Am I boring…which would you prefer?

This Saturday…friends birthday lunch..lots of girls only, beautiful place by the beach, lovely food, drinks, entertainment, quite fancy and you need to get dressed up..2-3 hours long.

My original plan for Saturday (before she planned it)

Drive to a beautiful nature place with trees, stream, picnic tables..take Dd, 5 and Ddog, with Dh, pack a picnic, Dd to wear wellies and take a net in the stream
walk for a couple of hours

Which would you prefer?

For context, I’m 45

I love the sound of both! Apart from the getting dressed up smart part

FourLeggedBuckers · 18/01/2024 17:10

spearthatbroc · 18/01/2024 17:06

and if you had a close friend who did want to do this for her birthday?

Wouldn’t happen. I’m friends with people who either understand how much I hate those sorts of situations, or hate them equally themselves. Anyone who expected me to attend an event like that and didn’t accept a polite decline of their invitation simply couldn’t be a friend of mine. We would be entirely incompatible.

Sometimes a thread just grabs your attention. And I'm on the train so have the time!

I fail to see how anything I'm saying isn't in the OP's posts. Although I must apologise for accidentally inventing a third party. It is the friend whose birthday it is who invited OP, not an additional friend.

you have also invested that the Op ever said there was a clash!!

Dermotissuchafidget · 18/01/2024 17:11

@DappledThings Thank you! I thought it was very simple. It’s just that my preference is not to get all dressed up, spend lots of money, drink lots, dance etc…which makes me sound pretty dull and I would have loved that years ago…that’s all my post is about really
I adore my friends too but I think I’m just a stay at home type of person these days

spearthatbroc · 18/01/2024 17:13

Are you going to go to the lunch?

AGiven · 18/01/2024 17:14

Lunch with friends definitely

DappledThings · 18/01/2024 17:14

spearthatbroc · 18/01/2024 17:10

you have also invested that the Op ever said there was a clash!!

But that's the whole point of it. Of there wasn't a clash then OP could just do both.

And she says the walk was the original plan, before the birthday lunch plan. So the birthday lunch plan has obviously been made at the same time. If there was no clash it would just be an additional plan not the original and new plans.

spearthatbroc · 18/01/2024 17:14

My original plan for Saturday (before she planned it)

was that in your original post or did you edit it Op? completely missed it!

So the birthday thing is in the evening if there’s dancing?

phoenixrosehere · 18/01/2024 17:14

I don’t think you’re boring nor should you care that others might for preferring one over the other.

I’d enjoy both for myself. Saying that, I would go to my friend’s birthday party even if it wasn’t really my preference because that’s my friend and she invited me.

yes but was that in the OP the first time!!

WineIsNotGoodForMe · 18/01/2024 17:15

January? Anything that wasn’t a picnic outdoors!

spearthatbroc · 18/01/2024 17:15

why can’t you do the walk early on in the day

and then the dinner with your friend

so no clash

spearthatbroc · 18/01/2024 17:18

if this is the sort of thing your close friend enjoys, presumably you’ve done this kind of thing quite a few times over the years with her?

EffieGraysDisappointingWeddingNight · 18/01/2024 17:19

Both sound good?

Lovely to have a wholesome walk in the countryside with husband, child and dog. Also lovely to have a boozy lunch with pals. Most people's lives are a balance of family things and them some socialising with friends. Nice to have balance, nice to nurture friendships.

TheWizardHowl · 18/01/2024 17:20

Both sound nice but as it's your friend's birthday presumably she has chosen what she would prefer to do?

Dermotissuchafidget · 18/01/2024 17:21

@spearthatbroc Not edited my post, not sure how to.
It’s at lunch, dancing and drinking at a lunch do

Yes. If it was edited it would say edited and you would still be able to see the original post anyway.

TheWizardHowl · 18/01/2024 17:20

Yes, which clashes with OP's original, entirely unrelated to the birthday plans!

It's nothing to do with the friend's preferences.

Dermotissuchafidget · 18/01/2024 17:23

My post was quite simple (to me)
Just pondering the fact that I’m pretty boring as my preference would be for the second option if I could
This is my friend, so I will obviously go with the first thing, but if I could I’d rather the second. Hence my..,Is there something wrong with me thoughts…that’s all

OP posts:
OhItsOnlyCynthia · 18/01/2024 17:23

I'd definitely opt for lunch with friends. I don't see my friends often enough, I see my family every day. The family walk sounds pretty standard weekend stuff, the celebratory lunch isn't going to happen again.

5128gap · 18/01/2024 17:25

I'd like both. Different but equally enjoyable. I wouldn't say the family day was any more 'boring' as both sound fairly calm, relaxed, grown up events to me.

Dermotissuchafidget · 18/01/2024 17:21

@spearthatbroc Not edited my post, not sure how to.

and can’t get up and do a morning romp in the woods with coffee and hot choc?

spearthatbroc · 18/01/2024 17:33

Or birthday lunch on Sat
Wood walk on sunday

FourLeggedBuckers · 18/01/2024 17:41

Surely the OP’s point is that she’s not fussed about getting dressed up and going dancing at all. She would rather have a chilled out walk / picnic / play around outdoors with her kid.

I really don’t know why people are trying to solve the issue with suggestions about timings - that’s not the point.

Cherrysoup · 18/01/2024 17:44

Can’t you do the walk on Sunday instead?
