To wonder how people eat all the cakes in these blhh

So I love to watch baking videos and whatnot. They're always making like 2 dozen massive muffins or 20 cookies or whatever.

When do these all get eaten?? Am I missing something? If I make 12 muffins, we (family of 3) will take maybe a week to eat them, maybe more. They often get frozen and used up eventually. But I always get the impression that we're "slow".

How long would 12 cookies, the size you might get in bakery supermarket last your family?

I never bake or buy cakes, I'd love to do both those things but I'd be massive if I did.
I treat myself to other things instead, ones that are not fattening like garden plants.

SkyBloo · 28/04/2024 10:34

We are a family of four and would each have one every day so 3 days. DH on occasion might polish off 2 in a day if he's been running.

But then also, we often have friends or family popping in and i would offer that sort of thing to a visitor so actually they will often disappear faster!

chaticat · 28/04/2024 10:35

Is this like the mumsnet chicken where we all brag how long it takes us to eat cookies?

SkyBloo · 28/04/2024 10:35

Nb i do also make smaller things rather than huge sizes. I'll make a 1lb loaf, and cookies half the size of supermarket ones.

Gettingbysomehow · 28/04/2024 10:35

If I made a batch of muffins I'd have eaten them all by the end of the day because I'm disgustingly greedy. I'm going to the garden centre today to buy plants and I'm going to buy one small slice of cake there. I probably won't eat anything like that again for months.

hourstokill · 28/04/2024 10:36

i bake on a regulare basis, cake and buns mainly... just for family to take to work, school etc.

i never eat any because im not a great fan of sponge cake 😂

BertieBotts · 28/04/2024 10:37

Confused Is this a weird stealth brag?

It would probably take us (family of 5, but thinking back to when we were 3) about 2-3 days to eat 12 muffins.

20 cookies - again a couple of days.

We wouldn't need to freeze them. We would probably have a couple each (maybe 3?) on the day they were made and then whoever wanted some would have 1-2 more over the next day or two.

I have no idea what a "massive" muffin is though Grin

AtomicBlondeRose · 28/04/2024 10:38

I usually do half the mix. I use a small
loaf tin that fits in my air fryer - that does enough cake for three of use for three days (we have it as pudding with custard or ice cream). A batch of cookies or brownies lasts three days as a rule of thumb. Note: no teenagers here, two adults who try to eat treats moderately and one skinny 10yo who would demolish the lot but has the same as we do.

Waitingfordoggo · 28/04/2024 10:38

Homemade cakes and cookies don’t last long in my house. I’ve got two teenagers, one of whom eats an extraordinary amount (but is very lean). OH and I both have a sweet tooth and are both at home a lot. We also have ILs popping in several times a week as well as the DCs’ friends. A cake can disappear in a day or two!

Greybay · 28/04/2024 10:38

They'd be gone in a day or two here.
Teenage boys eat loads!!

TinyYellow · 28/04/2024 10:38

This is why people bring their baking into work. Those people are great.

Beamur · 28/04/2024 10:38

I rarely bake for this reason. DH doesn't really like cake or biscuits and DD will only eat certain ones and I don't want to eat a dozen buns! (Well, I do, but I try not to) I usually only bake for a party or something like that.

GalileoHumpkins · 28/04/2024 10:39

Just the smell of the muffins baking would fill me up for the rest of the year, I can't believe you put them in your mouth!

OneTC · 28/04/2024 10:41

Some people eat more cakes

samestyle · 28/04/2024 10:41

About a day or 2, any treats get snapped up our house.

Roomination · 28/04/2024 10:41

If my DM had made that amount, unless she really rationed us, the whole lot would be gone in a flash. As kids and teens we were like a plague of locusts around biscuits, cake and stuff. I remember DM baking a batch of jam tarts, left them to cool and between the 3 of us, with a bit of help from the dog, polished the lot off. We were in big trouble.

SidekickSylvia · 28/04/2024 10:42

We could easily eat 12 supermarket bakery cookies in one day. We're a family of 6, including 4 teenagers. I'd be surprised if there were any left by lunch time tbh. I've stopped baking so often, because it takes longer to bake and clear up than it takes my sons to eat the results.

Treelichen · 28/04/2024 10:43

Wouldn’t last a day in my house

MolkosTeenageAngst · 28/04/2024 10:43

The people on the popular baking TikTok’s are likely making them for the likes and to get views and not necessarilly baking to actually be eaten. I imagine lots get thrown away.

It sounds like you’re not big cake eaters if 12 muffins lasts your family of 3 a week, that means not even one a day each. I could easily eat 2 sweet treats a day if they were available at home (I tend not to buy or bake sweet things for that reason!). But 3 is also a small family, lots of people likely have larger families and many people may also live near to extended family or have friends popping over. If you’re a family of six and then invite over two sets of grandparents and a few aunts/ uncles and cousins every weekend then you’ll easily get through two dozen muffins over the weekend. Some people might also take their bakes to work or to school to share as well.

OneThreadOnly · 28/04/2024 10:46

I could eat two muffins in a day easily or 4 cookies.

I don’t bake for this reason, I would be the size of a house.

MrsBungle · 28/04/2024 10:46

12 muffins might last 2 days in my house. Two teenagers.

I mediate and imagine smelling the muffins cooking. I'm shocked and appalled anyone needs to inhale real baking muffins.

TimeInBlue · 28/04/2024 10:52

I can’t believe anyone would even make muffins let alone eat them…I mean do you know how much sugar is in one of them?..No wonder we have a health crisis in this country…We’ve forgotten what a healthy weight looks like..

Thought I’d get the bingo cards out the way first before answering. A day or maybe 2, I have 2 (sometimes 3 when ds is back from uni) teenage boys in the house (they’re not even tall strapping sports players). We’re just greedy bastards.
