To think that postbox toppers are an aberration and those who produce them should be shot at dawn (I should say 'light hearted' here but it goes against the grain)

That really.

Postbox toppers. Those crocheted monstrosities decorating every postbox within a 500 metres of GAILS bakery.

Why?

My AIBU is am I unreasonable for thinking they add no value to life and represent a huge drain on resources that could be better put to work creating reusable string bags.

They have mini ones on almost every bollard on Cleveleys high street 😭

Can we get rid of everything that we personally think 'add no value to life', would there be much left??

Florence251 · 09/09/2023 21:26

We have a small group in out town, who produce such toppers as the seasons change. Currently a beach scene with perfectly coloured mustard sand, blue sky, stripy deck chairs and children playing on the beach. How do you stifle the smile, the warmth spreading from your heart and the gratitude to those who use their skills to spread a little joy to others?

carpool · 09/09/2023 21:26

I don't crochet but I do knit. I always have leftover wool from different projects and I would imagine a lot of toppers are made using up such leftovers therefore not necessarily wasteful. We used to have a succession of toppers on our local box but not for a while now - I think it was maybe a lockdown thing when people were stuck at home bored. I actually quite liked them, although some were definitely better than others. Last Christmas we had one with a Christmas tree which lit up!

bellamountain · 09/09/2023 21:26

You only get them in middle class towns. The older working class ladies are too busy working in Asda.

HangingByYourFingernails · 09/09/2023 21:27

There are two quite different types of places that have these: "villages" which have GAILs and Waitrose, and actual villages which have retired ladies at a loose end while they wait four hours for the next bus.

I love a GAIL cinnamon bun or Parmesan chicken roll myself, and even have the app but blimey the price!

The attached photo should give you an idea of the general style.

I’m in Oldham. I doubt we fulfil Gail’s demographic.

Greggs yes.

Potentialmadcatlady · 09/09/2023 21:27

They do that too… and tiny prem baby outfits and angel baby cribs and gowns…

No MN for starters 😁

FWIW we had postbox toppers in our town years before Gail's arrived!

What/Who is GAIL'S?

JayAlfredPrufrock · 09/09/2023 21:28

A poncey bakery apparently

aspirationalflamingo · 09/09/2023 21:28

Do you work for the Gail's marketing department, op?

MrWoodhousecanfeeladraught · 09/09/2023 21:28

I think they’re really lovely, especially the Christmas ones. It’s great that people make the effort to create these to give other people pleasure. It’s also great that at least in my home town, everyone appreciates them and no one has ever vandalised one; they make me feel cheerful every time I see one.

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/09/2023 21:29

I don't really understand the guinea pigs (?) wearing hula skirts surrounded by giant prawns.

LizardLizard · 09/09/2023 21:29

We don’t have a Gail’s, but we do have a WI, so I suspect they’re behind it.

The really good ones on top of the post boxes are fine, the shitty small ones or crap scarves draped on fences and benches are the knitted equivalent of graffiti.

Poncey bakery with yummy, but overpriced, cinnamon buns.

LBOCS2 · 09/09/2023 21:30

We are miles from a Gail's, but we do have postbox toppers and a Waitrose.

I quite like them. They're cheerful, I'm in awe of the skill and time it takes to make them, and they literally don't impact my life in any way at all so if they make someone happy to create them then who am I to complain?

YeOldeBuxomWench · 09/09/2023 20:17

If you have big norks, they could come in handy if there is a bra shortage.

Ladylalaboo1 · 09/09/2023 21:30

I don't really have an opinion on the postbox toppers. There are some near me and I genuinely just see them and kind of think oh nice and then don't give it a second thought really Hmm GAILS bakery on the other hand I absolutely adore! Their cinnamon buns are something sent from heaven Halo

Heads on spikes, lovely. 🤔

Do you have a Waitrose or a Booths? It's not the same but it attracts a similar demographic. I can't speak for the toppers of course. #ToppersSpeakForThemselves

That should come with some sort of warning. #Terrifying
