Friend won’t set up PayPal

Friend bought some tickets for my family as well as hers. Need to pay her back £200. Asked her PayPal but she doesn’t have an account. Have told her it’s very easy to set up but she doesn’t want to and has given bank details. Only problem is I don’t have the money in current account and want to use PayPal because it links to my credit card. She doesn’t want to wait until end of the month when I will have the cash. Don’t know what to do.

So there is no benefit to anyone for me to continue using PayPal on eBay then because that is the only reason I have it, I have only used it a couple of times in the past for non eBay stuff and that was to take advantage of 'the returns on us' which they don't do now. I had noticed the procedure was different when buying on eBay, probably from about the past year. I may as well use my usual credit card to pay and get the points.

Ebay buyer protection probably isn’t as comprehensive as the average credit card. I use PayPal a lot because it has good buyer protection and saves having to disclose credit/debit card details directly to retailers.

Can to transfer to husband/partner/different friend or mum via PayPal, get them to bank transfer back to you, and then bank transfer to aforementioned friend?

So... link your bank account to your PP.

Its less of a fanny than her setting up a brand new PP account, and you get to choose on transactions where you source funds from (bank, pp balance, cc) so it will make no odds to you, but will mean this issue won't happen again.

The first post stated that she doesn’t have the money in her bank account, hence she wanted to use her credit card linked to her PayPal

GirlOfTudor · 20/11/2023 22:14

So you agreed to purchase something for £200 that you don't have the money for? Yeah, that's why your friends annoyed.

It didn’t occur to me that she wouldn’t have PayPal and in my circle it’s very normal to use PayPal for transfers after paying for one another for things like tickets because you can just send to their mobile number and it’s really easy. Hadn’t occurred to me to double check with friend that this was ok.

You can’t transfer from CC linked to PayPal into a bank account without the CC company realising you’re trying to circumvent cash advance fees and charging ~28% but looks like I’m going to have to as friend doesn’t want to wait.

I can afford the tickets - long story short had to buy a car this week and dealer didn’t take credit cards so totally wiped out current account incl overdraft which I haven’t used since I was a student. I’m not a scrounger.

But you can't afford the tickets can you? And you couldn't afford to buy a new car because you were planning to buy that on credit too. You didn't have enough in your bank account to buy the car and you went into your overdraft. If you got to the dealership and they say no credit cards, you should've left and thought about options you COULD afford. Not still going ahead with the purchase knowing you didn't have enough in your bank AND knowing you owed a friend £200. Now you don't even have £200 left.
I think you need to look into your spending habits and reliance on credit.

Riverlee · 18/11/2023 20:58

Can’t you just pay her with your credit card if you have her bank details?

You can’t do that, unless it goes through a payment processor like worldpay, PayPal, stripe etc

coldcallerbaiter · 20/11/2023 22:32

It is not about OP thinking PayPal is the best and only method, it is because the only money left is via the credit card, because a car was bought with all the bank money. If money was in the bank, PayPal probably would not have been mentioned.

As an aside, a dealer who will not take a deposit on a cc is trying to avoid you charging back if something goes wrong, I wouldn’t buy a car without that free and valuable protection.

Crazydonkeylady · 21/11/2023 17:37

You will clearly have to PayPal yourself to your bank account and then forward the money by bank transfer to her. It’s not her problem or responsibility to set up PayPal.

Could you transfer the money to your own PayPal/bank account and withdraw the money?

This. It seems all totally illogical. If you can transfer money to your friends bank account from your cc via PayPal, then you can transfer it to your own and withdraw it!

Yeah the idea is if she can use PayPal to pay her friend on her credit card then she can do that to her own bank account and send it to her friend like that. That’s the point.

Reallyontherocks · 22/11/2023 07:28

What did you end up doing OP?

Mamabear48 · 22/11/2023 08:26

PayPal it to yourself and and send it from your current account… I do this with a second PayPal account.

gingermoose · 22/11/2023 09:07

Can't you send someone else this £200 payment via PayPal (parent, sibling or other friend) from your credit card and then get them to transfer the money back to your normal bank so you can pay your friend?

Fluffybunniesandkittens · 22/11/2023 10:26

If the friend is receiving universal credit, maybe she knows that universal credit can request to look at bank statements and if they see a PayPal account on said statements, they then request PayPal statements to prove that you are not receiving an income through things like selling on eBay. Not providing this evidence is a payment blocker and maybe the friend doesn't want the hassle.

Bamboobzled · 22/11/2023 11:14

Pay your own bank account with your credit card (via PayPal) and then pay her from your bank account?

Ablar · 22/11/2023 11:31

You can't expect someone to set something up that they don't want too just because it's easier for you. Especially when it concerns money

RedPony1 · 22/11/2023 14:17

I'd have assumed she had PayPal too. All my friends have it, we ping money to each other via it all the time when out for food/events etc.

Frogggie · 22/11/2023 15:51

If you have loads of friends with PayPal, why not send the money to one of them and then they can transfer the money to their bank acct and either withdraw cash/send to you/send direct to the friend you owe the money to.

Lorralorr · 22/11/2023 17:50

dessertorchide · 18/11/2023 20:32

Something like 28% plus transaction fee to get cash from CC.

She buys on FB marketplace all the time so I assumed she had PayPal

Yeah but if you pay for the tickets on cc via PayPal it’ll be about the same cost no? Still borrowing the same amount

dessertorchide · 22/11/2023 18:05

Thanks everyone for mostly not being nasty. I never thought I would be in this situation - until you have to buy an unexpected car and can’t move money out of long term savings accounts quickly enough then you might hopefully never find out!

I withdrew cash from my CC and paid her. Thanks for everyone pointing out that obviously the 28% cash advance interest rate is the annual rate. It will cost me much less.

I am really surprised the amount of people who don’t use PayPal! I can’t imagine giving my CC details to dozens of online retailers or my bank details to loads of friends/acquaintances/FB marketplace buyers.

But you can’t transfer money to anyone via Paypal unless they also have a PayPal account.

NoThanksymm · 22/11/2023 22:18

How do you have ‘money’ in pay pal, but not real money?

you’re trying to force someone to get a whole new pay system! If it was ‘easy’ then it would be easy to get money out.

just pay your friend.

You do realise from an online retailer perspective you have much better protection using your credit card than PayPal? And that applepay/google pay give you much better security than PayPal? And if I didn’t trust my friends with my bank account details then I’m not sure I’d want them as friends… I’ve always seen PayPal as one of those last resorts for those that don’t have other options, certainly since eBay dumped it. But maybe I’m wrong

Singlespies · 23/11/2023 06:00

I don't have PayPal and it would be difficult for me to set up because there is a historic account associated with my email address but in my ex husbands name. So, to set up a PayPal account I would need to create a new email address. It is unreasonable of you. Can you not just go overdrawn or transfer the money from your PayPal account to your bank account.
