To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

NameChangedJune · 18/06/2024 21:31

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

“Vegetarian and halal can be cooked together.”

Not if you want vegetarians to buy the veggie burgers. Cooking meat separately from veggie is a basic requirement (and I’m not veggie).

Leidenschaft24 · 18/06/2024 22:20

Oh be quiet.

Why won’t you explain why non-halal burgers should be served at an event where the majority of meat eaters are Muslim?

Because you have NO answer.

Plumbibii · 18/06/2024 22:23

Cherrysoup · 18/06/2024 22:21

You’re kidding, right? No way would I touch a vegetarian burger knowing it had been cooked with a (halal) meat burger! That’s not right at all.

I am sorry. My answer was purely in perspective of halal and non halal. My mind competely skipped vegetarians.

Plumbibii · 18/06/2024 22:19

Vegetarian and halal can be cooked together.

Non halal meat utensils and cooking arrangements will need to be separate to ensure no cross contamination.

What?!?

Vegetarian food cannot be cooked alongside meat!

WittyFatball · 18/06/2024 22:23

Just buy some halal burgers from Tesco and don't even worry about it.

Anyone who doesn't want halal can eat the veggie burgers.

Like it or not, it's very common practice. Lots of schools have all meat halal, as do numerous restaurant chains and other restaurants.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 18/06/2024 22:23

@countcalculia
No, but I can read unlike you

'A large portion are non religious OR Muslim'

Note:
a) the portion is split into non religious/muslim
b) a large portion doesn't equal majority

Glad to have been able to clear that up for you

I’m confused OP. If your DP is a Sikh and religious he wouldn't be eating any meat so not sure what he’s worried about?

Are you avoiding France too then??

Human rights in France are nowhere comparable to the likes of Qatar or Saudi. But why the obsession again with my travel choices? Very weird,

kinkytoes · 18/06/2024 21:51

Just go 100% veggie for everyone then you won't offend anyone.

Are you in the UK?

If I turned up and halal was the only meat option I'd feel pretty pissed off tbh.

I’m assuming that you’re vegan then?

Halal just means permissible. An apple is halal. An onion is halal.

It’s ok to cook halal foods as vegetarian food, as long as they’re vegetarian friendly.

Wrong.

[Edit: sorry, just seen you've acknowledged this.]

Peonii · 18/06/2024 22:24

@NameChangedJune could you do lamb burgers instead of beef and that way Hindu people could eat it too.

With respect to halal being cruel, I have read what constitutes halal - I think people only think the way animals are slaughtered is the halal part. Halal also means the animals must be reared i in good conditions with respect and kindly. The slaughtering part is so that the animals die as quickly as possible as well as blood draining from the body.

Also, it isn't ok to cook veggie and halal meat together given the halal meat is meat and vegetarians would most probably not like that! It would only be ok for the halal consumer if it was cooked on the veggie grill.

HulaChick · 18/06/2024 22:25

I wouldn't buy Halal meat if you paid me.

NameChangedJune · 18/06/2024 22:25

No point to prove. It would just be easier if I could do a single type of beef burger for all, that most would be okay with.

I’m sure I’m missing something, because I can’t for the life of me understand why OP would sell the opposite of what the majority would most likely buy.

Isn’t the fete a fundraising event?

Do Muslims not care about animal welfare? I'm curious?

Many Muslims care about animal welfare. Just like many others from other faith groups.

There are different views on the relative humane-ness of the different ways people kill animals for food. The meat industry as a whole isn't exactly animal-friendly.

In addition to the ways in which animals are killed and meat prepared, Islamic guidance also covers the importance of animal welfare standards while animals are alive. Sadly, many animals across the meat industry are treated appallingly, both during their lives and in their deaths (eg the gassing of chickens).

If I'm buying meat, I make sure it's from a source where I'm confident in animal welfare standards during life, as well as one where I'm satisfied that the animal's death has been in accordance with my own views on less inhumane ways of killing it. I have family members who have different views on what those standards and methods of killing should look like. Islam teaches that we should respect other people, so I wouldn't serve those family members halal meat or expect them to serve me it; we'd have a veggie option instead.

Even if people disagree on the ways to kill animals, we can still all make a difference to improve animal welfare while they're alive, by checking the meat we buy and eat is from farms which meet animal welfare standards. If people are eating meat from animals killed in accordance with religious practices, we can ask about things like stunning as well. And we can all reduce the numbers of animals killed for food by adjusting our diets - it's also good for our health and for the environment to reduce our meat consumption.

Putting · 18/06/2024 22:25

I can’t see a lot of difference between halal and non-halal meat in terms of humane killing tbh, and halal meat has the advantage it’s less likely to have added antibiotics.

I hope people avoiding halal meat on welfare grounds also avoid buying most chicken.

SonicTheHodgeheg · 18/06/2024 22:25

My understanding is a lot of supermarket and restaurant /takeaway meat is halal because they can sell to more customers and there is ho requirement to label meat as not halal.
I think I read on here that the meat being killed while a CD of religious words being spoken makes it suitable to be labelled as halal for commercial purposes.

I think that people are more likely to ask if meat is halal than if meat is not halal so non-halal meat plus veggie is the ethical way to go so that people who are anti halal meat don’t eat it at the event.

That’s not what the poster meant and you know it. They were referring to burgers. The poster has corrected her/himself.

So you wouldn’t buy meat from animals that is stunned prior to slaughter, do you exclusively buy Kosher meat? I

Waferbiscuit · 18/06/2024 22:27

Go veggie and do the right thing for everyone.

Honestly arguing about which is the least cruel way of killing a sentient being is pointless. Should we reduce the punishment for murder if the killer does it kindly? Wake up!

DexaVooveQhodu · 18/06/2024 22:27

If you have the capacity to offer a choice of 3 it would be better to have beefburgers, chicken burgers and veggie burgers and pick one of the two meats to be halal and the other not halal rather than having 2 varieties of beef which is annoying for those who don't eat beef.

But if having 3 options is too much faff it's fine to just have meat & veggie
