To think that net immigration…

Of 745,000 people a year isn’t what the 17 million people who voted for Brexit in 2016 thought they were voting for?

YABU = Yes, this is what Leave supporters voted for.

YANBI = No, they didn’t vote for this.

Not goady, genuine question: what do you mean there’s no illegal migration?

If someone enters the country on a fake visa in order to go and work, that’s illegal, for example.

Or comes illegally into the country on a small boat from France.

User18650674 · 23/11/2023 15:23

They come from everywhere, how is that Brexit, that was the EU

Rummikub · 23/11/2023 15:29

As a result of brexit the U.K. wanted to negotiate trade deals with the rest of the world. And that comes at a trade off. Eg trade with NZ means opening doors to more NZ lamb

Trade deal with India meant an increase in visas granted.

Trade deal with the US? Everything is on the table!

It’s hilarious that so many Brexiters believed that leaving the EU would mean the UK suddenly no longer has positive net immigration. Clueless.

I didn't vote for Brexit, but I thought it would lower migration if it happened. Because people wouldn't be able to move here so easily from (other) EU countries.

Happy to be educated on why this is not the case!

Rummikub · 23/11/2023 15:33

Because the U.K. had to develop new links globally which includes movement of products and people from those countries

Naptrappedmummy · 23/11/2023 15:33

My mother in law is absolutely enraging when it comes to Brexit and politics in general. She has been practically smoking the daily Mail for 30 years and believes all manner of urban myths and downright lies about immigrants, how the country runs, civil servants and so on. When I told her immigration was higher than ever she said oh that’s just because labour and the lefties block anything the tories try to do. I pointed out the tories have a majority so labour can’t block anything if they’re united. She insists they can. Ho hum

MassageForLife · 23/11/2023 15:38

Of course this is what they voted for. They wanted fewer people coming in from the EU. They got that.

The fact that they didn't pay attention to the implications of that isn't anyone else's fault.

Disorderla · 23/11/2023 15:40

I’m a bit concerned about this actually, and certainly not crowing about it. Those sort of attitudes are exactly what lost us the referendum.

The changes in the immigration policy mean that most of this number will not be net contributors. And there is no way that our infrastructure could keep up with this demand.

The fight for resources is already happening in poorer areas. This is only going to raise tensions further, and I’m genuinely concerned it could lead to the rise of a party based on ‘stopping immigration’ that will make the tories seem like pussy cats.

Bobbotgegrinch · 23/11/2023 15:40

But it's exactly what Brexit voters voted for, for the the UK to be in charge of how many people should be let into the country. Shame that they handed the reins over to such a bunch of incompetent numptys really.

Do you always talk about your family with such nastiness

Not the case at all.

We've not got new FTA with India, Zimbabwe, Nepal or Nigeria, simple fact is we need workers in agri, construction, health etc etc.

We can't get them EU anymore, so we get them from many other countries, trouble is, in order to attract them into very low paid work (but high living costs) we have said "You can bring in your entire family too"

As said incompetence.

Kitanai · 23/11/2023 15:47

People are forgetting how much influence Nigel Farage and his ilk gained due to people disliking immigration and feeling pushed out of their own country. This is only going to get worse.

Keep sneering at people who have concerns…that worked out SO well for us all last time 🙄

I’ve personally seen more people leaning to the right when it comes to immigration as the years have passed (and that’s what they say infront of me as an immigrant!)

Why did we end up with the referendum in the first place?

He seems to be gearing up for another go at it now.

I’d prefer we all stop back biting and have a sensible conversation about immigration. With facts and keeping bigotry and emotion out of it, by keeping the discussion open.

billysboy · 23/11/2023 16:00

The boats arriving everyday are too easy for the media to highlight and easy fodder for the brexiteers

They wont stop that avenue until govt get an agreement with france to take back to France , more likely to have a Woman on the moon than that happening

Farage should be in jail.

We got a referendum because he stirred the pot, i believe in 2012, EU/Migration didn't even figure in the publics top 10 concerns and Ukip never got an MP elected in a GE and in % terms were about on par with the Greens, Farage lost his deposit 5 times, Ukips influence was unfortunately magnified by the right wing of the Tory party.

David Cameron was an idiot to have agreed to a vote, he was strongly advised not too.

Are we drifting to the right? Polling shows we are fed up with the Tories and want a Labour Govt.

We need a Govt that will limit visas to the worker or student only, as happens if you want to work in Australia.

Mycatsgoldtooth · 23/11/2023 16:04

How much is too much? No one will ever answer this on mumsnet. This is clearly ridiculous amounts of people. Many of whom are unskilled and will not be net contributors, far from it. The Ponzi scheme of inflated population is having a huge toll on social cohesion, housing, sewage and the health service. No one in here will for one second admit and just say ‘fund the nhs and build on every bit of green belt to increase housing for people from abroad’

spillyo · 23/11/2023 16:04

simple fact is we need workers in agri, construction, health etc etc.

Re skilled workers: we're a rich country with means to train and pay people properly, and we're hoovering them up from poorer countries, depleting their public services and economies.

TodayInahurry · 23/11/2023 16:10

This is far too many people, housing, hospitals, schools etc.

The people were ignored in The Netherlands and see what happened, they have voted for a far ight government. Which will be the case in Germany and France soon.

Yes this is likely

It’s hilarious that despite Brexit, we have seen the largest ever level of net migration.

Looking on the bright side though, at least you can tell they're foreigners just by looking at them. Not like those sneaky Poles.

Sourisblanche · 23/11/2023 16:14

Yes but this huge increase in immigration has happened AFTER Brexit. So the U.K. leaving the EU has not solved the UK’s immigration problem. This is not lost on EU countries who are also having immigration issues.

What happened in NL is bad but Wilders got 37 seats out of 150 so will have to form a coalition which will limit what he can do.

Darker · 23/11/2023 16:14

The number of deaths registered in 2022 in England and Wales was 577,160. with austerity measures and climate change etc life expectancy is going down.

Thing is, people move around the world. They always have done. If we want people to stop people gravitating here we need to improve conditions elsewhere. It works both ways… If we want to hang on to our doctors we need to up our game here.

mumda · 23/11/2023 16:16

@ImNunTheWiser

Do students benefits areas?
They certainly push up house prices as demands on housing rise. They push up demand on local services. They also seriously damage local facilities like shops and pubs too - in terms of being there term time.

I'd say the vast numbers of students damage the UK massively - in terms of damage to areas and damage to the reality of what jobs are available to young people. 50% graduates, when many jobs available do not require a degree and never will.

Mycatsgoldtooth · 23/11/2023 16:17

Look at the figures from 1947 onwards and tell me this will have no effect on the stability and well being of social cohesion and attitudes of the settled population already living here. Massive demographic change at high speed is never a good thing for a nation. It lowers social trust, lowers support for welfare, lowers charitable giving and it’s not like we’ve seen fantastic Economic growth due to these changes. If you have children who you hope in the future can access a welfare state and affordable housing and you are cheering on near a million people a year entering the U.K. then I don’t know what to say. You are not doing them any favours.

To think that net immigration…
Mycatsgoldtooth · 23/11/2023 16:18

@Darker so you are in favour of the colonialism of taking doctors from poor countries then?

Edited

We do not have the people hanging about doing nothing, to fill these roles.

Totally agree on de skilling other nations, its criminal, the UN has banned taking HCP s from Nepal and Zimbabwe but still the UK does it, even India has predicted nursing shortage.

We need changes in how we work, so we can improve productivity and get people retrained in areas where we are short.

Wilders and the AfD have relatively little support, AfD aprox 15% in Braveria, 25% in the old East Germany, Wilders got around 25% of the vote too.
