To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

NameChangedJune · 18/06/2024 21:31

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

I'm recovering from a stomach bug and the only thing I can face are Halal Bird's eye potato Waffles with a little salt.

Hope you feel better soon.

I don't eat BE potato waffles these days as I find them awful, but we all want different things when ill.

I check pretty carefully.
This is actually part of the issue though, halal become the norm without people really being informed that it's happening.

FGS - without people being informed that what’s happening? What do you think is happening?

Nestle confirming on the packaging that their chocolate has no meat or alcohol products in it affects you exactly how?

What do you need to be informed about?

What are you scared is happening?

Alwaysthesun24 · 19/06/2024 21:32

@wordler
As already stated, choice is being eroded. I'm not sure how many times you're going to ignore that point.

Do you check if something has been certified as kosher too?

Well - you keep saying that but it isn’t actually true. How is choice being eroded?

Isn't it strange.... Normally loathe the things, as so artificial but toasted sprinkled with salt, just the thing. Also craved ginger root tea .

I did buy Jersey Royal potatoes as well...but the small packet of Waffles won!

Comedycook · 19/06/2024 21:38

You know this isn't some great conspiracy. Food manufacturers care about profit. They have probably worked out that missing out on sales because their products aren't halal will be a greater financial hit than missing out on sales because people don't want to eat halal. Like a lot of things...it comes down to money.

When it comes to kosher and halal meat, call me a cynic but I struggle to believe that so many people are genuinely concerned about animal welfare....more like they're concerned about animal welfare when it relates to jewish and muslim people.

And @Scirocco i can’t speak for meat eaters but I am purely concerned for the animals welfare and suffering than the type of person eating them after slaughter.
Some countries have banned all no stun slaughter, others have restrictions. This is down to concerns of animal suffering.

Do you understand what halal entails? Slitting their blood vessels and allowing them
to bleed to death without the stunning. It’s fucking barbaric less humane so YABU to not consider those who put morals above religion.

Do you find secular slaughterhouse practices humane? It’s all vile, so be vegetarian or accept it’s grim. (I’m secular and not a vegetarian, and I’m familiar with both Halal/Kosher and secular slaughterhouse methods. There is no moral high ground in the meat industry. Grim, but meat is healthy for my needs.)

I'm glad you are - animal welfare is important and it's only through people being proactive about exercising consumer pressure that things will change. Thanks for sharing that map.

I spent some time living in an area where farming was a major industry, and saw some good practice, but also some horrendous mistreatment of animals. I was vegan for years as a result and even now only eat meat occasionally, where I know there were good standards of animal welfare during its life and that suffering was minimal during its death.

I’m sure the mass produced non Halal burgers at a school fair bbq are produced from animals who suffered terribly. The fact that it’s a minuscule amount less terrible than Halal or Kosher is all posturing. If you care about animal welfare, don’t eat any burger at a school fair.

I haven’t eaten any animals since 1980.
I do appreciate that people want to, I find it extremely hard to accept that it is acceptable for some animals to be killed whilst fully conscious.

Completely agree. I eat meat and am not bothered about whether it is halal or not. I accept that it may be grim but I am a meat eater and will remain so.

You very strongly implied it was - that there was some kind stealth halal plan to take over the food industry.

You don’t seem to be able to explain what the issue is with food labeling or why halal food being available impacts you negatively in any way at all.

So the poster asking you about Kosher labeling is trying to verify whether it’s just one religion you have issues with or both of them.

Anyone with racist opinions can pay an extra £5 for their nandos imported from a non-muslim country.🤣 Since people are so concerned about eating "halal" food.

Pinkbits · 19/06/2024 22:21

Damn I really like Nutella as well.

Plumbibii · 19/06/2024 22:23

Seems like if people on this thread had their way, there would be no halal meat anywhere for muslims in this country.

So where is the woke and inclusivity culture??

Pinktruffle · 19/06/2024 22:34

Simonjt · 18/06/2024 21:38

Remember you’ll need three sets of everything, so three bbqs, three sets of utentils etc as nothing you use will be able to be used on the halal or vegetarian bbq. I must say as a Sikh muself, its unusual to avoid halal food.

Sikh rehat maryada as set out by Guru Gobind Singh Ji says that a Sikh should never eat ritually sacrificed meat - halal, kosher etc. Kuttha meat is forbidden but Jhatka meat is not.

This. A vegan burger will be genuinely suitable for all, and the optional toppings can be what determines whether the end result is halal/non-halal/vegetarian/vegan according to individual choice.
That way no-one is: offended / left out / repulsed - everyone happy - win win - lots of funds raised.

Sorry, I don't eat a lot of meat, but if I am going to have food at a barbeque then a vegan burger is the last thing I would want. I very much doubt I would be alone in that, so no, everybody is not going to be happy - and I doubt there will be lots of funds raised.

MoMo999 · 19/06/2024 23:02

No this is emboldened Farage culture masquerading as "not racist" - doesn't fool anyone - was trying to reply to Plumbibii

wordler · 19/06/2024 21:19

Those are just a few quick examples - you are undoubtedly eating halal certified food products if you live in the UK.

It seems @Alwaysthesun24 has a very limited diet, and spends most of their time checking the ingredients of everything they buy. What a way to live!
