This happened a few years ago when we lived in a remote area.
My child name was very uncommon and unique. I deliberately picked the name because it wasn't common and I didn't want her to share her name with a number of people. I don't want to say what it is because there are very few people in the world with it. As she got older, in assembly, she found out that someone in primary 1 had the same name as her and the parent had obviously heard of and copied her name. Subsequently, there were a number of others with the same name.

You don't know they knew the name from you/your child. It might just be growing in popularity. It's not owned by you either way.

Of course you're being unreasonable, you have no idea if they actually copied you or if they heard it elsewhere and liked it. And even if they did copy you, so what? You don't own a name just because you chose it first.

I never understand the angst about names on MN. Nobody owns a name and anyone can use any name they like.

Within reason because some names are just stupid and not chosen with a future adult in mind.

YABU. DS has a fairly unusual name - he is one of 27 born in the same year. But there was another boy in his primary school with an equally unusual variant spelling if the same name, and it had been on the shortlist of names for one of the children in DS's toddler group.

You don't own exclusive rights to a name, and it's not a huge surprise that people who fit a similar enough demographic to have children at the same school might have similar taste in names.
