Of 745,000 people a year isn’t what the 17 million people who voted for Brexit in 2016 thought they were voting for?

YABU = Yes, this is what Leave supporters voted for.

YANBI = No, they didn’t vote for this.

Gritty south east London with no social
issues…. Hmmmmm. Greenwich? Blackheath? I doubt it’s Slade Green or Erith

youngones1 · 23/11/2023 18:31

A lot of them wanted foreigners to stop taking their jobs...

Xenia · 23/11/2023 18:32

High immigration has meant wages have stayed low and we have little housing and 7m on NHS waiting lists.
High immigration for North London Tory and Labour politicians means they can get cleaners and other servants easily therefore they only see positive effects.

Jasmin1971 · 23/11/2023 18:35

In talk about migration pressure; We have not seen anything yet. Climate change will cause mass migration on a scale nobody has yet seen. I do worry for people, I really do!

It's not what they thought they were voting for.
But it's the natural outcome of France not helping us secure our borders anymore.

From the BBC: 15 Nov 2023
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-53699511

"As of 13 November, 27,284 people had crossed the English Channel in 2023. In 2022, 45,755 migrants made the crossing, the highest number since figures began to be collected in 2018. In total, more than 100,000 people have come to the UK this way since 2018."

The number of people coming across the Channel is substantial but it's nowhere near 745,000

I agree we would need to understand this number more to have an opinion on it.

I voted for Brexit, but contrary to your assumptions I expect, if the number is so high because people were invited for refuge from war in Ukraine (or anywhere) or left Hong Kong at our invitation I have no issue at all.

What we can't accommodate is everyone on Earth who believes Britain would give them a better life. Despite remainers banging on about how shit Britain is an awful lot of people from around the world believe living here would give them a better life.

Migrants in a dinghy sail in the Channel toward the south coast of England

How many people cross the Channel in small boats and how many claim asylum in the UK?

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak says that "stopping the boats" coming to the UK is a key priority.

Mycatsgoldtooth · 23/11/2023 18:37

@youngones1 and what is wrong with settled people in a country wanting decent wages and work? If people from Zimbabwe were upset about migrants from South Africa putting strain on their economy and civic resources would you think this was out of order, or is it only people in the U.K. you think shouldn’t expect a living in the country they are settled in?

Fififafa · 23/11/2023 13:51

I can see why you’re throwing your toys out of the pram when you realise that all Brexit has done is replace mainly white(EU) migrants with mainly brown(Non-EU migrants).
The vast majority of immigration was from non-EU countries , 968,000 with the largest groups being from India and Nigeria.

I voted for Brexit and I have no interest in thr colour of someone's skin.
I have an interest in our immigration being regulated.
I expect a fair few of the people coming from India or Nigeria are working in our NHS and care services and I'm grateful for their service to our country.

Deathwillbebutapause · 23/11/2023 18:54

Indeed. It seems to be the Remain voters on this thread who are weirdly fixated on race and how brown people might be, as "fififafa" rather crassly measures and defines the world.

Not only are you being unreasonable, but you are also being as stupid as all those other people who voted for Brexit to protest immigration. Because immigration was NEVER on the ballot! Free movement and immigration are entirely different things. The Treaty of Rome enabled free movement. Brexit also enabled "free movement" - mostly of low paid and hard working people who filled the crappy low paid jobs that British born workers didn't want (and still don't want) back to European countries, and caused the current labour shortage in so many of our industries.

If you want to discuss immigration then you'll need to find a vote on that subject. There wasn't one in 2016.

Edited

"crappy low paid jobs"
Because people willing to come and live in crap conditions for low wages was plentiful.

You are advocating exploiting people willing to do this? Because the other side of that coin which people often state is that full time eork should pay enough to house and feed you adequately.

You shouldn't have to live in a caravan and work with no toilets to pick fruit for example and consumers (of agricultural produce/care/hospitality) should expect to oay enough to give someone suitable recommence for the job.

Remainers happy to admit they want cheap labour to exploit?

MummytoAAandX · 23/11/2023 19:52

It was a vote to leave the EU, not to stop immigration...most of which is keeping our infrastructure going

CaptainJackSparrow85 · 23/11/2023 19:56

The Brexit voters were told a lie about uncontrolled borders being the fault of the EU, when it was always within the government's gift to control. Now that all the Europeans have gone home we have such severe shortages of staff that we have to import people from overseas. Turns out immigration wasn't the reason Brexiteers grandchildren couldn't get jobs after all. This has nothing to do with the boats or asylum seekers. It's people legally here on visas given to them by the Home Office. If they wanted to, the government could have changed the rules any time they wanted. Including before Brexit as the people coming are non EU citizens. Particularly with an 80 seat majority.

This is the long and the short of it. The increased migration isn’t entirely a consequence of Brexit, but anyone who believed the Tories when they said the EU was the reason they couldn’t reduce immigration was a gullible fool.

The Tories love immigration, as much as they pretend not to. For starters it keeps house prices and rental prices high. They get fat off a swelling population.

You’ll probably find it increasingly hard to live somewhere that isn’t dealing with migration pressures and associated pressures

There's rioting in Dublin tonight as I write this. It is very scary.

Clavinova · 23/11/2023 20:07

this is all legal migration so nothing to do with boats

The ONS figures include asylum seekers;

we have improved our methods – most notably the inclusion of asylum seekers

Has anyone mentioned yet that 6 million people applied to the EU settlement scheme? Where did they all spring from?

NHS saw a rise of about 50,000 employees in 2022. Which is far short of 750,000.

So do you feel you got what you wanted?
Has Brexit enabled migration to be adequately regulated?

HannibalHeyes · 23/11/2023 20:17

Asylum seekers are not illegal, no matter how much Tory politicians want you to think they are.

I would imagine the "6 million" were already living here...

France is helping to secure our borders because we've been paying them to do so for many years - we have bilateral agreements with France irrespective of EU membership;

Perhaps they weren't very good with numbers?

A bit like Brexshiteers...

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 23/11/2023 20:42

I don’t really understand how immigrants are to “blame” for undercutting labour costs and therefore taking all the low pay jobs.

Because any government or employer could easily prevent that by setting and paying everyone a decent wage. If immigrants are being paid less, that’s our own damn fault for paying them less. Pay them the same as a local and let everyone compete on skills and productivity instead.

Whilst the wealth divide grows across the world, so will migration in all its forms. Thus it ever was.

Trying to stop it is like trying to stop high tide. You can’t. It’s all part of human evolution.

Lotyt · 23/11/2023 21:08

It’s a complete joke. The country is a mess and yet people still vote for these idiots.

BouncingJAS · 23/11/2023 21:09

Its very gratifying to watch the Brexiters get poorer and poorer due to the Brexit they voted for.

Keep it coming.
