bothered that another parent copied my childs name

This happened a few years ago when we lived in a remote area.
My child name was very uncommon and unique. I deliberately picked the name because it wasn't common and I didn't want her to share her name with a number of people. I don't want to say what it is because there are very few people in the world with it. As she got older, in assembly, she found out that someone in primary 1 had the same name as her and the parent had obviously heard of and copied her name. Subsequently, there were a number of others with the same name.
AIBU to be annoyed?

Surname Gunn ?

Petallove · 22/11/2023 18:06

I gave my child a common name -only one in the primary school. Names depend on area and no I don’t think you can be annoyed or that they copied you.

Sunday12 · 22/11/2023 18:06

I chose a name for my son that I’d never heard of before. No one in my family could understand that I’d chosen it because it wasn’t familiar as a name. He was the only one with the name at school etc etc. some years later and the name was so popular in our area (and probably lots of other areas). I always said I started the fashion- but I didn’t really. It’s just how things go. I’m proud that I was ahead of the game. It’s now a very normal and oft used name. Still beautiful

I know a 22yo Matilda.

I chose a name that I thought was pretty unique. I only ever saw it on one baby name site out of the hundreds I looked at.
I'd never heard that name before but now it's such a popular name in the cultural circles I'm in.
So annoying. Especially when I drove past a business with that name too.

What is the name? Wickes, Tesco, Spar, Tata Steel? If it's one of those I can definitely see why it caught on 😀

aintnospringchicken · 22/11/2023 18:06

Of course YABVU.
Nobody "owns" a name.
Parents are entitled to name their precious child whatever they like.

Waitingfordoggo · 22/11/2023 18:06

Looking on the bright side, I suppose if she ‘took’ your child’s name, your child now doesn’t have a name so you can give her a different one. You’ve got another opportunity to be unique. 🤷🏼‍♀️

CeciliaMars · 22/11/2023 18:07

My mum gave me a name in the late 70s that she thought was really uncommon. There was then about 4 of us in every class!

GrannyRose15 · 22/11/2023 18:09

This happens all the time. I chose an unusual name for my daughter only to discover at least two girls with the same name in her school. And similarly with my grandsons. They both have unusual names that are now becoming very popular. There is a name for the process but I can’t remember what it is.

Mycatmax · 22/11/2023 18:09

As someone with a rare name that is frequently misspelled and occasionally mispronounced, I would have been thrilled if others had stolen the name from my mother!!! Unfortunately, I can't see to give it away.

Yet another massive injustice in the world!!! I feel your pain 😆

BeeDavis · 22/11/2023 18:13

How do you think names come about in the first place 😂😂🥴🥴 we’d all have unique names if we didn’t copy names from elsewhere. How fucking old are you 😂

That’s just rude. Not remotely funny. She asked a question. I can’t see why that would elicit that response.

MustBeNapTime · 22/11/2023 18:13

@catphone
If you share what the name is, I'm sure Mnetters will be able to reassure you that there are plenty of people they know with your childs name, so it's quite possible they heard of it elsewhere.

Hee he, this pissed me off 23yrs ago. I called my boy Caleb. Didn't know of anyone called this. He was at nursery with another wee boy and his mum had a baby and called him Caleb, I was outraged at the time, like I owned the name! Now it's just, nearly as common as Jayden, Jaxon and Chelcee, 😆

You know it was in the Bible so I doubt your son was the only one with the name even if it wasn't common 23 years ago?

Fundays12 · 22/11/2023 18:15

It sounds like it wasn't that unique to begin with. They may have picked the name years before your child was even born. Me and DH had always said if we had a boy we would like to call him a certain name. We have a son with that name. If you can find a name online or in a name book you are going to find other people use it.

no lol, why, dont say u no another Kiley-Rae. 😤😧🤯 xxx

Womencanlift · 22/11/2023 18:16

My sister has an unusual name, well unusual spelling of an already unusual name. You know how she got it? One of my friends from school had that name and my mum thought oh that’s nice

Friends mum laughed about it and actually would give my sister personalised gifts as she knew that we would never go to a gift shop and find a pen or keyring with her name on it.

So on the odd occasion that she found something with her daughters name on it she would pick one up for my sister too, and vice versa

Very precious to be upset like this OP

So did you copy the American wrestler Kylie Rae or did she copy you?

dressedforcomfort · 22/11/2023 18:16

Nobody 'owns' a name.

Very few names are truly original

Honestly, if this is all you have to worry about in life, be thankful.

Well in fairness that’s the kind of minor injustice many people post about here. There was another thread raging because OP caught sight of DH’s butt crack. Amazingly MN waded in ( with full vitriol) and deemed it insupportable behaviour.

lanthanum · 22/11/2023 18:18

Do you know that it didn't catch on more widely?

My parents chose unusual names which subsequently became more common - four times. It happens.
