To think that postbox toppers are an aberration and those who produce them should be shot at dawn (I should say 'light hearted' here but it goes against the grain)

That really.

Postbox toppers. Those crocheted monstrosities decorating every postbox within a 500 metres of GAILS bakery.

Why?

My AIBU is am I unreasonable for thinking they add no value to life and represent a huge drain on resources that could be better put to work creating reusable string bags.

That rationale implies that anyone has the right to deface/ decorate anything in the public realm. Presumably you don't think graffiti on the box would be ok. It's 'art'. It brings colour. What's the difference?

With a little dolly ballerina in the middle?

I knew they reminded me of something!

They're the ones. Very tasteful, too.

You just take a topper off?

GoddessOnTheHighway · 16/09/2023 17:49

@Nanny0gg news reports of toppers being removed suggest that it makes people very angry. You can remove graffiti by painting over it. It's just a bit more of a palaver.

Yes, please do. Thanks for offering.

GoddessOnTheHighway · 02/12/2023 11:21

Apologies for reviving this thread #SorryNotSorry but came across this shocker not 3 mins walk from GAIL's bakery last night. I'd had a small glass of wine and it was triggering to say the least.....

If you are going to pollute my street with crochet monstrosities then please at least have the decency to remove them when the subjects look like they are slightly worse for wear having been on a pre Xmas bender.

OMG

What is it?!?

Electrolens · 05/12/2023 09:34

Yabvu. I’m looking forward to the nativity scene round our way! You should ask your local knitter to crochet a heart warmer for your stone cold heart.

bruffin · 09/01/2024 16:13

Yeah I saw the council told them to take it down.

LaMontser · 09/01/2024 16:54

Some absolute shitehawk has knitted scarves and attached them round the young trees in our local park. It annoys me every time I walk past them. There’s a hospital across the road. Knit hats for the prem babies or something. Don’t vandalise trees by pinning/supergluing scarves to them.

I'd unknot and loosen them and let the birds use them for nesting material in the spring. The magpies shredded my neighbour's doormat a couple of years ago, so a few daft scarves shouldn't present much of a challenge.

ItchyMaryHavingAFag · 10/01/2024 10:04

They’re bloody hideous.

Also, why does ‘women’s art’ have to be twee and grim and make me feel itchy when I see it? Why can’t it be about metal work and fire and brimstone?

I’m also fed up of the self-satisfied smugness of the women foisting it upon the rest of us. I have one in my life and it is not a ‘gift’ to receive her monstrosities. She does it so everyone says how very clever and talented she is.

Anyway, you’re not unreasonable, OP. Bin the bloody lot of them.

And I give you: 💩 on a caramel coulis

Isn't that supposed to be a beehive?

Admittedly, it's not very good 🐝

Verv · 10/01/2024 12:03

I think they give people something to do with their craft, and a sense of community which can be vital for those who are lonely or socially isolated.
Because of that i'm quite happy to have my retinas seared occasionally.

LenaLamont · 10/01/2024 12:09

When I see children pass the the two toppers between the main road and the primary school they are always excited to see them. It feels rather churlish to object. Some of the toppers have been really original.

There's some twee nutter community-minded soul who is putting fairy doors and pixie houses all through the woods at the local park. I think it's ugly crap in what's an otherwise beautiful natural space. The under 6s in the neighbourhood think it's exciting and magical.

I can supress my inner environmental purist for the sake of small children having fun.

Trinity65 · 10/01/2024 12:12

lolll

I can take or leave them

I thought of this Thread just a bit before Christmas as I noted a Post Box Toppers Facebook group.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 10/01/2024 12:18

I hadn't heard of this until today. Verdict from me is that they are naff and stupid looking. Very childish. But its somehow also a quintessentially British endeavor 😂. Where else would you see this?

I do dislike them, but also don't really care that much about it. It's a fad. It'll pass.

Now I want to find the door wreath thread. I loves a good moany thread I does 😂😂

IrateAndUnhinged · 21/05/2025 17:46
