This Saturday…friends birthday lunch..lots of girls only, beautiful place by the beach, lovely food, drinks, entertainment, quite fancy and you need to get dressed up..2-3 hours long.

My original plan for Saturday (before she planned it)

Drive to a beautiful nature place with trees, stream, picnic tables..take Dd, 5 and Ddog, with Dh, pack a picnic, Dd to wear wellies and take a net in the stream
walk for a couple of hours

Which would you prefer?

For context, I’m 45

were your thoughts taking husband and child to the birthday, for your friend's celebration?

Didn't she want just girls' time?

eta ah!! I've completely misunderstood your post @Dermotissuchafidget apologies. Ignore my questions 😊

LikeagoddamnVampire · 18/01/2024 10:53

I'd do the friends birthday lunch as getting my whole group of friends together when in our 40s/50s with all our commitments is a fucking military operation that only succeeds about 4 times a year!! And takes a lot of planning and date shifting.
Plus it's fun to get dressed up once in a while and "feel like a woman" rather than just Mum.

You can do the simple family thing another day easily.

AgnesX · 18/01/2024 10:53

Depends on how close you are to your friends and how good the chat is likely to be. And how much effort you want to make.

Both sound good if you're in a warmer part of the world than Scotland!

MereDintofPandiculation · 18/01/2024 10:43

Getting dressed up for the beach?!

A place BY the beach she said, so I'm thinking a pretty restaurant with a great sea view.

MassageForLife · 18/01/2024 10:54

They both sound good. I would probably do the birthday lunch and plan the family day out for another time.

FatimaWhippedRed · 18/01/2024 10:54

Both. They both sound lovely so I'd want to do the girls day Saturday and then picnic Sunday.

Lyricallie · 18/01/2024 10:54

I’m confused by the options. Both are nice days out but dog walk and wellies can be any weekend whereas I like to celebrate my birthday with a bit more special-ness. However you do you.

LikeagoddamnVampire · 18/01/2024 10:55

@Riverlee she says it's a friends birthday not hers? That's the way I read it anyway.

Dermotissuchafidget · 18/01/2024 10:55

Is my post really confusing 🙈😂

It’s not my birthday, it’s a friends.
I’m not angry about anything
No one has said I’m boring

I’m wondering if I am as my heart lies in the boring walk

MasterBeth · 18/01/2024 10:56

One is a special day for someone, one is (I presume) something you could do any weekend.

I like spending time with my family on "ordinary" walks but I would look forward to the party day as well.

(Preferring one over the other doesn't make you boring, though.)

Seedsout · 18/01/2024 10:56

YABU for saying DDog

BIWI · 18/01/2024 10:57

Well, no, @Dermotissuchafidget your post wasn't clear!

You asked 'am I boring' in the title of this thread. You also went on to say how old you were - implying it's your birthday and that someone has said you're boring!

SnapdragonToadflax · 18/01/2024 10:57

Both sound lovely, but the beach day sounds similar to what I do with my five year old regularly so I would go for the lunch with friends. I'm 42 and rarely get to see my friends without all the kids as well, and I can't relax properly if my child is around.

My absolute favourite thing to do for my birthday (which I do most years, although not always on my actual birthday), is stay in a hotel room on my own and have a day to myself in a pretty city.

FuckBalledTwattyPiss · 18/01/2024 10:59

The former, assuming it's warm enough.

BubbleBubbleBubbleBubblePop · 18/01/2024 11:00

I can't decide, I'd love both! Although if you don't get much time away from the kids usually then I'd probably choose the friends birthday.

catsnhats11 · 18/01/2024 11:01

They both sounds nice, why is it a competition?

Your Op is totally unclear!

LightSwerve · 18/01/2024 11:02

In my heart I would prefer the family/nature outing.

Dermotissuchafidget · 18/01/2024 11:02

@BIWI In the first line I
say it’s my friends birthday 😂

I understood your OP!

shearwater2 · 18/01/2024 11:03

Why not do both at different times and extend the celebration?

spearthatbroc · 18/01/2024 11:04

are the dh and dd you mention… yours or hers? and you’re accompanying alone?

madeinmanc · 18/01/2024 11:04

It doesn't make you boring at all, but you do really have to push yourself sometimes to make an effort and go to events, parties etc. and maintain your friendships. They are so important as well as family.

Dermotissuchafidget · 18/01/2024 11:04

@LightSwerve Phew 😅

OhGoOnThen0 · 18/01/2024 11:05

I'd do both! Your plans aren't time precious so can be moved to Sunday.
