So I love to watch baking videos and whatnot. They're always making like 2 dozen massive muffins or 20 cookies or whatever.

When do these all get eaten?? Am I missing something? If I make 12 muffins, we (family of 3) will take maybe a week to eat them, maybe more. They often get frozen and used up eventually. But I always get the impression that we're "slow".

How long would 12 cookies, the size you might get in bakery supermarket last your family?

Well it's Mumsnet, so approximately 152 days.

In the real world however, 1-2 days. I have teenagers.

I do only tend to bake when I haven't done a big shop, so they'll have them instead of crisps or whatever. But even so, they certainly wouldn't ever need freezing!!

Sahara123 · 28/04/2024 13:21

Oh I love homemade cakes and biscuits…. Don’t even have any teenagers to blame any more . I daren't bake that often any more , I’d be housesized . Although I have just polished off a big slice of a pear and frangipane cake I made for pudding last night to “ use up those pears” . Why didn’t I just eat the pears ?! I have absolutely no willpower that’s why !

museumum · 28/04/2024 13:22

12 muffins, 3 people so four each - three days probably. If there were fresh muffins in the house why would you leave them for days?

surely though if people are baking two dozen they’re for a party or bake sale? Before I has dc and my own business I’d bulk bake for group camping trips and weekends away - old habit from guide camp :)

wpalfhal · 28/04/2024 13:23

A week for a family to eat 12 muffins...that may say more about the cooking ability of the chef tbh...

maddening · 28/04/2024 13:24

What is blhh?

Hermittrismegistus · 28/04/2024 13:25

Do your family actually like your baking? I can't imagine tasty baked goods lasting know than 2 days in my home.

Sadperson1 · 28/04/2024 13:26

They’d be gone in a day here, maybe 2, 3 teens in the house. Nothing lasts long and they are all slim, oh to be young again 🤣🤣.

TubeScreamer · 28/04/2024 13:26

With teenage boys these things vanish within minutes,

theholesinmyapologies · 28/04/2024 13:29

My DD made 2 dozen chocolate chip cookies last night. I'd be surprised they lasted until Tuesday in this house.

Sahara123 · 28/04/2024 13:31

Cake needs to be eaten fresh as well, don’t fancy week old stale cake .
I can really justify cake eating …

HappyAsASandboy · 28/04/2024 13:32

12 cookies the size of bakery cookies would last one day in my house. Maybe 2 days depending on what else is going on.

There are six of us. 12 cookies is two each. Easily a morning snack and an after-dinner pudding and they're gone!

Groovee · 28/04/2024 13:43

I bake then hand it out to people. My baking in the school staff room is usually crumbs by the time I go on lunch.

12 muffins might last 2 days in my house. Two teenagers.

Same in my house tbh but my 2nd teen boy is a 4yr old with hollow legs lol and i have a grown man. The wee one would probably take about a day to eat 1 as he’s a grazer lol

SlashBeef · 28/04/2024 13:47

Family of six here. Baked goods last about an hour.

BeachHutsAndDeckchairs · 28/04/2024 13:51

They're usually gone within the hour. Anything that we bake, be it bread or cake or buns, as soon as it comes out of the oven, everyone appears around them like a pack of gannets and they're gone. I thought that was normal?

pinkpirlie · 28/04/2024 13:52

Wouldn't last an hour in my house, just two adults and a BF baby 🤣
We would easily eat and entire batch of cookies before they even cooled. It's why I don't do any baking as we have zero self control.

I'd be huge if I imagined smelling muffins. I imagine smelling lettuce instead.

OMG this must be why I can't lose weight. Must remember next time to be the lettuce not the muffin. Or is celery better?

FreebieWallopFridge · 28/04/2024 14:02

12 cookies the size of bakery cookies??? 2 days max in this house. Same for muffins. I can’t fathom freezing a muffin because they haven’t been eaten.

Some people eat more cakes

Never was a truer word said.

theonlygirl · 28/04/2024 14:07

3 / 4 days tops. DH won't eat any, I'll try to restrict myself to one a day, the kids will hoover up the rest. No cake or cookie has ever seen the inside of our freezer.

Snowpaw · 28/04/2024 14:07

If I bake a batch of muffins we would eat one fresh out of the oven and then I'd put a few for the next day or so in a tub then freeze the rest and just defrost as and when.

We are only a family of 3, one of whom has reversed pre-diabetes so doesn't eat any sugar, so we just wouldn't get through them all if I didn't freeze them.

PyongyangKipperbang · 28/04/2024 14:08

I think it depends. I dont have a sweet tooth at all so if I do eat cake it will be maybe once or twice a year for a special birthday to be polite. So cake in the house would end up in the bin.

But savoury stuff...no problem. I once made 6 really nice (and large) sausage rolls for a birthday tea we were delivering for my mums 70th during lockdown. The next day I had to make 6 more Blush and use a fan to cool them down in time to deliver them!

Moonshine5 · 28/04/2024 14:08

One evening

SirenSays · 28/04/2024 14:08

Cookies wouldn't last a day with my DC. I bake often, I always have friends, colleagues, neighbours...fighting over who gets them.

CrispieCake · 28/04/2024 14:10

12 cookies would last our family about 5 minutes.

Anyone having a bath or shower at the crucial moment had better hope that someone else takes pity on them and saves a couple, otherwise they'd emerge clean and fresh but to a plate of crumbs.
