Of 745,000 people a year isn’t what the 17 million people who voted for Brexit in 2016 thought they were voting for?

YABU = Yes, this is what Leave supporters voted for.

YANBI = No, they didn’t vote for this.

And what percentage of those are the illegal immigrants vs people with skill sets that there's a shortage of? And how many of the Brexiteers have those skill sets and are looking for work?

CranfordScones · 23/11/2023 13:30

It wasn't a vote to 'leave' Immigration.

It was a vote to leave the EU.

This is legal migration. There is no illegal migration, much as the politician repeating the phrase would like you to think there is.

And this is exactly what Brexshiteers voted for, although I suspect that they thought it wasn't. This was an inevitable result of Brexit...

Elastica23 · 23/11/2023 13:32

I think most of them thought we were leaving Europe - sailing out into the middle of the Atlantic, perhaps.

There was definitely a lot of talk about controlling borders. Perhaps they thought we could just build a fence.

Fififafa · 23/11/2023 13:33

It’s hilarious that despite Brexit, we have seen the largest ever level of net migration.

CheatingCheetos · 23/11/2023 13:33

Citing the figure alone tells us absolutely nothing.

Who are the people who come here? Where are they from? What jobs do they do? Are they permanent or temporary - what’s their actual status? Where do they live / settle? Who are the people leaving the UK? Where are they going? What skills / jobs do they have? Are they going permanently or temporarily? And so on.

There is a kind of poetic justice to it!

Hiddenmnetter · 23/11/2023 13:35

Tbf the UK birth rate is far below replacement. Migration either way isn’t a question. Negative population growth has disastrous consequences for a society, especially in an ageing society. Watch China in 20 years…

None of that matters.

It's 745,000 people.

It's nearly the equivalent of a city the size of Leeds being added to the UK population each and every single year FFS. It's totally and utterly unsustainable, even if the people are all nice (and I'm sure they aren't ALL nice). The UK can't even house and provide essential services to the people we have here already.

Quibbling about that is like seeing someone's house is flooded and asking whether it's drinking water or sewer water.

It’s hilarious that despite Brexit, we have seen the largest ever level of net migration.

Oh yeah a right bloody side splitter. What a peach you are.

Rummikub · 23/11/2023 13:36

Won’t these numbers include student visa holders, Hong Kong residents.

BadPennyReturns · 23/11/2023 13:37

Has anyone seen what's happening in The Netherlands? They are so peed off with immigration at the moment - Nexit next?

unlimiteddilutingjuice · 23/11/2023 13:38

It's not what they thought they were voting for.
But it's the natural outcome of France not helping us secure our borders anymore.

No, the Dutch are far to smart.

Rummikub · 23/11/2023 13:41

Is this the guy with the hair?

Kendodd · 23/11/2023 13:42

Nothing delights me more that seeing red faced Leave voting racists reactions to these numbers Grin

Fleetheart · 23/11/2023 13:42

I don’t think it is what the Brexit people voted for. I also don’t think they really knew what they were voting for. Brexit was never going to stop the migration from the rest of the world was it?

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 23/11/2023 13:43

Kendodd · 23/11/2023 13:40

They have just voted the far right guy in. How smart is that?

oakleaffy · 23/11/2023 13:43

Brexit voters from what I gather were sold the lie of “ Taking back control of our borders “ and money saved to be spent on NHS.

Sadly people fell for these monstrous lies.

We should never have left EU.

Rummikub · 23/11/2023 13:45

No we shouldn’t have left.

Fleetheart · 23/11/2023 13:47

this government really is incompetent isn’t it . this is all legal migration so nothing to do with boats. and they’re not controlling it at all- so we don’t have schools doctors etc etc. they need to make sure that our infrastructure matches our numbers

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 23/11/2023 13:47

Much of the numbers today would have come anyway, Brexit or no
Brexit. There are many people from Hong Kong, Ukraine, Afghanistan. The situation there has nothing to do with Brexit. Also students.

Surprise

(Not really)

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 23/11/2023 13:49

Well quite, we have this numbers coming in, yet we still moan that we don’t have enough nurses and doctors and look wistfully at the boats, convinced that’s where the carers and HCP will come from.

By far the biggest groups in that number are Students (without whom UK universities would be in even more financial trouble than they already are) and health care workers - hardly the sort of people I imagine the average Brexit voter is frothing over.
