Friend won’t set up PayPal

dessertorchide · 18/11/2023 20:27

Friend bought some tickets for my family as well as hers. Need to pay her back £200. Asked her PayPal but she doesn’t have an account. Have told her it’s very easy to set up but she doesn’t want to and has given bank details. Only problem is I don’t have the money in current account and want to use PayPal because it links to my credit card. She doesn’t want to wait until end of the month when I will have the cash. Don’t know what to do.

Set up a second PayPal? Pay yourself (your current account) the £200 from your credit card and then transfer to her. You may need to set up a second email address.

This seems like a good idea OP

PearTreeBoat · 19/11/2023 15:22

Could you pay a different friend or your husband or partner £200 via PayPal then get them to transfer you the cash??

User18650674 · 19/11/2023 15:31

I have PayPal as I sometimes use eBay but I don't use it for anything else, I don't think you should expect her to set up an account for something that is in your interest. I get lots of emails from PayPal about their credit and pay in 3 and constantly changing terms and conditions and frankly its quite annoying.

Coyoacan · 19/11/2023 15:32

I cancelled my PayPal account because it wanted to take about a huge chunk of a payment a client was going to make.

OooohAhhhh · 19/11/2023 09:48

I don't understand - what do people think will happen if they open up a PayPal account? 😂

It's very easy to transfer cash around to family/ friends & strangers who you'd buy from for one time only, and you're protected should anything happen.

Bank transfer is old news, need to set up the new recepitent, need to confirm the authorisation, which is all time consuming etc etc.

People need to start living in the modern world as times are changing.

Modern world, Paypal is really old and annoying and something some sellers on eBay insisted on, eBay is the only reason to have it

User18650674 · 19/11/2023 15:40

Maybe OP shouldn't have let her friend buy the tickets when she hadn't the money to pay for them

I agree. 200 is a lot to be owed especially in the col crisis. I'd be furious if I was owed money and having to go thru all this to get what is actually mine

DysonSphere · 18/11/2023 20:35

Can't you simply transfer from Paypal to her bank account?

I haven't done it before but I think you can. Don't know If there's a fee.

This looks like a good option, doesn't look too expensive. Didn't know you could do it.

Rtc12 · 19/11/2023 16:41

Does someone you trust have PayPal you could pay them, then get them to pay you it so you can bank transfer to your friend?

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 19/11/2023 16:47

I've never heard of pay pal but it looks like something to avoid. Elon Musk was involved so I would not expect it to be particularly secure...

MassageForLife · 19/11/2023 16:56

Could you use someone like Western Union to transfer the money?

Therealjudgejudy · 19/11/2023 17:02

Hardly anyone I know has a PayPal account.

Always hearing stories about it being prone to hacking

How on earth would you know? Do you ask them?

I have no idea whether or not most of the people I know has a PayPal account.

SleepingisanArt · 19/11/2023 17:24

Ebay are moving away from PayPal- new sellers have to use the eBay payment system. I had a PayPal account, until it was hacked and they were very unhelpful. I buy and sell on marketplace- most people pay in cash and if I'm posting they do a bank transfer...

Aside from the whole PayPal thing I'd be a lot more worried about a car dealer who didn't take credit cards! That has red flags for me!

Neither of you are being unreasonable. You just need to work out a way forward.

I'd say to her she can either have the money now with PayPal, or on X date when you gets paid.

It's not unreasonable for you to have assumed that she had PayPal- most people do.

There are around 68 million people in the UK.

20 million people in the UK have a PayPal account of some kind: https://www.ionos.co.uk/digitalguide/online-marketing/online-sales/creating-a-paypal-account/

So, no, most people in the UK do not have a PayPal account and you are unreasonable to assume they have.

PayPal accounts – the advantages of the digital payment service

PayPal is one of the world’s largest internet payment companies. Who benefits from setting up a PayPal account? And how do you register?

You’ve never heard of the largest and one of the most secure global payment processors with an annual turn over of $30b per annum. ?

Elon Musk was involved in the initial set up of a company PayPal
purchased, over 15 or so years ago.

If you shop online theres
a very high chance the payment is processed by PayPal.

@ShufflingHedgehogs that's so interesting, thanks for sharing that statistic. I had assumed it was a much higher % of adults because I assumed most people have an ebay account and an attached PayPal account (used to be?) (almost, or perhaps actually?) inevitable.

Also because it is accepted so many places for online shopping, and because of the buyer protections it offers, I just assumed most adults do at least some online shopping, and most of those people would have an account for that.

Why would most people have an eBay account?

This looks like a good option, doesn't look too expensive. Didn't know you could do it.

Transferring funds on a credit card to a bank card is cash advancing and will incur a large fee and potential freezing of your account.

Rosscameasdoody · 19/11/2023 17:41

If she opens a PayPal account they will do a hard search on her credit file, which will leave a record and possibly affect her credit rating so I don’t think it’s reasonable to ask her to do this. You could transfer money to your bank account from your credit card and pay it directly into her bank, but it would incur a fee so I would check costs first.

It’s one of the largest global payment processors, and one of the most secure - offers buyer protection too. Elon Musk is nothing to do with PayPal.

You can’t. The person you are transferring to would need a PayPal account to receive the money - you can only transfer funds from your PayPal account to your own bank account.

EBay don’t use PayPal any more. They have their own payments system which is a lot more cumbersome and slower than PayPal. They also hold on to a sellers’ funds until they confirm that the item has been posted. Give me PayPal any time.

Until you realise that setting up another PayPal account involves a hard search on your credit file, which can affect your credit rating.

Not true.
Only accounts requesting a credit facility have a credit search performed.

I haven’t read the whole thread, sorry, but surely the 28% interest is an annual rate, albeit charged from the moment cash is withdraw to the moment you pay your bill. So assuming it’s a month or so that’s £2.80 / £100 advanced per month. Not sure where £50/£60 of fees come from?
