To think that postbox toppers are an aberration and those who produce them should be shot at dawn (I should say 'light hearted' here but it goes against the grain)

That really.

Postbox toppers. Those crocheted monstrosities decorating every postbox within a 500 metres of GAILS bakery.

Why?

My AIBU is am I unreasonable for thinking they add no value to life and represent a huge drain on resources that could be better put to work creating reusable string bags.

@JudgeJ no Gail's, however I grew up in wythenshawe and family still live there and funnily enough there is a postboxtopper outside a local newsagents/ post office there and has been for years now!

YABU for not explaining what a postbox topper is of posting a pic!!!

I had to Google it as I was so confused😂 never seen one in SW London where I’m from!

TellingBone · 09/09/2023 21:48

We've got one near our Greggs. I feel this is a cut above.

gearedup · 09/09/2023 21:48

The thing is, GAILS do a very good salmon and rye sandwich.

I hadn't realised they were responsible for postbox toppers, though I will now have a fundamental re-think.

I went Elsewhere recently which is not within GAILS web, and I saw a topper there too. But it did make sense because there was also a shop which sold a very small tub of cream cheese for £6.

Yes, it’s me! Alive and well and living near a town with toppers but no Gail’s.

@IrateAndUnhinged

Wow you are a grump.

meditated · 09/09/2023 21:49

I knit and crochet. I only ever use natural fibre yarns, recycled / organic cotton. I'd never spend money on plastic yarn to then spend hours making something out of it.

Knitting/ crochet is not weather proof and shouldn't be just left outside for days and days. It is a waste and a big and unnecessary one. And I also like post boxes the way they are better.

(I'm clearly no fun!)

What’s the connection with Gail’s?
I know of 2 branches of the bakery and no regular postbox toppers around here.

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams apologies, it's about 6 min drive from me in a Greater Manchester town so just assumed! Never been the best at geography!

To be fair, lots of people think some Cheshire places are in Lancashire or Merseyside. Smile

My neighbour who moved here last year moved from Warrington, (Cheshire,) and she said that quite a few people around here (North Midlands,) think because that's near Liverpool, that it's Merseyside also. To be fair, the River Mersey does run through it!

Someone regular updates one outside DDs nursery and I think it's wonderful. The kids love going outside to look at them and talk about them. They're harmless and add a bit of colour to the world!

Wtfishizzat · 09/09/2023 21:54

I was with you till you started on about a drain in resources and string bags.

EggInANest · 09/09/2023 21:54

IrateAndUnhinged · 09/09/2023 21:44

I do feel that GAILs is getting too much of the limelight here. I used it as a sort of mnemonic for a certain type of middle class obsession for looks over substance.

My bad.

Don’t you dangle Gail’s before me and then pull the (crocheted) rug from under me!

I live in a particularly scummy corner of S London which nevertheless harbours a colony of Topper Tricoteuse. I got all excited thinking a Gail’s would surely follow in a frenzy of regeneration and gentrification.

Now you say there is no connection.

My baked goods will be forever Iceland.

😢🤬

anunlikelyseahorse · 09/09/2023 21:54

Awwww, I wish we had them, I think they are lovely. There are some really talented people out there. My kids would love seeing these dotted about our local area.

TooOldForThisNonsense · 09/09/2023 21:54

Aw. I like them!

Ladylalaboo1 · 09/09/2023 21:54

@AlexaCanYouHearMe Yes! Thankyou! Doesn't make me feel as daft Blush

Loadedbydeath · 09/09/2023 21:56

Unreasonable and a party pooper. I think they're fun, and around here are used to raise money for local charities.
