AIBU to think 2 hours of Fortnite after school is a lot for a just Year 8 DC?

I think 1.5 hours is more than enough but apparently 'everyone' allows their DC way more.

Interested to know facts from others (not judgments etc)

When my DS was year 8 so 13 he was on it more like 4 hours after school but it didn't have an impact on his school work or sleep so I didn't see an issue

mambojambodothetango · 09/01/2024 19:29

My 8YO is not allowed to play Fortnite. He plays Fifa or Minecraft for about 90 mins after school then it goes off. He'll be allowed Fortnite when he's 10 and even then I'm not happy about it.

whiteboardking · 09/01/2024 19:36

Most Y7 - Y9 I know seem to get home 3.30 pm and play on it. Prob til dinner. Maybe after. Play around sports and homework. Bed at 10pm
I work til 5-6 o'clock and DC home alone. I'd rather they did that than start baking cakes or other messy stuff. Tbh
So yes easily 2 hours.
Mine had lost interest in fortnite but new versions seem to have them back on it

HowHaveYouLostYourPEkitAgain · 09/01/2024 19:37

I work full time so I can't do much about what my DC do between getting home from school and me finishing work. They both (Y10 and Y8) can easily fit in two hours of gaming. I'd prefer a bit more focus/effort on homework, but they do it without me asking and school have no complaints.

The 15- year-old says "everyone else plays at 10 or 11 at night, but you make me go to bed". I do wonder how true that is!

NachosAndCheese · 09/01/2024 19:40

Mine play on FIFA/Roblox/Fortnite until dinner then they go off.

Some of my friend’s DC can be on it til 9pm or later.

Runningoutofusernamestochange · 09/01/2024 19:41

I have a year 6, he’s allowed 2 hours on a weeknight after school, longer at weekends as long as chores/homework are done.

ElonsPsychic · 09/01/2024 19:44

Its addictive. 1 day a week for a few hours is the limit in our house. 11yo DS had withdrawals for the first few weeks. I personally feel that it is not healthy. Yes. 2 hours a night, that's way too much. A few hours a week is too much imo. I hate it though and think it's the work of the devil himself.

Dacadactyl · 09/01/2024 19:44

It's swings and roundabouts here. DS in year 7 and if I allowed it he'd be on it forever.

Some nights he's not allowed on it at all and other nights he might get 3 hours. Probably averages to 1.5 hours a day.

It depends on his behaviour.

RedRobyn2021 · 09/01/2024 19:46

To me it doesn't matter what other people do, you do right to restrict

Tbh 1.5 hours seems like a lot to me but my child is a lot younger.

Their lives would not be improved by more fortnight

saoirse31 · 09/01/2024 19:46

Yabu but, depending on your child.

Hard agree with this

Desecratedcoconut · 09/01/2024 19:47

Yeah, I think it's fine. I'd have loved these games as a pre-teen but was limited to a spectrum and it probably took 90minutes to load a game.

So long as the homework is done and they are spending some time being sociable outside of gaming, the difference between 90minutes and 2hrs is negligible.

Especially in winter when it's dark early and the weather is grotty.

AllIsWellish · 09/01/2024 19:50

Mine doesn't play fortnite but he's on Minecraft or roblox for longer than that a night

Y8 not 8 yr old

I think when the weather is grim & they are all chatting on head sets with mates most prob easily do two hours between 3.30 and 10pm
Not sure what else they'd do - mine do do sport etc 1-2 hrs a night and eat tea / homework and then .... but still 6+ hours to fill

Merryoldgoat · 09/01/2024 19:55

I don’t really limit screentime. I find my DS flits around - watches a video about Warhammer, goes off to do a drawing inspired by it, paint a model. Then play a game, watch video about said game etc.

Some days he barely touches screens. Some loads. None at bedtime and he sleeps no problem.

He and DH are currently watching something whilst painting miniature Warhammer things.

Naptrappedmummy · 09/01/2024 19:55

The amount of time kids are losing to all this is so depressing.

Tacocatgoatcheesepizza · 09/01/2024 19:57

DS12 is allowed 1.5hrs on weekdays and 3hrs at weekends. He’d play 24/7 if he could I think. He also complains that all his friends are allowed more….. I’m sure some of them are but I’m sure some of them aren’t as well!

Desecratedcoconut · 09/01/2024 19:57

They are playing games with headsets on playing and chatting with their friends...how you can consider that lost time or the work of the devil is very dramatic.

strawberryandtomato · 09/01/2024 19:58

Those of secondary aged children. Did they play often in primary. At the moment, my kids aren't allowed screens in the week but it seems like a huge jump from none at all to 2 hours a day 🙈 kids are 10 and 8

parietal · 09/01/2024 19:58

my kids have a long commute to school so by the time they get home there is homework, dinner, bath, bed. gaming only happens at weekends (in term time). in the holidays, however, they love to clock up hours everyday as I work.

strawberryandtomato · 09/01/2024 19:58

Also feel like I'm doing my
Kids a disservice as all their friends chat on Roblox during the week

Hard agree with this

Hard agree three - but it's also really hard to say no to a 13 year old who socialises with friends this way. It's a challenging time.

I have a 13 year old. We have no screen time limits so occasionally he will spend most of a day gaming or a solid few hours after school. However, he doesn't actually have that much time after school. He has activities three days a week after school so doesn't get home until gone 5 on those days. He has home work to do. He goes up to his room at 8.30 and can read until 9.30. He probably plays on his PS4 for an hour a couple of evenings a week and occasionally for an afternoon on the weekend.
