DH's scruffy friend

Mostly lighthearted but I'm also curious.

For the past 6+ years, we’ve been a group of 5. A few months ago, one of DH’s childhood mates came back to oz after spending a couple of years abroad, and we’ve since been a band of 6. We all just got back from a week-long city break, and looking through the photos, her scruffiness is apparent and it actually really bothers me. I know the reasons definitely aren’t financial so I was wondering why.

Her “uniform” (even when not on vacation) consists of chino shorts, oversized tees, and sandals. That’s it. She wore that to museums, walks around the city, fancy cafes, and even restaurants??!! I’m not a fashionista but surely there’s a time and place for a nice dress, some slim-fit trousers and a fitted top, or even a button-down linen shirt to go with her shorts? She’s very slim so surely it’s easy to find clothes that fit? Saw her after work once and she wore a tee, oversized “parachute trousers”, and huge sneakers so it’s not just us she doesn’t smarten up for!

AIBU to wonder why someone would choose to be like that?

Are you and DH wearing cocktail attire for trips to the museum?

Personally, I would consider chinos to be smart. They are what I wear for job interviews, weddings and funerals. I don’t own a skirt or dress.

GottaLoveKimchi · 07/03/2024 17:23

I hope she has a go on ya husband tbf lol

ButWhatAboutTheBees · 07/03/2024 17:40

Not a surprise OP hasn't been back after being soundly called out for her rude and unnecessary judgement of this woman

Scruffy, really? Not what I'd use to describe her

allfurcoatnoknickers · 07/03/2024 19:11

She sounds pretty trendy to me. I work at a university and a lot of the students are wearing chinos and a baggy t-shirt, 90s style. Honestly, I'm just glad the pendulum has swung back from bodycon, countouring and high heels. Let people be comfy!

Isthatajay · 07/03/2024 19:14

Jesus. Do the girl a favour and remove yourself from the friend group. Your an embarrassment 😳

Griff1963 · 07/03/2024 19:18

Is she happy? Yes? Then leave her TF alone!

Upallnight2 · 07/03/2024 19:20

Maybe she thinks you're too try hard?

toomuchfaff · 07/03/2024 19:20

Well this didn't go how you imagined did it OP! You at least thought you'd find some kindred souls willing to bash on the DH friend... goes to show that the world isn't all bed!

Mumof2NDers · 07/03/2024 19:26

I used to be really careful about what I wore. I’m 53 now and I’m at the point where I don’t give a fuck what people think of me and am a bit if a scruff tbh! I live in jeggings and t shirts with DM boots. A lot of times my clothes don’t even match! I don’t care, I’m comfy 😀

Mermaidsarereal · 07/03/2024 19:26

Don't really understand why you're so bothered, she's not harming you. Unless you're a bit jealous of her coming into your circle/spending time with DH?

NothingVenturedAndAllThat · 07/03/2024 19:40

You sound sneering and rude. What someone else is comfortable wearing is none of your business.

Laura0076 · 07/03/2024 19:44

Wow... who needs enemies with "friends" like you.
I can only think you posted this for a reaction... if she's happy what's it got to do with anyone else! People like yourself are the reason others think they have to conform to some stupid social etiquette....

Lillette · 07/03/2024 21:05

A very small middle class view. Expand your mind and you might have more interesting things to occupy those little grey cells!

Liann811 · 07/03/2024 22:17

I suppose you are dressed up to the nines eveytime you go out your front door.
You need to get down from your high horse and maybe learn to except people for who they are

ALJT · 07/03/2024 22:46

Who need enemies with friends like this WOW leave the poor woman alone

Well, I laughed.

We had an old friend of my husband's come from abroad to stay. He was a successful lawyer and had also gained a sizeable inheritance. Yet he wore old shorts and threadbare T-shirts with holes in them. He explained that this was so if his luggage went missing or there was some mishap, he wouldn't lose his good or favourite clothes. And he was comfortable and happy. What appeared to be "scruffy" was a deliberate choice.

the80sweregreat · 08/03/2024 06:36

She sounds like my kind of woman !

Could you be scraping the barrel for something to criticise your husband's newly returned, slim, female friend for. 🤭

This is so accurate.

You were so sure of yourself in your post, OP. Don't you want to come back and defend yourself?

Namechangedforspooky · 08/03/2024 07:28

I love being scruffy, I’m not sure why. I also earn enough to wear smart clothes but they just don’t make me comfortable. I’m worried now that I’m being judged too!

As long as personal hygiene isn’t an issue I can’t see the problem.

@niadainud

L.o.l who the hell turns up to someone's funeral with 👖 jeans and hiking 👢 boots?

was it a funeral celebration of deceased attitude to life ect by wearing just very casual wear ect?
that's still befitting of that occssion of what deceased person or family's wishes were then..
