For voting Tory

I know what the Tories are and no, I don't like it. But I'm a woman, I have daughters and I come from generations of women who've been abused and dismissed because of their sex. I want better for my girls but I can't do it on my own. I need a government who will (at least give lip service to) supporting me. Am I a Tory? no. But the last thing women need is to be fighting their own government for basic recognition, so Tory it is.

Anyone who thinks the Tories are better for women is delusional.

If this is honestly the most important issue affecting your life and those of the people you love - no issue with their record on housing, austerity, public service cuts, asset stripping the country, fucking up Brexit, fucking up Covid, failing to give a shit about people unable to pay their bills, then I envy you. You're easily manipulated and exactly the kind of voter Tories want.

I'll give a shout out to this poster as well . You are so right

FlightwasfromNewark · 16/04/2024 13:05

Rape clause Op?

SheffieldIsntSoBad · 16/04/2024 13:06

You're not being unreasonable at all.

Everyone has the right to vote for whoever they want. I will be tactically voting against Labour (won't prevent them from winning, but as a mother of girls I won't have it on my conscience).

I won't berate anyone else for their choice. It's thanks, ironically, to strong women that we even have the choice.

Right now I can no longer give any care pr consideration to the Trans debate.
It is such a small concern when measured against the real issues we are facing in this country, that are mostly due to the Tory Governement.

So right now my priority is
Education, NHS, The Economy, welfare etc
And the Tories are absolutly destroying them
So if there's a party that can fix the above but can't tell a man from a woman that's still the party getting my vote.

And how, pray, can anyone fix education, welfare, or the NHS if they insist men are women?
I'm baffled by people who see this as some kind of side-issue. It's fundamental. Education - my friend's child who is being transed. NHS - handing out the puberty blockers. Welfare - will have to pick up the pieces. ETC.
Honestly I think party politics - which is tribal - has had its day. I can't vote for anyone in terms of a party, but I'd support a coalition that had both Victoria Atkins and Rosie Duffield in it. That's the future.

This 1000%

When the manifestos are released then we all need to read them and vote for who we believe meets our needs. If that's the point you raised then you go ahead.

PeaceOnThePorch · 16/04/2024 13:10

I don’t think the Tories are great for women but at least on this issue, they’re on the correct side.

I won’t be voting labour this time but not sure I can bring myself to vote Tory.

I’m angry that this has become a political issue. Trans women are men and therefore shouldn’t be in women’s spaces, kids need protecting from this harmful ideology etc, it should go without saying.

SheffieldIsntSoBad · 16/04/2024 13:16

@heldinadream well said. It's baffling that people don't realise this issue also directly affects education, the NHS, funding... All of it. Women's safety must be a priority.

Humphriescushion · 16/04/2024 13:18

Cazpar · 16/04/2024 12:35

I'm sure the millions of women who've been pushed into poverty by austerity, who've seen Sure Start centres scrapped, who've had to wait years for justice because of cuts to the legal system, who can't get decent maternity or gynaecological care thanks to cuts to the NHS, who have seen no progress to fix the pay gap or to tackle punitive zero hours contracts (which disproportionately affect women), who have been crippled by care responsibilities while being paid a pittance, and who've once again seen a budget designed to help men rather than women will be overjoyed.

This with bells on!

CamoPenguin · 16/04/2024 13:20

Just here to agree with the majority that YABU!

EilonwyWithRedGoldHair · 16/04/2024 13:21

I sympathise, but hell will freeze over before I'd even contemplate voting Tory, let alone do it.

It’s impacting everything though, from the nhs to welfare, education and policing/crime stats. It’s impacting women and children but the whole of society really.

It should be a ‘small concern’, but a very small minority seem to hold a lot of weight. It’s disgusting that it’s been allowed.

BishyBarnyBee · 16/04/2024 13:23

If you believe the Torties cynical and flippant adoption of trans issues as a policy focus represents any kind of commitment to women's rights, you are deluded.

There may be a few MPs who have given it some serious thought and are speaking in good faith. But most are just playing to the anti woke agenda. They will also be happy to chuck any other marginalised group under the bus if they think it will play to their voters.

My view is that the Labour Party has made a hash of this because they are genuinely interested in equality, and this is an issue where the rights of one marginalised group cannot be easily reconciled with the rights of the other. It's much easier to pick sides than to try and find a measured way through.

Waxdrip · 16/04/2024 13:26

I don't see gender affirmation as a culture war issue because it has too many real life consequences for women and children. It's fundamental not cultural.

Having said that, nothing could persuade me to vote Tory. Labour lost me over this, so I'll vote for a single issue local candidate instead.

NCprivatelife · 16/04/2024 13:30

It depends if you want to make a point or make the country better.

With the Cass Review, the tide is turning on the trans issue anyway. But nothing will stop the Tories fucking up the economy, stripmining the NHS or annihilating the social safety net.

The Tories are the party for the people who are out for themselves, like the poster above who would prioritise being able to give her own kids an elite education over voting for a party who might put some infrastructure in place that would protect the children with less well off parents from poverty, neglect, abuse and crap education. But no, she prefers to kick down at those kids because she dissaproves of their parents, and pull up the ladder behind her own. Classic Tory. If that's who you want to be, then by all means vote for them, but don't kid yourself you're protecting women and children by so doing. The category 'women and girls' may not include males, but it bloody definitely includes a large number of poor, disabled, marginalised and disavantaged people, who will be completely fucked over by another 5 years of Tory government. Or are you only interested in protecting the nice well-to-do white women and girls you know?

HeadNorth · 16/04/2024 13:34

Vote for who you want but don’t pretend voting for the Tories is feminist or to benefit women. Women and children fare the worst under the Tories on any measure, unless they are wealthy.

Joleyne · 16/04/2024 13:35

Oh, do stop it!

Had the Conservatives done something about all this a few years ago, instead of first championing Trans Rights, then trying to use it as a political weapon against the Opposition, we might not be in the current mess we're in.

This happened on YOUR watch, Conservatives! It was YOUR Prime Minister who addressed the Pink Awards in 2017.

Ask Penny Mordaunt and Maria Millar what the hell they thought they were playing at - and what they believe now - before you start pointing fingers outside your own party.

I don't have time to worry about this I have two jobs, my kids school is massively underfunded. My mum has been waiting years for an operation. There is sewage in the water.
No offence but you're an idiot.

YABVVVVU

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/04/2024 13:39

Seriously @Whatismypasswordthen?

You know that the Trans shitshow happened under and because of the Tories.

Tory PM May put Self ID on the table.
They wrote genderwoo into our legistlation. Including a Maternity Bill.🤯
Tory government minister Penny Mordaunt declared TWAW and TMAM at the Despatch Box.
Tory MP's reported members of the public to their employers and the police for retweeting JKR.
They promoted the "Stonewalling" of our institutions. The CEO was a Tory donor.🙄
They repeatedly appointed genderwoo believers to Secretary of State for Education with disastrous effects in schools.
The world's first trans MP is a Tory. Then appointed him/her/them to Women's and Equalities Commision.
Tory PM Johnson refused to say that only women have a cervix.
As Johnson's Chancellor, Tory PM Sunak said that a woman is whatever Boris Johnson says.

And that's on top of all the other shit they've done to women since coming to power in 2010.😡😡😡

Some Tories know what a woman is, some don't. None of them give a shit about us either way.

YABU.

User2460177 · 16/04/2024 12:39

I would vote for them too (for the very first time) after seeing Victoria Atkins telling off Lloyd Russell Moyle. It was the best thing I’ve ever seen in parliament

Link? Sounds interesting

kirinm · 16/04/2024 13:39

I'd be keen to know what has happened over the last 14 years that has benefitted women and is the result of Tory policy.

Icepop79 · 16/04/2024 13:41

The Tories have been in government for the past 13 years. They’ve had a massive majority in the House of Commons for the last 5 years. They could have brought in a whole host of laws to resolve the trans debate. Name one single thing they have done. Just one. With all that power, they have stoked the culture wars rather than sought to end them.

If you give them another 5 years of power, what are they going to do this time that they’ve singularly failed to do in the last 3 electoral terms? They talk a good talk about respecting women’s rights but when given the opportunity they’ve done fuck all.

ObliviousCoalmine · 16/04/2024 13:41

YABU. And naive.

Icepop79 · 16/04/2024 13:42

Oh, and if one viral clip of one Tory MP telling off an opposition MP is enough to persuade you to vote for the most corrupt government this country has ever had, then I have no words.
