Friend won’t set up PayPal

dessertorchide · 18/11/2023 20:27

Friend bought some tickets for my family as well as hers. Need to pay her back £200. Asked her PayPal but she doesn’t have an account. Have told her it’s very easy to set up but she doesn’t want to and has given bank details. Only problem is I don’t have the money in current account and want to use PayPal because it links to my credit card. She doesn’t want to wait until end of the month when I will have the cash. Don’t know what to do.

It's not unreasonable for you to have assumed that she had PayPal- most people do.

I don’t know anyone who has PayPal, so it seems a weird thing to assume to me!

That's a random fact to know about everyone you know

Modern world, Paypal is really old and annoying and something some sellers on eBay insisted on, eBay is the only reason to have it

I do a lot (too much!!) online shopping, and on many sites Paypal is listed as a payment method and I often use it. It certainly is not limited to Ebay purchases, and how is it "annoying"?

I only use it for eBay as it doesn't give me any points like my credit card does, it's annoying because they constantly send emails for their credit and changes of terms and conditions every couple of weeks it seems. I will cancel my account now as it seems eBay doesn't use it anymore so I have no further need of it

iloveherons · 19/11/2023 18:24

sorry but that is on you. You want your friend to set up a PP account because you have cashflow issues. This is on you.

you are massively unreliable (unless this is a reverse - I cannot quite believe someone would reason that way)

Ilovecleaning · 19/11/2023 18:28

You can’t lay the law down to someone about which accounts they should have.

DinaofCloud9 · 19/11/2023 18:31

I cancelled my PayPal after getting hacked so I don't think it's at all strange not to have one.

lmjfu · 19/11/2023 18:37

I don't have a PayPal account and don't want one. I would be mighty pissed off if I paid for something and someone insisted they needed to pay me back via PayPal.

lemmein · 19/11/2023 18:39

I sell online op and have PayPal set up for that....hardly any customers pay that way though which was surprising to me.

Like you I regularly use PP to pay for stuff, I thought most people did, but it's actually quite rare. People much prefer to pay via bank transfer (which is fine by me because it's free).

I've never heard of pay pal but it looks like something to avoid. Elon Musk was involved so I would not expect it to be particularly secure...

I find this hard to believe. Even my mother has heard of Paypal and she doesn't do online banking, online shopping and only just about knows how to use a mobile phone. I've used Paypal for nearly years in my online business (I don't know anyone who does business online without it) and I've never heard a single person say it's not secure. We've had other issues with it as sellers, but never issues with security.

They stopped the return is on us which was one of the more useful things about it

Bugbabe1970 · 19/11/2023 18:44

It’s a you problem
I don’t have PayPal and many people don’t

That is odd. I get an email from Paypal once in a blue moon telling me of changes in terms and conditions, and that's all. They are the opposite of annoying in my opinion.

Also, what do you mean "ebay doesn't use it anymore"? I have made ebay purchases in recent months and have paid for everything via Paypal.

NeverForgiveMyself · 19/11/2023 18:59

I had a PayPal account once. I was then charged by them for a Uber in Paris. As I don't live in Paris, I challenged it. PayPal was not interested. Fortunately my bank was, they took the money back from PayPal and I closed my account. I won't have anything to do with PayPal now. Sometime that's a pain, but I don't care.

UsingChangeofName · 19/11/2023 19:06

I'm surprised how many people on this thread don't have PayPal

.......and I never cease to be amazed how often posters on MN are surprised that not everyone is the same as them.
As 2 posters have linked to, double the number of people in the UK don't have an account compared with those that do.

Edited

A PP had said eBay don't use it anymore, I have used it recently but I think the difference is you don't have to use it now whereas 10-15 years ago a lot of sellers insisted on it but eBay appears to be moving away from that now. I get constant emails telling me I have been chosen to use their credit and stuff like that, I would never faff about with that and I don't want to pay in three or whatever it is. They obviously make their money from this credit and are not making anything off me

Sorry but that's your problem.

You owe her and you shouldn't expect her to set up PayPal just because you don't actually have the money to pay her.

Did you think this was constructive or helpful to OP?

mumofdragons · 19/11/2023 19:20

PayPal the money to a friend or family member and get them to send it back to you via your bank account, then send it to your friend - easy

Mummadeze · 19/11/2023 19:22

I would suggest Revolut instead. It’s really good!

I'm surprised how many people on this thread don't have PayPal 🤔

I’m with you. Sorry OP you seem to have been targeted by all the non PayPal users on here. And each with no offer of a solution but plenty criticism.
It’s not that unreasonable to assume she had PayPal nor is to ask if it’s something you and your friends are used to

In hindsight, yes, you should have asked for her preferred method of payment but who really does that to a friend 🧐
You’ve been given some good ideas. Chose what is a compromise to both of you and don’t enter into a transaction like this with this friend again.
I wish you all the best.

Smilencuddlesthenstab · 19/11/2023 19:44

OooohAhhhh · 19/11/2023 09:48

I don't understand - what do people think will happen if they open up a PayPal account? 😂

It's very easy to transfer cash around to family/ friends & strangers who you'd buy from for one time only, and you're protected should anything happen.

Bank transfer is old news, need to set up the new recepitent, need to confirm the authorisation, which is all time consuming etc etc.

People need to start living in the modern world as times are changing.

This for goodness sake. Oh the rumour mill 😂😂

Twentyfirstcenturymumma · 19/11/2023 20:02

youveturnedupwelldone · 18/11/2023 20:39

It's not her responsibility to sort out a way to receive the money that works for you. You don't actually have the money do you if you need to borrow it to repay her.

Maybe next time you buy the tickets on your cc and she pays you back. But this time you'll have to find a way to get liquid funds to pay her.

This. PayPal can be a nightmare, lots of issues with it.

Assuming she had a Paypal account is just silly, sorry Op

UsingChangeofName · 19/11/2023 20:12

Sorry OP you seem to have been targeted by all the non PayPal users on here. And each with no offer of a solution but plenty criticism.

OP asked if she was BU.... you know, asking for opinions. Other posters offering their opinion isn't 'targeting' anyone.

I actually offered 3 different suggestions.
Lots of posters have.

As has been said several times, far more people don't have Paypal than do so the OP IBVU to expect her friend to set up an account she doesn't have and doesn't want.
