So I love to watch baking videos and whatnot. They're always making like 2 dozen massive muffins or 20 cookies or whatever.

When do these all get eaten?? Am I missing something? If I make 12 muffins, we (family of 3) will take maybe a week to eat them, maybe more. They often get frozen and used up eventually. But I always get the impression that we're "slow".

How long would 12 cookies, the size you might get in bakery supermarket last your family?

I buy biscuits to last a couple of weeks. The greedy rest of my family eat them in the first couple of days. Quite often they’ve eaten them all and there is nothing left for me four days later! So I hide some, just for me, in my office!

Sunnytwobridges · 28/04/2024 22:47

It’s just me and my adult DD and we can demolish an average size three layer cake in two to three days. We are cake lovers and will eat it for breakfast, lunch dinner and dessert 😂. But this is why I don’t make them very often as we would be big as houses if we did.

AFewScrewsLucy · 29/04/2024 11:37

I can't reconcile MN users in my head. On one hand all MN kids are not fussed by sweet treats, or only have a few treats a week, but aren't who mad for them. They'll proclaim their kids have a perfectly healthy relationship with food... But also, the same kids will demolish their way through 2-3 large cookies in a day, or if muffins appear in the house, they're on them like locusts.

which is it???? 😂

KreedKafer · 29/04/2024 11:50

There's only me and DP in my house, but when I was a kid my mum baked all the time and the five of us would easily have troughed through a dozen cookies in 24 hours!

I think maybe if you're watching a baking video where someone's making 24 large muffins, they're mainly making that amount because it looks more impressive on film. It's very easy to scale baking up or down just by dividing quantities, so they go for a big batch that looks lavish on camera and assume people will adjust the ingredients for their own needs.

Also a lot of people bake things for guests, parties, school bake sales, to give as gifts etc.

DoughBallss · 29/04/2024 17:54

3 days but me and OH can be quite greedy with sweet stuff.

I love baking but don’t do it very often for this reason, only if it’s an occasion or I know I can give some away

lucindasspunkyfunkyvoice · 29/04/2024 18:50

It would take me a day or two

this is why i stopped baking because i cant stop eating

How big are those packs of biscuits that they are meant to last weeks when opened?

There are 5 of us, probably last a day, 2 at most if they were yummy 😋

lemming40 · 29/04/2024 18:54

12 cookies? We're a family of 4 so probably 2 or 3 days.

Packetofcrispsplease · 29/04/2024 19:14

I’d easily eat a slice of cake 🍰 each day with a cup of tea if myself or DD had been baking , husband would have some too .
We will usually make an 8” sandwich cake so that’d last 3 days maybe 🤔
I sometimes get bored of eating the same cake though , variety is nice so I don’t bake that often .

How much butter do you go through?

I love home made cake but balk at the butterfat prices.

ColdWaterDipper · 29/04/2024 19:17

Wow! A week to eat 12 muffins between 3 people. That’s a lot slower than us. We are 4 people but I tend to only have one or two cakes / biscuits out of a batch of 24 usually. My children and husband all do a lot of sports training and so if I made 12 large cookies, realistically they would last that day and the next and then be all gone. I don’t think we are particularly greedy either, but the kids might have one cookie each on coming in from
school, and another on the way home from training, then take one each in their lunchboxes the next day. DH and I might have one each after supper and then DH would eat two over the course of the following day, and so on.

I make cakes or biscuits a couple of times a week so some days we have fruit for pudding and others it’s homemade cake etc.

I sometimes use Stork for baking as recommended by HRH 👑 Mary Berry 🍰🧁🥧.
usually half a tub for the 8 inch sandwich cake .
I put jam and sometimes illegally put cream 😉

IpsyUpsyDaisyDoos · 29/04/2024 19:53

I tend to bake on a Friday with DD (she's little and I work PT so we're home then). This means we have a Friday treat and then there's maybe Friday pudding for after dinner. She goes to the grandparents on a Saturday if we've no plans for a day out, and the other cousins are often there, with sometimes her aunt's and uncles too. So I send any leftovers that way, keeping a few for us.

Or if we bake earlier in the week or on Sunday, they go in lunch boxes with some extras for work friends.

That being said, if I let myself, I could easily eat the majority of a batch of fairy cakes or cookies while they were still warm and fresh. I only don't because I'd get even fatter!

Greymustard · 29/04/2024 19:57

I don't bake as often as i would like... but a batch of 12 large cookies would get snaffled up before they had cooled in my house.... same with home made bread.

If this is one of those threads where you have to prove the resilience of a stone in the face of scrumptious indulgence... my little family of four would fail every time.

We have never had to freeze muffins or cakes....

One day you smug f*cker! (Jokes)

Rubyupbeat · 29/04/2024 20:15

I am thoroughly greedy and could easily polish off 3 big muffins or 5 large cookies in one day, then go back for the same the next day.
This is why I dont bake anymore.

I had my kids too long ago for them to have been MN kids, but they were definitely the plague of locusts variety and sometimes needed a bit of parental input around sharing and portion control.

Toptops · 29/04/2024 21:04

That would last our family of 2, 2-3 days to polish off. We have DS dropping in and DH would eat the lot immediately left to his own devices

WorriedMama12 · 29/04/2024 22:27

I could eat 2 large cookies a day, at least. I've went through those 4 in a bag cookie's from the supermarket in a day before. And no, I'm not huge!

toxic44 · 29/04/2024 22:39

I usually bake treats twice a week. A batch is maybe 20 biscuits and I like to make the fresh ones before the biscuit tin is empty. Two adults and occasional visitors.

Gettingbysomehow · 28/04/2024 10:35

If I made a batch of muffins I'd have eaten them all by the end of the day because I'm disgustingly greedy. I'm going to the garden centre today to buy plants and I'm going to buy one small slice of cake there. I probably won't eat anything like that again for months.

That is me too😄

I love to bake, so I do it for events, charity stalls only.

iammorethanjustamum · 30/04/2024 07:43

We're a family of 5, 2 preteen girls and a toddler boy. The other day the toddler and i made 13 cookies with left over Easter chocolate. There were none left 24hours later. I suspect if allowed my girls could eat at least 6 in one sitting.

Unless kids are grossly overwight/diabetic/similar issued i wouldn't do any food "policing" and comparisons. Eat what you want when you want (obviously considering others)

If a whole batch is too much only make half.

2 days.

Seems reasonable!

You smell the muffins? I can only look at photos of them, otherwise I don't have room for my massive salad.

I really think a trigger warning in the title would have been appropriate. We do not even discuss m***s in this household.
