bothered that another parent copied my childs name

This happened a few years ago when we lived in a remote area.
My child name was very uncommon and unique. I deliberately picked the name because it wasn't common and I didn't want her to share her name with a number of people. I don't want to say what it is because there are very few people in the world with it. As she got older, in assembly, she found out that someone in primary 1 had the same name as her and the parent had obviously heard of and copied her name. Subsequently, there were a number of others with the same name.
AIBU to be annoyed?

You're just guessing. Are you upset that your daughter is no longer 'unique'?

thewreckofthehesperus · 22/11/2023 17:39

So she heard the name, liked it and used it for her child, the same way you heard the name from somewhere, liked it and used it for your child?

Why is it unreasonable when she does it but perfectly fine for you? You're not even close friends or a family member with this person! You have no claim here.

Mygosh · 22/11/2023 17:40

I think that rather than feeling annoyed, you should feel honoured, that somebody liked your DC's name enough to call their own child the same. Your DC is still unique.

SoySaucePls · 22/11/2023 17:40

OP copying is the greatest form of flattery.

The person loved the name and you've set a trend!

Why not try to enjoy it?

If it was apparently such small place where everyone knew everyone how did you not find out that the other child had the same name until she started school at age 4/5 years?

Indeed!

How come, OP, that in this very small place where everyone knows everyone, you only found out about this when your kid went to school?

Is it Balonz?

You beat me to it 😂😂

Draconis · 22/11/2023 17:43

I chose a name that I thought was pretty unique. I only ever saw it on one baby name site out of the hundreds I looked at.
I'd never heard that name before but now it's such a popular name in the cultural circles I'm in.
So annoying. Especially when I drove past a business with that name too.

olivialennox · 22/11/2023 17:43

By that logic don’t we all ‘copy’ names when it comes to naming our DC, unless you literally made the name up

Rosscameasdoody · 22/11/2023 17:43

I don’t think you have enough to worry about.

steff13 · 22/11/2023 17:44

There is nothing new under the sun

YABU

TheresaCrowd · 22/11/2023 17:44

You say there's very few people in the world with her name.

So do you suspect people in other countries copied you too?

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 22/11/2023 17:44

Hee he, this pissed me off 23yrs ago. I called my boy Caleb. Didn't know of anyone called this. He was at nursery with another wee boy and his mum had a baby and called him Caleb, I was outraged at the time, like I owned the name! Now it's just, nearly as common as Jayden, Jaxon and Chelcee, 😆

infor · 22/11/2023 17:45

So embarrassing though when I call "Mercedes-Storm" in the park and a dozen kids turn round. There should be a law against it.

Aquamarine1029 · 22/11/2023 17:45

Unless they took your child whilst also taking the name, YABU.

Crazycrazylady · 22/11/2023 17:45

Oh dear god. I'm actually embarrassed for you. Every name that you have ever heard has been 'copied' from someone else. I assume this child in not in your child's class and are years apart .
You sound batshit .

Mrgrinch · 22/11/2023 17:46

This is hilarious.

Teder · 22/11/2023 17:46

Where did you discover this name?

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 22/11/2023 17:47

Priceless

wokbun · 22/11/2023 17:47

She's a child not a brand

SleepingStandingUp · 22/11/2023 17:47

You picked a unique name, which means you made a name up. Then there were a few people around the world with it (can't be other way round cos you said it was unique when you used it) so how did they hear about it? But the only one you care about is the Mom who was so desperate to be as awesome as you that she named her child in honour of yours? Did I get that right.

Yadnbu and if I was you I'd take it to Judge Rinder.

CarpetSlipper · 22/11/2023 17:47

I have a really common first name but I have never met anyone else even close to my age with it. They’re all starting to die off now and it hasn’t come back into fashion.
If you had named your child Sarah or Stephanie I bet they’d be the only one in their class.

TheresaCrowd · 22/11/2023 17:47

That'll be the name.

Batshit Junior.

ChesterAndRaoul · 22/11/2023 17:48

Have you tried not worrying about other people and just getting on with your own life?

Do you really want to waste your 'bothers' on something that matters so little?

MargotBamborough · 22/11/2023 17:48

catphone · 22/11/2023 17:19

It was a small place where everyone knew everyone, the parent knew of my DDs name and when she eventually had her own child she took it

She didn't "take" it, she used it.

Nobody owns names.

It is no less your child's name just because some other children also have the same name.

Nothing has been taken from you, or from your child.
