To think there's too much left wing dissonance

LefthandRight · 31/12/2023 00:19

Feminist but support women hating philosophies and cultures
LGBT friendly except for the L part
Want to make minorities feel safe except for the Jewish community
Believe in the NHS but go private when needed
Think we should continue atoning for colonialism but mention Germany and WW2 and its like....move on already
Hate unearned privilege but it's handy I'll be left a property
Applaud multiculturalism but seek out monoculturalism in my holidays
Avoid palm oil as it kills trees but I must have a Christmas tree
Eat vegan because factory farming is disgusting....except the stuff that goes into my rescue cat food
Believe women shouldn't kneel to the standards and demands of the patriarchy, but I still remove my body hair, its my choice after all

I agree. I've been pretty shocked at the dismissing of Israeli women's trauma over the last few weeks.

NotTerfNorCis · 31/12/2023 00:27

I think everyone is ultimately after what they see as their best interests, even though most of us are blind to it. That's why people stereotypically shift from left to right as they get older. They're more invested in the status quo and also maybe confident in their ability to get on without state support.

MojoMoon · 31/12/2023 00:42

NEWSFLASH: people are quite complex and sometimes hold a range of beliefs that can't be neatly categorised into one group

What about right wing dissonance?
Love Britain and democracy but accept fully paid trips to Moscow from Russian spies (Matthew Elliott, or rather Lord Elliott after Liz Truss' resignation dishonour list.)
Love Britain and democracy but accept large donations from the wife of former Putin Minister (Vladimir Chernukhin) and in total accept 1.93million from. Russian linked individuals
Love free speech but spend millions vindictively pursuing a journalist (Arron Banks)
Believe in "law and order" but be reluctant to remove whip from MPs that have groped people (Chris Pincher and Boris Johnson)
Believe in " traditional British fair play" but avoid paying taxes (Nadim Zahawi)

Grimpo · 31/12/2023 00:47

Who are you talking about exactly? Is this supposed to be everyone who expresses any view to the left of centre, or what?

PurpleChrayne · 31/12/2023 00:49

100%.

I've been abandoned by my leftie pals due to my gender criticality and my Judaism.

VanityDiesHard · 31/12/2023 00:50

I don't agree with all of this (I'm not gender critical and believe that TWAW) but goddamit I agree about Israel. I am shocked by the left's response to 10/7.

Theresit · 31/12/2023 00:55

The left tries to be all inclusive of everyone , not realising that the groups they try to include actually dislike the ideologies of each other...

Allthatwegotisthispalebluedot · 31/12/2023 01:07

Not all of these opinions are ‘dissonance’ though, are they? I’m a vegetarian but my (rescue) cat is an obligate carnivore. I have to buy her meat or she will die. Of course there’s the argument that cats shouldn’t be pets, but she exists and needed someone to care for her. I do remove my body hair a lot of the time because I prefer my skin to be hair free - but I don’t think I - or anyone else - should dictate what do you with your leg hair. It’s even possible to condemn Hamas and 7/10 and also believe that innocent Palestinians shouldn’t have the shit bombed out of them in retaliation. It’s possible to think further than your own nose, OP! The world can be more complex than it might seem at first glance.

Prayfortheangels · 31/12/2023 01:17

Every human that ever lived lived with dissonance. Our brains are not streamlined number crunching machines.

PrinnyPree · 31/12/2023 01:39

I think the palm oil thing was more about the fact the trees are orangutan habitats. I think farm grown xmas trees are a bit different to ancient jungle being burned/cleared for palm oil farms.

I don't agree with your other points either but others have already replied.

Thementalloadisreal · 31/12/2023 01:40

Some of that is just the result of having certain opinions / morals / ethics whilst still having to live in the society in which we live, as it is.

DontLeanOnTheKeyboard · 31/12/2023 01:47

Lazy post op, nothing is as linear as you propose and we’re all shades of everything. IDGAF on your religion, race, sexual preference, gender, age….choice of takeaway. Just don’t be a twat and don’t kill people.

Latewinter · 31/12/2023 01:50

Don't get what you're going on about re palm trees and Christmas trees, they're unrelated, unethical palm oil farming destroys forest habitat. Did you think they were trying to save the palm trees Grin

As a vegan I am against keeping cats but wtf does party politics have to do with being vegan or having cats.

The inside of your head must be positively stuffed with straw men.

NoBinturongsHereMate · 31/12/2023 01:54

A lot of these - xmas trees, monocultural holidays, body hair removal - are not left wing (or right wing) positions.

TooBigForMyBoots · 31/12/2023 01:58

Are you struggling with dissonance @LefthandRight?Brew

Islandermummy · 31/12/2023 02:01

Awwww guilty as charged... you just described me! (Except I'm horrified by the current swell in antisemitism)

Thing is, most humans are hypocritical in some ways. Rarely are people completely consistent and logical

dingledells · 31/12/2023 02:02

You missed,

despise private schools but will spend £££ to live in catchment of excellent state, or find God or tutor like hell for grammar & if those don’t work out will have no choice but to go private.

DojaPhat · 31/12/2023 02:02

The crazy thing is you probably think yourself able to see through all 'the bullshit and hypocrisy'. The mind truly boggles.

Saschka · 31/12/2023 02:07

Is this one specific person you are pissed off with OP?

This list is strangely over-specific if not. You surely cannot think that every single left wing person in the world likes monocultural holidays and removing their own body hair?

TooBigForMyBoots · 31/12/2023 02:12

I know leftwing lesbians, they're very friendly with the L part of LGBT groups.Grin

Watervolt · 31/12/2023 02:14

You aren't wrong with a lot of this. But the vegan one is a bit niche - a bigger point is the fact that so many proud lefties are hypocrites about environmental and animal rights issues, scoffing the flesh of every kind of creature on our planet for their own pleasure. A lot are too cowardly to commit to veganism in the first place.

Watervolt · 31/12/2023 02:16

VanityDiesHard · 31/12/2023 00:50

Edited

Could you explain why TWAW?

NoMoreFalafelsForYou · 31/12/2023 02:16

@DontLeanOnTheKeyboard

*Lazy post op, nothing is as linear as you propose and we’re all shades of everything. IDGAF on your religion, race, sexual preference, gender, age….choice of takeaway. Just don’t be a twat and don’t kill people."

Yeah, I agree with this

NoMoreFalafelsForYou · 31/12/2023 02:21

Cowardly? Ridiculous position. I'm not vegan but know people who are, close family members too - surely you do as much as you can if you are one as you don't believe in killing animals? Nobody's perfect and they'd be of the mind that any reduction in suffering or consumption is good
WTF this has to do with being "left" is anyone's guess lol.
All vegans are left wing now, OP?

BethDuttonsTwin · 31/12/2023 02:23

Indeed OP. So many luxury beliefs held by “lefties” who are actually just the middle and upper middle classes who sneer at the working classes and poor, who cannot afford to go along with the nonsense, but the middle classes genuinely believe they’re good and righteous people. MN is jammed to the rafters with such types.
