Friend won’t set up PayPal

dessertorchide · 18/11/2023 20:27

Friend bought some tickets for my family as well as hers. Need to pay her back £200. Asked her PayPal but she doesn’t have an account. Have told her it’s very easy to set up but she doesn’t want to and has given bank details. Only problem is I don’t have the money in current account and want to use PayPal because it links to my credit card. She doesn’t want to wait until end of the month when I will have the cash. Don’t know what to do.

First I've heard of it - I'm not doubting you, but I have made several purchases via eBay recently and saw no sign of a new payment system. Just used Paypal as usual, so if they have parted ways it must be very, very, recently.

you can still purchase using paypal but sellers now have money sent to their bank account rather than their paypal account.

Jeclop · 20/11/2023 13:39

Can you pay someone else via PayPal and ask them to transfer for you?

StoneWashJeansWithAMatchingJacket · 20/11/2023 13:43

Why can’t you just link your debit card to your PayPal as well? I’ve had more than 1 card linked to mine before, it really isn’t difficult. Then move the £200 from PayPal to current account (by clicking that option instead of the credit card) and transfer that money to your friend. I’m not seeing the issue? PayPal is handy, but if she doesn’t want to use it that’s her decision.

OP doesn't have any money in her current account so therefore wanted to use the credit card through PayPal. Still not the friend's responsibility.

If she wanted PayPal she'd have PayPal

MrsPCR · 20/11/2023 16:28

Can't you just PayPal yourself £200? Do you not have a partner you could send the money to and transfer it out to your bank? Or if it's that easy, set up a new PayPal to receive the £200 and transfer out. I have 2 PayPals for different things, easy enough to manage.

ChorizoDog · 20/11/2023 16:36

Setup a PayPal with different email address and bank account, pay yourself and withdraw?

littlefireseverywhere · 20/11/2023 16:45

Just seen your update, I’d talk to her & see what she says. Can you pay half now, half when you’ve been paid?

Sartre · 20/11/2023 17:07

I’d explain the situation with your car causing financial issues this month and see if she’s happy to wait a couple of weeks for the payment. If she needs the money ASAP and genuinely won’t set up PayPal (which is a bit crazy given how quick and easy it is) then you’ll either have to tell her to give the tickets to someone else or alternatively borrow the £200 from someone else to give to her, if you can.

Zebedee55 · 20/11/2023 17:08

I haven't got PayPal...too many scammers. Find another way.

you can't send money for friends and family from a credit card anyway

Yes you can. I do. And I haven’t been charged a fee or interest either.
having said that, I don’t use it for anything but paying and wouldn’t want to set it up to be paid.

I’ve had a PayPal account for over 20 years and never been scammed. It also offers more protection than most standard credit cards.

Anyone you send money to via PayPal needs a PayPal account themselves in order to access it. When you open a PayPal account they do a hard search on your credit file that leaves a record and potentially damages your credit rating. If OP sets up another PayPal account she would have to register a different bank account and credit/debit cards not used on the original or it would be flagged up as potential fraud.

And how would she register bank accounts and credit cards to the new account given that they have to be registered at the same address given for the PayPal account ? It’s asking for trouble.

So they haven't "parted ways" then!

I've also had a Paypal account for over 20 years with not one issue. A lot of posters are spouting nonsense on a subject they know nothing about.

No, all OP needs to do is take the money as a cash advance from her CC and pay it back when she is paid at the end of the month. The fee will be next to nothing. You should NEVER let someone else pay for something for you and then expect them to either set up an account they have no need of, or wait to be re-paid!

I never said they had. But the set up for sellers is now different. They no longer receive funds via paypal.

HTH.

Yes, they have. Sellers can’t use PayPal any more. When buyers use PayPal the payment is received into EBay’s own payment system where selling fees are removed and the balance paid to the seller. Neither seller nor buyer receive the protection previously offered by PayPal as the payment is converted to the EBay payment system with whatever protection that system offers.

I was commenting on a post by another poster who said "eBay have parted ways with Paypal" and then you responded to my comment, which was meant for them.

Pandajane · 20/11/2023 19:45

Wait.....you're paying your credit card bill in cash every month? Or....are you just scamming your friend to get a free payday loan courtesy of her bank account?

So there is no benefit to anyone for me to continue using PayPal on eBay then because that is the only reason I have it, I have only used it a couple of times in the past for non eBay stuff and that was to take advantage of 'the returns on us' which they don't do now. I had noticed the procedure was different when buying on eBay, probably from about the past year. I may as well use my usual credit card to pay and get the points.

howdoesyourgardengrowinmay · 20/11/2023 21:12

why cant you transfer money from your pay pal account to her bank account?

Rosscameasdoody · 20/11/2023 21:21

Because you can only transfer funds from your PayPal account into your own bank account. The only way to transfer funds via PayPal is if the recipient also has PayPal.
