To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

Why shouldn't they.

My muslim friends and colleagues always ask or check whether Halal food is available when whe choose a restaurant and when we order. I have never witnesssd a non muslim acquaintance ever ask or seem to care one way or the other.

I'm going to call it as i see it and say I think a lot of the people that have a problem do so because its Muslim, not because its Halal, because ive never seen a non vegan give a shit about how meat is slaughtered in any other context.

Because it assumed that we don’t engage with these barbaric practices when we are serving food to the public.

I don’t want to eat halal beef and I do always check but many who don’t would be pretty disgusted to find they’d been given it without their knowledge.

Do non-halal, and vegi. I’m not religious but I wouldn’t eat halal, it’s bizarre you think people would happily eat halal because they aren’t religious.

Yes, serve non-halal at an event where the majority of meat eaters are Muslim. That makes total sense Hmm

Simonjt · 18/06/2024 22:06

Latenighttelly · 18/06/2024 22:03

Do Muslims not care about animal welfare? I'm curious?

Generally yes, which is why any meat for the halal market should be raised to a higher welfare standard, its also why the majority of animals in halal slaughter are stunned. Stunning is forbidden in Kosher, but I’m not sure if there are any conditions on animal husbandry.

Plumbibii · 18/06/2024 22:06

@Latenighttelly Do people who eat sea food by hunting not care about aea lige welfare??

You know how animals live in wild?? Does nature mot care about animal welfare??

I'd never eat halal and would be a bit disappointed at it being presumed to be ok for all. I assume you will very clearly indicate it is halal. On the other hand if many people would like halal I can understand you wanting Ng to offer it but might be best to serve vegetarian burgers for all.

I read that all Nando’s was halal and I was similarly surprised that it was presumed to be okay for all.

This! I mean unless we are all buying higher welfare meat and have checked abbatoir processes I'm not sure any method of slaughter has an edge over the others. There's just a fair amount of ignorance I suspect.
@Scirocco has given some excellent and helpful feedback and it may be worth checking in with another Muslim PTA rep to validate that? Ultimately you want to serve what will sell the most!

Everything vegan is the safest bet. Less hassle too.

Could you not ask what they did in previous years and if it worked well?

Reugny · 18/06/2024 22:09

@Simonjt don't worry loads of people particularly in cities and large towns don't know what type of beef, chicken and lamb they are eating when they go to restaurants or have a takeaway.

SergeantDawkins · 18/06/2024 22:09

🙄🙄 people who eat meat but make a fuss over halal meat.
All slaughter is cruel and inhumane.
Your way of killing something that wants to live is no better than anyone else’s, you just look bigoted.

noctilucentcloud · 18/06/2024 22:09

TheCadoganArms · 18/06/2024 21:35

Just buy one set of the same burgers and on the day split them into two piles of 'Halal' and 'non halal' and just save yourself the hassle.

That would be completely unethical

PalePurplePumpkin · 18/06/2024 22:09

It depends on your reasoning behind not wanting to cater for those who would prefer non halal meat?

I'm getting the impression from your OP that you're just trying to prove some sort of point.

Leidenschaft24 · 18/06/2024 22:09

I'd be serving non-halal meat and a veggie option. No need for the meat to be halal.

DumbassHamsterSitterPerson · 18/06/2024 22:09

We stopped doing a BBQ at our school summer fayre for exactly this reason.
It's a CofE school, but due to location has a lot of children of other/no faith. Muslims can only have halal meat. Some people won't eat halal. Some religions can't have pork. If you go veggie do you do meat substitute, which a lot of people can't eat/don't like because they are like meat. Or bean burgers/ the ones made of veg. Again, a lot of people don't like them.
We gave up as no matter what we did people complained.
You can't cater for everyone, but people seem to expect you to.

ChildrenOfTheQuorn · 18/06/2024 22:10

I think YABU offering halal as the meat option.

But where's the controversy in that? 😉

mamaandbump · 18/06/2024 22:12

These comments are disgusting. Please either leave vegetarian as an option or do put halal options out. Im a white english woman but not the bloody EDL like most of these comments.

WittyFatball · 18/06/2024 22:13

Funny how people suddenly care about animal welfare when it comes to halal meat.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 18/06/2024 22:13

FairyRings · 18/06/2024 21:51

Surely NON Halal should be the default? Anyone not wanting that can have the veggie option.

Absolutely this.
You are assuming that most non Muslims are ok with eating halal meat. I don't think this should be the case. Unless the overwhelming majority attending are Muslim then it should be:
Veggie option
Non halal beef option

I prefer not to eat Halal meat if there is an option (and get annoyed that lots of chain restaurants now only use Halal meat, usually without making it clear as well), but if the option is Halal burger or veggie burger, I would chose halal!
