piles of 'Halal' and 'non halal' and just save yourself the hassle.

Simonjt · 18/06/2024 21:38

Remember you’ll need three sets of everything, so three bbqs, three sets of utentils etc as nothing you use will be able to be used on the halal or vegetarian bbq. I must say as a Sikh muself, its unusual to avoid halal food.

eatsleepfarmrepeat · 18/06/2024 21:39

Do you understand what halal entails? Slitting their blood vessels and allowing them
to bleed to death without the stunning. It’s fucking barbaric less humane so YABU to not consider those who put morals above religion.

whatkatysdoingnow · 18/06/2024 21:39

I think I'd do two types only: beef or veggie. The type of beef would depend on the target audience. As you've already identified more people at the event would prefer halal, I'd buy that.

BonifaceBonanza · 18/06/2024 21:41

Yes one meat option one veggie. Those who don’t like the meat option on offer can eat veggie.

Invisimamma · 18/06/2024 21:41

My friends who eat halal would usually just have the vegi option.

No, thats Kosher, the majority of animals killed in Halal slaughter are stunned, there is zero reason not to stun in Halal, where as Kosher forbids any form of stunning.

Plumbibii · 18/06/2024 21:42

@TheCadoganArms would you like it if you are not supposed to have a some type of food and somebody disguised it and made you eat it??? Could potentially cause a lawsuit.

If you are doing beef bugers amd majority of the population is halal, it's helpful to buy them all halal. As you mentioned, hindus don't eat beef and those who may have a problem with it will be minority.

You can't always cater for everyone. There are people who have gluten allergies/intolerances. They get left out too and are in minority. They have to go for alternatives as well.

Riversideandrelax · 18/06/2024 21:43

I'd never eat halal and would be a bit disappointed at it being presumed to be ok for all. I assume you will very clearly indicate it is halal. On the other hand if many people would like halal I can understand you wanting Ng to offer it but might be best to serve vegetarian burgers for all.

Blimpton · 18/06/2024 21:43

Halal is cruel. Lots of people don’t eat it for moral reasons.

Mum2jenny · 18/06/2024 21:43

I am finding halal chicken much tastier than normal cheap supermarket chicken, but I’m not sure why?

Absolutely. It is horrific. I think it is odd you see it as 'suitable for all.'

BlueMum16 · 18/06/2024 21:46

Might be a dumb question but is it not easier to do hot dogs and veggie options? Or chicken and veggie.

Avoid beef altogether

Dont be so ignorant.

I’m assuming youre vegan then?

Plumbibii · 18/06/2024 21:47

@Riversideandrelax Don't judge the OP for other people's religious choices.

MerryChristmasToYou · 18/06/2024 21:47

Just do vegan burgers

@BlueMum16 , I don't think you know what halal means.

Pinkbits · 18/06/2024 21:48

Why should the "non religious" eat Halal?

Plumbibii · 18/06/2024 21:49

Halal chicken sausages are an option too.

Simonjt · 18/06/2024 21:49

Pinkbits · 18/06/2024 21:48

I don’t think they’re being stopped from having the vegetarian option instead, so they don’t have to if they don’t want to.

Around 65% are stunned according to the rspca. Wonder why not 100%?

VisitationRights · 18/06/2024 21:49

I would have non halal and veggie options. I would not buy halal or allow my children to have it.

What if they want a non religious meat?

Avoid beef altogether

Many people don't eat Pork for religious reasons, and other hot dogs are beef. And also Halal would still count.
I think offering beef (Halal or non-Halal depending on majority religion of attendees) plus veggie. On separate BBQs/Grills and utensils etc.
