Friend won’t set up PayPal

Friend bought some tickets for my family as well as hers. Need to pay her back £200. Asked her PayPal but she doesn’t have an account. Have told her it’s very easy to set up but she doesn’t want to and has given bank details. Only problem is I don’t have the money in current account and want to use PayPal because it links to my credit card. She doesn’t want to wait until end of the month when I will have the cash. Don’t know what to do.

How do you have ‘money’ in pay pal, but not real money?

you’re trying to force someone to get a whole new pay system! If it was ‘easy’ then it would be easy to get money out.

just pay your friend.

She doesn't have money in PayPal she's adding it to her credit card which she will pay off after she gets paid at the end of the month

My main takeaways from this thread is that someone who is savvy enough to use the internet to post on here hasn't heard of PayPal and that weirdly multiple people have some kind of system for knowing whether all their friends and family have PayPal accounts. How does that work 😄

Why is your Paypal linked to your cc?

Why shouldn't it be. Mine is linked to my credit card. All purchases paid via PayPal come from there and the bill for the credit card is paid in full at the end of the month. Interest free payment for the goods and 5% interest earned on the money left in my current account. Win win . Maybe the OP does the same

Birdcar · 23/11/2023 08:48

Can you do a paypal transfer to someone else (family member maybe) who can then give you or her the cash?

stichguru · 23/11/2023 08:53

You owe her money, you pay her in the way she wants to be paid. REALLY SIMPLE!

Z1hun · 23/11/2023 08:54

Not every body wants a paypal account. You can't force her to get one. If you can't afford it on debit don't buy it on credit.

Hmmm I wouldn't really want to set up a PayPal account either but don't really see what other options you have. If you've explained it's either money now via PayPal or money at the end of the month via bank transfer that doesn't seem unreasonable to me.

Surely having this conversation before the money was owed would not be unreasonable, but after is a bit rude.

My PayPal is also linked to a credit card for the same reasons but OP is obviously living from payday to payday because if she had £200 in a savings account she could pay out of that, surely if you can want to buy £200 worth of tickets you must have some spare money somewhere.

Fieldofbrokenpromises · 23/11/2023 12:58

PayPal are utter cunts so I no longer have PayPal OP is BU

She explained that she has used all her money to purchase a car where she couldn't use her credit card so needed to rearrange her finances.it doesn't mean she is living hand to mouth . . The need for the car appears to have come after she asked them to buy the tickets And surely that is what a credit card is for short term borrowing for one off expenses .

I agree it's not ideal but I wouldn't lend money to someone if I wanted it back instantly without checking they could do this first. In similar situations it often takes my friends a few weeks to pay me back so I don't find OPs scenario very unusual, to me two weeks still seems quite timely.

Facebook marketplace you should use PayPal for your own protection

Paying a friend for something I owe, I would always use bank transfer personally. Never had anyone ask to do it by PayPal.

Credit card as mentioned previously offers protection and is worth using online.

Glad you sorted it.

A genuine question, but how is that better that just paying by credit card in the first place, from a cash flow / interest earned perspective? What does paypal add? As far as I can see it just takes away the protection a credit card brings for things that cost > £100? As well as reducing the cashback earned from credit card spend on some accounts. Are there places you shop that take paypal but not credit card? What am I missing?

PayPal offers comparable customer protection to that of most credit cards, including a chargeback facility if you have problems with a purchase. It also offers a payment facility which means that your credit card details are not disclosed to the retailer. That’s why I prefer to use it for online purchases.

I don’t think you do get comparable protection do you? Using a credit card gives you statutory remedies, but PayPal’s protection is just their policy and can be changed at any time. Martin Lewis warns about this very issue:

Reallyontherocks · 23/11/2023 20:02

@Rosscameasdoody I am not sure it is comparable

It's not unreasonable for you to have assumed that she had PayPal- most people do.

I don’t know anyone who has PayPal, so it seems a weird thing to assume to me!

Exactly, not even that many companies do. The University I work for won’t let us pay via PayPal except as a guest on our corporate cards
