There are multiple threads made by young women who got into relationship and/or pregnant with much older (in most cases much more well off) man.
In every case MN advice or complain is "why did you not get married to protect yourself"?

No one has to follow the rule if they don't want to but it tends to line up with what I would find creepy myself. I also, personally, wouldn't go older than a parent or younger than a child.
