Friend won’t set up PayPal

dessertorchide · 18/11/2023 20:27

Friend bought some tickets for my family as well as hers. Need to pay her back £200. Asked her PayPal but she doesn’t have an account. Have told her it’s very easy to set up but she doesn’t want to and has given bank details. Only problem is I don’t have the money in current account and want to use PayPal because it links to my credit card. She doesn’t want to wait until end of the month when I will have the cash. Don’t know what to do.

Hmmm does anyone in your family have a PayPal account then u can pay from your PayPal into theirs, then they withdraw to their bank and transfer back to you and then u transfer to your friend?

Bertiesmum3 · 19/11/2023 20:18

Add a different card to your PayPal!

Sorry OP you seem to have been targeted by all the non PayPal users on here. And each with no offer of a solution but plenty criticism.

OP asked if she was BU.... you know, asking for opinions. Other posters offering their opinion isn't 'targeting' anyone.

I actually offered 3 different suggestions.
Lots of posters have.

As has been said several times, far more people don't have Paypal than do so the OP IBVU to expect her friend to set up an account she doesn't have and doesn't want.

OP said ‘don’t know what to do’

everythingthelighttouches · 19/11/2023 20:26

YANBU to have asked her about PayPal in the first place.

She absolutely does not need to get it.

She’s told you how she wants to be paid (bank account)

It is irrelevant who here has or has not got PayPal.

YWBVVU to try and persuade her to use PayPal anymore.

You owe your friend £200. You need to get the money to her ASAP even if that means you incur a cost. She could be incurring costs or restricted while she waits for this money.

In future don’t ask people to buy things for you if you don’t have the money free to pay them back.

MarchingOnTogether · 19/11/2023 20:43

Do you have a trustworthy mutual friend who you can send the money to via PayPal?
The friend can then withdraw it to their bank account and ping it over to the other friend

Tryingmybestadhd · 19/11/2023 20:50

I don’t use PayPal either , there is automatic transfers , revolut etc so I never use PayPal anymore and closed my account . You will need to withdraw some money from your credit card at your customer and pay . Sorry but you can’t expect others to just open PayPal or it whe services to your convenience

That's a random fact to know about everyone you know

Occupational hazard!

ChampagneVan · 18/11/2023 20:30

Sorry but that's your problem.

You owe her and you shouldn't expect her to set up PayPal just because you don't actually have the money to pay her.

Agree

alwaysmovingforwards · 19/11/2023 21:05

IGotItFromAgnes · 18/11/2023 20:36

It's not unreasonable for you to have assumed that she had PayPal- most people do.

I don’t know anyone who has PayPal, so it seems a weird thing to assume to me!

Same here. Everyone I know would just get the pay in details and balance transfer.

Pablova · 19/11/2023 18:06

Not true.
Only accounts requesting a credit facility have a credit search performed.

PayPal offers a credit facility inbuilt into its services. If you look at the PayPal terms and conditions it specifies that a hard search of credit files is made on application to open an account.

Deathwillbebutapause · 19/11/2023 21:10

PayPal haemorrhaged customers last year after announcing a policy to fine customers for their political views... or "sharing misinformation" as they labelled it.

They backtracked but I don't know anyone who still has an account there.

Rosscameasdoody · 19/11/2023 21:11

Bertiesmum3 · 19/11/2023 20:18

Add a different card to your PayPal!

Won’t make any difference. The friend still won’t be able to receive money sent unless she has a PayPal account.

Rosscameasdoody · 19/11/2023 21:15

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 19/11/2023 18:47

That is odd. I get an email from Paypal once in a blue moon telling me of changes in terms and conditions, and that's all. They are the opposite of annoying in my opinion.

Also, what do you mean "ebay doesn't use it anymore"? I have made ebay purchases in recent months and have paid for everything via Paypal.

Edited

EBay have parted ways with PayPal recently and have introduced their own payment system.

Reallyontherocks · 19/11/2023 21:16

Perhaps you should have offered to buy the tickets on your credit card and then she could have paid you back.

I wouldn't assume she had Paypal and as a PP said you should be using your credit card rather than paypal in order to get the credit card protection.

You let your friend buy something for you and you should have the means to pay. She might not be able to wait until the end of the month.

Do you have any savings you can access or even cash at home?

kneehightoacat · 19/11/2023 21:39

No. You owe money to your friend. Get cash or do a bank transfer

why should she go out of her way to open sn account with another platform she doesn’t need?

Smilencuddlesthenstab · 19/11/2023 20:16

Most?

Yes. UK population, 67 million. UK PayPal accounts, 20 million.

Most.

lemmein · 19/11/2023 22:00

*Yes. UK population, 67 million. UK PayPal accounts, 20 million.

Most.*

That figure includes under 18s who wouldn't qualify for a PayPal account anyway.

I'm quite surprised there's 20 million accounts tbh.

Deathwillbebutapause · 19/11/2023 22:24

It's not 20 million UK citizens each with their own PayPal account.

The site gets used a lot in micro money laundering and for activities ranging from catfishing / romance scams to people trafficking.

likethislikethat · 19/11/2023 23:03

Stop spending money you don't have on shit you don't need.

OP said ‘don’t know what to do’

The title is literally "AIBU - friend won't set up Paypal"

But still, I, and many, many others have actually made practical suggestions.

ithinkthatmaybeimdreaming · 20/11/2023 05:31

Rosscameasdoody · 19/11/2023 21:15

EBay have parted ways with PayPal recently and have introduced their own payment system.

First I've heard of it - I'm not doubting you, but I have made several purchases via eBay recently and saw no sign of a new payment system. Just used Paypal as usual, so if they have parted ways it must be very, very, recently.

stayathomer · 20/11/2023 05:34

Just take out the cash! I had PayPal for ages before I got Revolut and I got fed up of people saying ‘just get it’. No! I can transfer money online via PayPal or bank acc!!

user1492757084 · 20/11/2023 05:40

Put the money into her bank account or send her a cheque or hand her cash.
Paypal is not what I would ever join.

Can you hand her cash when you next see her?

eternalopt · 20/11/2023 10:40

Have you got a relative or friend that you could PayPal and they could pay her for you?

pollymere · 20/11/2023 11:33

I use my CC to pay for things including giving money via F and F. I contacted my CC company about possible fees I would get charged as I get warnings from PayPal similar to the walls in Labyrinth. They don't charge me any. Still getting the warnings from PayPal that I'll be charged hideous sums for using a CC by my CC Company. I think it must cost PayPal so they want you to use a Debit Card. This is why cheques used to be so useful!
