To ask what on earth do people who post about Palestine expect to happen?

It seems that every time I log into social media there are so people constantly posting about how we need to free Palestine and condemning everyone who ignores their posts.

May I ask what do they expect posting about it will actually accomplish? Did I miss something and wars can be stopped with SM posts? If so, why are they not posting the same about Ukraine? There is still a war going on there...

I've seen lots of posts raising money and getting dozens of families out of there, so I guess they have achieved saving hundreds of lives.

Classic whataboutery.

I guess, if you can call "why are they not doing this pointless thing for something else" whataboutery 😂

Post about Israel / Palestine if that’s your thing of course, but demanding that everyone else does likewise is tedious, pointless and irritating.

Writing rude comments on Instagram/ Twitter is hardly going to make a difference to Israeli / UK / US policy is it?

Many, many people are displaying performative activism. “Look how much I care!” That said many people are posting and doing something constructive e.g. lobbying those in power and/or helping the victims.

That's amazing, but I am talking specifically about generic #freePalestine posts that raise no money and attack people who don't post the same!

Are you actually interested in an answer about why people are doing it? Or are you just looking for a place to moan about SM posts that do not interest you?

If its the former, I suggest you go back to the social media you are seeing these posts on and politely ask the people doing the posting. You will most likely learn a lot more straight from the source than you will asking random people in mumsnet.

If it's the latter, then bore off.

Have you considered that when people are outraged/shocked/disturbed by the mass murder of children they want to express it? Most of our online posts don't 'achieve anything' - whatever you think that means - but the point of communication is to ... uh express ourselves

MoonLightWhisper · 15/05/2024 23:11

People are expressing their outrage that Israel has killed over 30,000 civilians in the space of 6 months, will their posts change anything "no"... But it is putting pressure on western leaders who blindly support Israel by funding them and providing them with weapons.

For example the USA has temporarily suspended giving them weapons due to evidence showing israel committing war crimes ..

It may be a very small win but we shouldn't just ignore what are leaders are support the death of thousands of civilians.

Ps: people are free to post support for Ukraine on social media any time they like! Noone is stopping them.

OolongTeaDrinker · 15/05/2024 23:12

I’ve noticed a couple of friends, having not really ever posted anything political on social media have become absolutely fixated on the Palestine situation, posting multiple times per day. They don’t have any personal ties to Palestine so I have no idea why they have currently devoted their time to this and have never mentioned any other atrocities. I do wonder what all the 🍉 emojis and posts of ‘solidarity 👊’ are actually supposed to achieve OP so I do get what you are saying!

The news isn’t reporting what they should so sm will give you a good look at what’s really going on.
Once you’ve watched months of stomach turning war crimes happen in real time it should impact the way you function as a human being. It should make you do whatever you can. No matter how small. Write to your MP, attend rallies, boycott etc.

That’s decent people though. Others will just sneer and shrug their shoulders.

walkthroughtulips · 15/05/2024 23:16

It’s quite performative. But it’s also keeping it relevant I guess.

Opine · 15/05/2024 23:21

@OolongTeaDrinker Do you need ties to Palestine to not be outraged and repulsed by the sight of toddlers missing half their heads? Mothers screaming over the bodies of their dead children. ALL of them gone in one day?
is there a particular radius for which your sympathy reaches? 30 miles? 100?

And ask why people are even bothering to post about mass slaughter on socialmedia, like the op is asking....

Funnily enough mass slaughter still angers and infuriates those of us who care op.

My question is not why do people post about it, but what they expect to achieve by posting "let's free Palestine" as if we have the power to do that by posting on social media. You are being deliberately obtuse

But no one follows up with what will happen when the shooting stops .
What do people suggest Israelis do - as Hamas are determined to have no Israel- what should happen next. What do you think must happen next to solve this .
i don’t see any solution.

QueenOfHiraeth · 15/05/2024 23:26

The problem, for me, is that we need this terrible situation in Gaza to end but should not endorse any action that allows Hamas to continue to do terrible things which they have already promised they will.

Most of the people posting Free Palestine and similar have not thought of the history and politics of the area or of the fact their demands would destroy the only democracy in the Middle East and hand power to extremists who will brutalise and kill their own people as well as their enemies.
