To not offer two types of beef burger at summer fair (halal and non halal)?

In addition a veggie option?

I’ve took responsibility for sorting the burgers for BBQ at summer school PTA fair.
I was thinking, I can buy all burgers as halal only. A good portion of the school population are either non-religious or Muslim.

However, DH is saying we should also offer a non-halal burger option (he is religious - Sikh and avoids halal due to his beliefs). However I think he is a minority and could have veggie? There are Hindus but they wouldn’t eat beef anyway so it’s a tiny amount of people other than DH who I think would care if we go full halal for the burgers.

IMO one type of beef burger that is suitable for most would be easiest. AIBU?

Just go 100% veggie for everyone then you won't offend anyone.

Are you in the UK?

If I turned up and halal was the only meat option I'd feel pretty pissed off tbh.

Plumbibii · 18/06/2024 21:51

@VisitationRights what do you do if you ever go to a muslim country for holiday then?

FairyRings · 18/06/2024 21:51

Surely NON Halal should be the default? Anyone not wanting that can have the veggie option.

Simonjt · 18/06/2024 21:51

Pinkbits · 18/06/2024 21:50

What if they want a non religious meat?

They can take sandwiches with them, or buy meat from elsewhere, although I’m fairly sure the burgers aren’t religious.

Absolutely. It is horrific. I think it is odd you see it as 'suitable for all.'

I said ‘suitable for most’ (of those who would eat beef) not ‘all’

Do non-halal, and vegi. I’m not religious but I wouldn’t eat halal, it’s bizarre you think people would happily eat halal because they aren’t religious.

bellamountain · 18/06/2024 21:53

Could you not just hire in a burger van? Be a lot less hassle and presumably other stalls will be there to make money.

I've run fetes and tournaments before and BBQs are hard work.

Farmwifefarmlife · 18/06/2024 21:53

i would definitely have a non halal option. I won’t eat halal meat nor am I a vegetarian. I think halal meat is awful.

I think we’d sell more if we get halal as there are lots of Muslims. And beef burgers much easier to BBQ.

I don’t and would not ever go to Muslim country for any reason.

I would agree with this.

Plumbibii · 18/06/2024 21:54

@FairyRings why should Non Halal be default in a muslim majority school? That does not show inclusivity and PTA probably won't be able to raise much funds potentially due to lack of sales.

Why not?

Wheelbarrowbabe · 18/06/2024 21:54

I think most people who aren't Muslim would prefer not to eat halal, because it is (rightly or wrongly) associated with animal cruelty. Unless you are catering for a majority Muslim event you are making the wrong call and non-halal should be the default imo.

Halal is also more expensive which is significant if this is a fundraising event.

No thanks, best just stick with some nice UK British Beef Burgers. Ive just looked up McDonalds and even they dont sell Halal burgers.

eatsleepfarmrepeat · 18/06/2024 21:39

Do you understand what halal entails? Slitting their blood vessels and allowing them
to bleed to death without the stunning. It’s fucking barbaric less humane so YABU to not consider those who put morals above religion.

Surely such morals would have you avoiding meat altogether

PTSDBarbiegirl · 18/06/2024 21:54

Just go veggie burgers with different toppings that can be added at burger bar. Cheese, coleslaw, tzatziki, salsa etc.

VisitationRights · 18/06/2024 21:55

Soontobe60 · 18/06/2024 21:54

Why not?

Why would I?

BogRollBOGOF · 18/06/2024 21:56

With a veggie option you're covered either way so I'd base halal/ non-halal on the dominant market.

I wouldn't eat the veggie option because the chance of it having laxitive levels of soya beans in it is too high to risk (unless the labeling is very clear). I have no preference over halal/ non-halal as the abbatoir process has little practical difference on a mass production scale.

Yes, nice british halal beef burgers, or do you think they’re not a thing? I don’t think OP is using mcdonalds, so not going to help their query.

Although I do think bbqs are generally a faff with large groups as its labour intensive as you have to cook and immediately serve each portion.

MasterOfCake · 18/06/2024 21:57

Majority of kebab shops / Turkish restaurants are halal. You’re missing out on good food if you have a blanket ban on halal meat!

XiCi · 18/06/2024 21:58

I would never eat Halal and veggie burgers taste disgusting so I'd wouldn't be buying anything if they were the only options. Your DH is right.

Keep up your provocation, you're well outnumbered here.
