DH's scruffy friend

ScruffinessIsContagious · 06/03/2024 10:50

Mostly lighthearted but I'm also curious.

For the past 6+ years, we’ve been a group of 5. A few months ago, one of DH’s childhood mates came back to oz after spending a couple of years abroad, and we’ve since been a band of 6. We all just got back from a week-long city break, and looking through the photos, her scruffiness is apparent and it actually really bothers me. I know the reasons definitely aren’t financial so I was wondering why.

Her “uniform” (even when not on vacation) consists of chino shorts, oversized tees, and sandals. That’s it. She wore that to museums, walks around the city, fancy cafes, and even restaurants??!! I’m not a fashionista but surely there’s a time and place for a nice dress, some slim-fit trousers and a fitted top, or even a button-down linen shirt to go with her shorts? She’s very slim so surely it’s easy to find clothes that fit? Saw her after work once and she wore a tee, oversized “parachute trousers”, and huge sneakers so it’s not just us she doesn’t smarten up for!

AIBU to wonder why someone would choose to be like that?

I wear what I feel comfortable in, I wouldn't GAF what you think and would judge you immensely for being so shallow.

Maraa · 06/03/2024 12:44

Erghhh I hate these posts.

in the politest way possible, what she wears is nothing to do with you. She may not like how you dress. I may not like how my friends or husbands dress at time but it’s none of my business. I was taught up with the manner of the only time you comment on someone’s clothes is to tell them their skirt is tucked in their knickers etc….

Sera1989 · 06/03/2024 12:47

I am slim and wear oversized clothes most of the time... gosh, what must people think of me??? 😱. Her clothing sounds fine, no one is under any obligation to wear a dress for you. I hope the other friends in the group are less judgemental. Two things spring to mind, either she is "scruffy" but attractive and you have a problem with that, or she's not straight and you have a problem with that

Ducksinthebath · 06/03/2024 12:48

That actually sounds very typical of a younger person these days and is bang on trend.

Whereas your slim fitting trousers and button down shirt sound frumpy AF.

You sound jealous.

Collywobblewobbles · 06/03/2024 12:51

A shame minding-your-own-business isn't contagious

Rocknrolla21 · 06/03/2024 12:58

Who’s betting the op won’t be back 😂😂😂

SherbetDips · 06/03/2024 13:01

You sound very unkind

Glitterdash · 06/03/2024 13:05

Wow I feel almost personally offended! I dress exactly like that in the summer.

Caroparo52 · 06/03/2024 13:05

Clothes are important to you and not your husband's "slim" friend. Maybe find something else to do rather than bitch

IncompleteSenten · 06/03/2024 13:06

Rocknrolla21 · 06/03/2024 12:58

Who’s betting the op won’t be back 😂😂😂

if she is, it'll be to reveal it was a reverse.

MorningSunshineSparkles · 06/03/2024 13:09

If this wasn’t so obviously a wind up I’d be in despair at the lack of intelligence you have OP.

DanceToThisBeatForevermore · 06/03/2024 13:10

This reminds me of my old boss who thought we looked “scruffy” unless we dressed like her - high heeled boots, pleather leggings and a black appliqué jumper 🙄 I’m a hairdresser and we all looked a lot cooler than her in our DMs/Nikes/jeans/tees.

CactusMactus · 06/03/2024 13:11

If I were you I would totally tell her... "look love, you need to make more of an effort to be in our gang..."
Totally reasonable and not in the slightest bit childish...

beethecrackon24995 · 06/03/2024 13:14

OP you sound like a real dull twat 😅

Wellhellooooodear · 06/03/2024 13:14

Why does it bother you? I wouldn't dress like that personally but I wouldn't care if someone else does.

MadamVastra · 06/03/2024 13:16

Deathbyfluffy · 06/03/2024 11:51

If it helps, women judge men too - I have a female friend who constantly makes snide remarks about the comfy clothes I choose to wear.

People should be happy in their own skin wearing what they want, regardless of gender. Thankfully I'm slowly phasing this 'friend' out as her constant sniping is doing my tits in.

No it doesn't help

DottieMoon · 06/03/2024 13:17

You sound like a horrible judgemental person. You need a good look at YOURSELF not your friend.

LittleLegsKeepGoing · 06/03/2024 13:25

I definitely have a different idea of scruffy from the OP.

In my head scruffy is crumpled/unclean/torn/very worn clothing, unwashed/unbrushed hair and dirt under the finger nails.

It's an odd thing to be worked up about, how a partner's friend prefers casual, loose fitting clothes...that happens to be in fashion at the moment. @ScruffinessIsContagious you're either jealous or judgemental - neither is an attractive personality trait and much more difficult to overcome than fashion choices

SpringSprungALeak · 06/03/2024 13:29

takealettermsjones · 06/03/2024 10:56

Could you be scraping the barrel for something to criticise your husband's newly returned, slim, female friend for. 🤭

@takealettermsjones

Gosh Really. You think?

👍🏻🤣🤣🤣

ttcat37 · 06/03/2024 13:30

I’m in the 3% that agree with you. Life dictates that you dress appropriately for what you’re doing, and she sounds like a scruff. I’d be embarrassed going to a restaurant with her dressed like that.

SpringSprungALeak · 06/03/2024 13:31

@ScruffinessIsContagious

why is it contagious? Do you find your DH mirroring her style?

it actually really bothers me

why???

CactusMactus · 06/03/2024 13:11

On Wednesdays we wear pink....

BusyMummy001 · 06/03/2024 13:32

I’d delete this post, OP. It doesn’t reflect well on you.

VeryQuaintIrene · 06/03/2024 13:32

This friend sounds a lot more fun to be around than you, Princess Judgy-Pants.

bookteafag · 06/03/2024 13:33

To stuck up for me are you the one that made a thread about frumpy looking clothes.
I look like a tramp to day and dont give a fuck what others think.
Actions speak louder than what someone is wearing and for the sounds of it you bloody red with jealousy.
She`s happy with herself but your not happy with you point your finger at yourself.
OP WONT BE BACK AS SHE DID NOT GET THE COMMENTS SHE WANTED.
