bothered that another parent copied my childs name

This happened a few years ago when we lived in a remote area.
My child name was very uncommon and unique. I deliberately picked the name because it wasn't common and I didn't want her to share her name with a number of people. I don't want to say what it is because there are very few people in the world with it. As she got older, in assembly, she found out that someone in primary 1 had the same name as her and the parent had obviously heard of and copied her name. Subsequently, there were a number of others with the same name.
AIBU to be annoyed?

My 28 yr old Archie Frederick likes to muse over how his name was laughed at in school but he's now lost track of how many Archie's have been christened in his church.
Don't stress over this, you have no control.

MargotBamborough · 22/11/2023 17:18

You're being absolutely ridiculous.

Did she hear your kid's name when she started school and rename hers or what? Or did she bug your house when you were pregnant, overhear you decide on the name and then decide to call her own unborn kid the same name?

Seriously - how did this name theft occur?

It was a small place where everyone knew everyone, the parent knew of my DDs name and when she eventually had her own child she took it

Wooptie fucking ping. 🤷🏻‍♀️

This, with bells on.

there are very few people in the world with it

And you know exactly how many people globally have your child's name how exactly?

You don't own a name. Maybe you should have done a Kardashian and tried to trademark it? Maybe next time Hmm

PuttingDownRoots · 22/11/2023 17:20

Two of my friends (who don't know each other) chose the same name for their daughters thinking it was rare.

The name was... Amelia. A very nice name, but the No.1 girls name at the time definitely not rare!

She took it? Really? 😂

QueenCamilla · 22/11/2023 17:20

Do you live in a rough area? It's definitely to do with that.

craigth162 · 22/11/2023 17:21

Yep- when you have nextchild remember to copyright the name

Z1hun · 22/11/2023 17:21

Toottooot · 22/11/2023 17:14

Did ye trademark it min?

My thoughts exactly 🤣🤣

καλοκαλoκαιρι · 22/11/2023 17:21

this is hilarious!
when i was born (to an incredibly hippy father) i didn't know anyone with my name. By the time my brother was in reception class 5 years later there were multiple kids with my name, these days it’s pretty much shorthand for ‘I am a massive Tory tw@t’ which is unfortunate, but what else are you gonna do but laugh? cop on to urself Op x

She didn't take it, for it never belonged to you.

Yabu.

InTheRainOnATrain · 22/11/2023 17:22

You obviously found the name somewhere, chances are so did the other mum. It reminds me of the baby group I went to with DD, 5 years ago now, where two thirds of the class were called Quinn 🤣

CurlewKate · 22/11/2023 17:17

I chose an incredibly uncommon name for my dd 25 years ago. Grace.

Indeed, my DS is called a name that was quite rare when he was born but is now in the top ten. So nobody at school shares his name but it'll be a different story at work 😁. A friend of mine called her DD Elsa. The following year, Frozen was released.....

IncompleteSenten · 22/11/2023 17:23

Your mistake was not registering it as a trademark.

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 22/11/2023 17:23

She didn't 'take' the name though, did it? It's just a name. I know three people (who also know eachother) who called their kid Josh. Is that allowed though because it's more of a normal name?

Egypt-Sian?

You beat me to it👏👏👏

Hibernatalie · 22/11/2023 17:24

Where did you hear, I mean steal, the name from?

LambriniBobinIsleworth · 22/11/2023 17:24

Our eldest has a fairly unusual name for this time and the culture we live in. She's named for a relation of mine in a different religion who meant a lot to one of my parents. I'd only ever met this elderly lady with the name prior to calling my daughter it. A year later, a lady my husband and I worked with no connections to the faith the name comes from named her kid it. I was never sure it was inspired by our daughter, but I highly suspect it was. I am glad to have spread the knowledge and love of a truly beautiful name out there. Good luck to them. You should try and think of it this way too.

Toottooot · 22/11/2023 17:24

We really need to ken fit this name is - tell us min.

Petercrouchslegs · 22/11/2023 17:25

You were not the only one trying to be unique. Everybody else was at it too.

15PiecesOfFlair · 22/11/2023 17:25

I didn't want her to share her name with a number of people.

Did you realise at the time you had no control over this, or are you only just realising now? Wink

ButtonSister · 22/11/2023 17:26

Uncommon and unique? Can't be both.

MrsSchrute · 22/11/2023 17:26

You do know that your DC sharing a name with another human doesn't make them less unique or special?
I never understand this weird desire for unique names!!

If it was apparently such small place where everyone knew everyone how did you not find out that the other child had the same name until she started school at age 4/5 years?
