To think that postbox toppers are an aberration and those who produce them should be shot at dawn (I should say 'light hearted' here but it goes against the grain)

That really.

Postbox toppers. Those crocheted monstrosities decorating every postbox within a 500 metres of GAILS bakery.

Why?

My AIBU is am I unreasonable for thinking they add no value to life and represent a huge drain on resources that could be better put to work creating reusable string bags.

All these people who know Gail's - WHERE ARE THEY BASED?

There are two near me - one in Wilmslow and one in Didsbury - both greater Manchester!

ShanghaiDiva · 09/09/2023 21:33

@Etihad
omg - the eyes!

There's another thread on here tonight about how awful door wreaths are. There's a lot of misery about tonight. If you don't like these things that's fine . If you stick your nose even further up in the air you won't see any of these things anyway.

MN has become the home of uniform misery, reminding one of Mao's China where everyone wore those ghastly boiler suits, the onesis of their day.

JayAlfredPrufrock · 09/09/2023 21:34

@IrateAndUnhinged
😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

neither. Asda. Tesco. Lidl.

KeepTheTempo · 09/09/2023 21:35

If you live within 500 yards of a Gail's, then you're in an expensive home in an area that's been gentrified within an inch of its life, and posting here might actually inflame an entirely new bunch of people to start crocheting as a form of urban resistance. 💪

(There is definitely no defensible eco angle, when anyone who is actually shopping in that Gail's undoubtedly has a larger carbon footprint for their summer holidays alone than the average knitter gets through in year.)

Personally, I enjoy them, the older I get the more I feel gleeful about a bit of naffness, and they keep the small DCs going on the walk to school (sadly less from appreciation than because they like to speculate how long until they get nicked. We're not a Gail's kind of area 😂)

Tinkerbyebye · 09/09/2023 21:35

YABU they cause no harm and lots love them

Just don’t look

Wilmslow is not in Greater Manchester.

Topseyt123 · 09/09/2023 21:36

I like them. They are funny.

AlexaCanYouHearMe · 09/09/2023 21:36

They are amazing, and very cleverly done. Why do you hate them so much? What an odd thread. And even more odd to mention this bakery. Confused

Flaskfan · 09/09/2023 21:36

bellamountain · 09/09/2023 21:26

You only get them in middle class towns. The older working class ladies are too busy working in Asda.

Definitely not middle class here!

Personally, I think they're a bit twee and messy; like knitting buskers. BUt I appreciate that they make people happy.

Although clearly not the person who set fire to one round here.

No, have seen Gails in Cambridge, Marlow, Beaconsfield….

So the Bettys of the South then?

They annoy me too (and other wool-graffiti stuff)! There’s a reason we don’t keep wool stuff outside, namely that it rains every third day and anyone knows a really heavy wool jumper takes about 4 to dry!

We keep sheep outside and they're made of wool, though usually not on top of postboxes

JudgeJ · 09/09/2023 21:39

Qilin · 09/09/2023 21:21

Never seen one either.
Don't think we have a Gail's Bakery either - never heard of it!

I think that this thread is sponsored by Gail's whatever, the vast majority had never heard of it before tonight!

greengreengrass25 · 09/09/2023 21:39

A lot of the wool used is acrylic though😀

Ladylalaboo1 · 09/09/2023 21:40

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams apologies, it's about 6 min drive from me in a Greater Manchester town so just assumed! Never been the best at geography!

I think that in todays world of uniform topperness we should celebrate the dysfunctional and odd.

I appreciate that this may be a minority view.

Don't have anything like that where I live as it is rough as fuck, they would just get vandalised or knicked so I only know of them as I have seen photos online. Some of them look funny and creative, I admire the skill as I can't knit or sew

ShanghaiDiva · 09/09/2023 21:41

south east

bobbinsnbows · 09/09/2023 21:42

There’s not been an armed robbery where I live (Waitrose and post box topper kind of place) this week, so thankfully I’m not near grumpy you, OP.
YABVVVU.

That figures, you'll not find Gail's in Little Hulton or Wythenshawe!

DisquietintheRanks · 09/09/2023 21:43

I think that they look a bit crap and then utterly awful when they've been rained on a bit but each to their own.

What really pisses me off is when people start importing their tat (crochet, baubles, windchimes etc) into the natural environment then expect you to be grateful for it. And get utterly outraged when you remove it.

IrateAndUnhinged · 09/09/2023 21:44

I do feel that GAILs is getting too much of the limelight here. I used it as a sort of mnemonic for a certain type of middle class obsession for looks over substance.

My bad.

I saw this one when I was away the other week.

Gosh. Is that you. Haven’t seen you since the class of 2018 threads.
