Am I boring…which would you prefer?

This Saturday…friends birthday lunch..lots of girls only, beautiful place by the beach, lovely food, drinks, entertainment, quite fancy and you need to get dressed up..2-3 hours long.

My original plan for Saturday (before she planned it)

Drive to a beautiful nature place with trees, stream, picnic tables..take Dd, 5 and Ddog, with Dh, pack a picnic, Dd to wear wellies and take a net in the stream
walk for a couple of hours

Which would you prefer?

For context, I’m 45

The “boring” walk/picnic can happen whenever. I really value my friends and put in the time and effort to see them. PLUS I’d really enjoy having a grown up meal at a lovely location. So my preference would be for that (and walk with family another time). Isn’t the nice thing about life/the weekend, that you can do both? Doesn’t really matter what your preference is.

pinkspeakers · 18/01/2024 11:48

Depends on the weather!
In the summer I might prefer no. 2.
But in the winter then indoors is probably a safer bet.

Greycottage · 18/01/2024 11:50

@Dermotissuchafidget Your post wasn’t at all confusing, the level of reading comprehension on mumsnet is really low. And people think that posting “I don’t get it?? I’m confused?” is a useful contribution to a thread, rather than just reading the OP again until they do get it.

Fwiw I would prefer the second activity. I prefer mooching around in nature with my immediate family. More so as I get older too.

BeBraveLittlePenguin · 18/01/2024 11:51

You were intending to take your husband and child along to your friend's birthday, for which you planned an outdoor walk?

pinkspeakers · 18/01/2024 11:53

Ah, I was confused too! I thought they were two alternative events for your friend's birthday lunch. You had planned an outdoor event for everyone including kids, but then someone else took over and planned the other event instead.

Anyway, I don't think you are boring. I think it is the opposite of boring to get pleasure out of a walk in nature with your family. However, personally I would prioritise the get together with friends and do the walk on another day, and enjoy being able to do both. Unless there is some reason why the ability to do the family walk is very limited because all your weekends for the next few weeks are booked solid with other commitments. In which case I might stick with the walk and say you already had plans.

Case in point 😂 Unless this is perfect satire.

Getting dressed up for the beach?!

Where does the OP say she's going to the beach? She's going to a restaurant by the beach. It shouldn't be any great leap to comprehend that there are smart restaurants overlooking beaches.

Both activities sound lovely to me. I'm not a particularly sociable person and I love nature, walking, countryside etc, so the walk/picnic sounds great, but I also do like good food, a laugh with my close friends and being by the sea, so the lunch also sounds like a nice way to spend an afternoon. I would also say that you could do the walk/picnic any weekend you like, whereas fancy lunches are a rare occurrence, so I wouldn't really mind doing the lunch this weekend and the walk the weekend after.

It's not 'boring' to prefer either one. Why would it be?

Crikeyalmighty · 18/01/2024 11:57

would have to be the 1st option- given you can do the 2nd option any old time

Olika · 18/01/2024 11:58

So much confusion though your OP was clear. You can do picnic any other time so I would go to friend's bday party.

How do you get that impression? The walk was planned then, later and entirely separately, OP was invited to a friend's birthday lunch.

This really isn't confusing.

Getting dressed up for the beach?!

No…a place BY the beach

Wishimaywishimight · 18/01/2024 12:00

Surely you can do a trip to the beach any time? The birthday lunch is a one off and sounds great, I would definitely go for that.

ManateeFair · 18/01/2024 12:01

WTF is it with Mumsnetters that they can't a) understand simple sentences and b) comprehend that not everyone lives in the UK?

'But it's below freezing!! Why would you have a picnic!! I'm confused!!!' CLEARLY IT ISN'T FUCKING BELOW FREEZING WHEREVER THE OP IS, OR SHE WOULDN'T BE TALKING ABOUT PICNICS AND BEACHES, SUSAN

mindutopia · 18/01/2024 12:03

The 2nd. I'd be bored to tears sitting through a fancy lunch when I could be outside.

LuckySantangelo35 · 18/01/2024 12:04

Option 1

surely no one would actually sack off option 1 to do option 2 would they?!

Beautiful3 · 18/01/2024 12:04

I'd much prefer the original plan, and I'm 41.

@mindutopia

why would you be bored to tears with your friends? Do you not like your friends?

LWSnow · 18/01/2024 12:05

I’m not sure if appreciate husbands and kids at a girls lunch.

Good thing that isn't anything OP suggested would happen then

Your friends bore you to tears?

Yestodessertplease · 18/01/2024 12:09

Option 1 (I'm in my fifties), as long as there is no back story that you only know the friend or don't like her friends. I would then do option 2 on Sunday

spearthatbroc · 18/01/2024 12:09

@mindutopia you need to get better friends or you need to be a better friend perhaps

DaftFlerken · 18/01/2024 12:10

birthday lunch

foxfoxohmyfox · 18/01/2024 12:13

The beach option for me. But, I also couldn't be arsed to get dressed up, it possibly sounds expensive, could have potential to go on into the eve and go elsewhere after ? I would want to be in bed by 10pm type of thing.
The nature option would appeal as cheaper, no need to get dressed up and I could go along and look like sh*t. But would depend on how warm it is.

Plus is this your DH going with you and your friend and your DC ? would your friend be happy with that and no other friends ?
