bothered that another parent copied my childs name

This happened a few years ago when we lived in a remote area.
My child name was very uncommon and unique. I deliberately picked the name because it wasn't common and I didn't want her to share her name with a number of people. I don't want to say what it is because there are very few people in the world with it. As she got older, in assembly, she found out that someone in primary 1 had the same name as her and the parent had obviously heard of and copied her name. Subsequently, there were a number of others with the same name.
AIBU to be annoyed?

I'm outraged that my daughter is no longer the only Sabrina in her school. Another child with the same name has joined the school...I wrote a strongly worded letter to the Chair of Governors about it.

Nobody owns any name, you can’t lay claim to it just because you didn’t know anyone else who had chosen it at the time.

Anyway, names come in and out of fashion. 15 years ago there were absolutely no Florences, Ivys, Matildas or Ottilies and now there’s 5 of each in every primary school. A name can feel very unique and unusual one year and then purely by coincidence be everywhere within a few years.

Tamrastarr · 22/11/2023 17:50

@καλοκαλoκαιρι Are you named after a country??

RedToothBrush · 22/11/2023 17:51

This is what happens when you don't trademark your child's name.

How foolish of you.

@καλοκαλoκαιρι Are you named after a country??

That's Greek for good good weather or Good summer... the Greek word for summer means Good Weather.

Floppyelf · 22/11/2023 17:52

You lot berate her all you want. I just need to know the name now. #Nosiness over sarcasm!

titbumwillypoo · 22/11/2023 17:53

I was nearly shaking and crying when I saw there was a Aiden, Bayden, Caidun, Eyduan, Kayden, Hayden, Neydune and Zayden in my sons class. Thankfully we called him Xayden (Pronounced Kess-ei-dien) so he has a yoonique name that is nothing like the lower class members of our community.

CruCru · 22/11/2023 17:53

I used to know sets of parents who had a child called Atticus. I once introduced them and they were sort of funny about it.

Calliopespa · 22/11/2023 17:54

It’s mildly annoying, and a bit nagg on their part, but I’d say move on. Slightly surprised you would be posting about it several years on, especially as you seem to have moved. Didn’t read entire thread so may well not be first to haul out the old “ imitation is the sincerest form of flattery” phrase. Try to not dwell on it. And apologies I didn’t read the thread but I think it’s fairly classed as a minor bother.

Calliopespa · 22/11/2023 17:54

Sorry “naff” on their part

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 22/11/2023 17:54

Wow, what a bunch of screeching haridans some of you lot are. She only asked a simple question, ffs, 🤣

topnoddy · 22/11/2023 17:56

Oh gawd not again !

My child has a you kneeque name blah blah bloody blah

What's it called then ?

something like

Ghhghysbyjasjhhhisha

CheeseCakeSunflowers · 22/11/2023 17:56

Isn't this what 99.99% of parents do. It would be a bit odd if everyone with a child named James or Mary had come up with the name from their own imagination rather than from hearing the names prior to having their own child.

mommatoone · 22/11/2023 17:57

This has to be a wind up.

Fraca · 22/11/2023 17:58

If you have another baby, don't give it a name. Problem solved :)

I knew a Matilda and a Florence 26 years ago! And an Ivy but that was a middle name.

I chose an incredibly uncommon name for my dd 25 years ago. Grace.

It's was 54th most popular in the US in 1998.

Mari9999 · 22/11/2023 18:01

@catphone
And how has your daughter's life been negatively impacted by this?

Trommelgeroffel · 22/11/2023 18:01

My DC are in their early 20s and we know a billion Matildas and Florences.

The op is a bit over the top but that's a shitty comment.

TBF a parent that put this level of importance on their kid being special and unique is likely horrifically overbearing.

Mary28 · 22/11/2023 18:05

If it was a nice name and you didn't want anyone to copy it you probably should have kept it a secret.

smilesup · 22/11/2023 18:05

When I was pregnant with DS1(18) I thought I had come across an unusual name. Mentioned it to DH who had never met anyone called it.
That name is Evie, fucking everywhere now.
