To think that postbox toppers are an aberration and those who produce them should be shot at dawn (I should say 'light hearted' here but it goes against the grain)

That really.

Postbox toppers. Those crocheted monstrosities decorating every postbox within a 500 metres of GAILS bakery.

Why?

My AIBU is am I unreasonable for thinking they add no value to life and represent a huge drain on resources that could be better put to work creating reusable string bags.

I just came across this. I rest my case.

Oof. That's a bad one.

newnamethanks · 21/05/2025 20:07

I like them a lot. They make most people smile. What's wrong with a bit of folk art ?

OK you have me there. Thats hideous, also what is stuffed inside there 😳looks sus😳

BIossomtoes · 23/05/2025 09:01

I usually defend them but that latest example is … actually, I have no words.

Stroopwaffels · 23/05/2025 09:05

I would like to see it from the opposite angle @BIossomtoes as I suspect that might tell a different story.

TipsyRaven247 · 23/05/2025 09:12

Why wait for dawn?

Pigsears · 23/05/2025 09:32

I have never had negative comments about my toppers.

@Stroopwaffels I doubt anyone would seek you out to tell you they didn't like them

EmpressaurusOfCats · 09/09/2023 20:24

Doing them in wool would cost a bomb. I’d guess acrylic.

And acrylic won’t shrink.

I enjoy seeing them, and if I could find a knitting pattern for the base (can’t crochet) I’d make a 🎄one for the postbox in Gdcs’ road.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 23/05/2025 09:52

Talking of street crochet creations, these (life size) were seen last December in Hawes (N Yorks) High St. IIRC they raised a lot for the local air ambulance. I was told that previously the same ‘yarn bombers’ had done life-size Wallace and Gromit and raised ££££ with those, too. 👏👏

FFS why isn’t my pic still not showing? A life size crocheted Father Christmas and Rudolph - MN, please sort it!

newnamethanks · 23/05/2025 10:42

That's wonderful! Well done everyone who contributed 👏 👏

anon666 · 25/05/2025 08:24

YABU. We have them and no Gail's.

However, I now live in hope that the arrival of Gail's is simply a matter of time, as we have umpteen of these things on every street corner.

My position on it is that I really want to like the things. I can see they have been made with all good intentions.

But I don't. They're hideous. They're essentially vandalism made of plastic. They're "cutesy" and I secretly hate them, but you'd never catch me saying that in public.

I feel guilty for thinking this.

Locutus2000 · 12/09/2023 20:48

Last one!

To be fair, someone else has then graffitied it, maybe encouraged by the original defacement. 🤣

I've made a couple. One for remembrance day, one Christmassy one, think I did a school holidays one too. Most people who make them (and knit as well as crochet) use acrylic yarn rather than wool because it doesn't stretch in the same way and is cheaper.

Most crafters will deconstruct toppers after use, and will reuse the base for something else, or repurpose in other ways. Crafters are not wasteful by nature.

I have never had negative comments about my toppers.

As a fellow crocheter and knowing how expensive yarn is, i agree waste is always minimised.

I love the toppers, I'm so impressed by the skill

We keep sheep outside and they're made of wool, though usually not on top of postboxes

Made of wool - just made me imagine a lot of crocheted sheep all over the fields...

Sharptonguedwoman · 25/05/2025 09:56

Definitively YABU. Harmless fun for people.

muddyford · 25/05/2025 10:57

AInightingale · 09/01/2024 17:06

I'd unknot and loosen them and let the birds use them for nesting material in the spring. The magpies shredded my neighbour's doormat a couple of years ago, so a few daft scarves shouldn't present much of a challenge.

Edited

The trouble with artificial fibres in nests is that chicks can get caught up and never get free.

Reduxrabbit · 25/05/2025 23:00

No Gails and no toppers here far, far west country where the Roman’s didn’t get to either (arguably)

Crispynoodle · 25/05/2025 23:08

I love looking at the yarn bombing

Thanks for bumping the thread OP i found this one quite recently but hadn't been able to find the thread to post it in.

Did anyone on here go to see the knitted re-creation of the D-Day landings? It's an astonishing achievement, immensely touching and a wonderful creation. It's equivalent to the Bayeux tapestry. Admiration and congratulations to anyone that contributed.

ViciousCurrentBun · 26/05/2025 08:40

@newnamethanks there is a tapestry that’s over 80m long of the D Day landings in a museum in Portsmouth.

We get some post box toppers and it’s most definitely not upmarket where we live it’s an ex mining area with lots of deprivation. Still have pound bakeries round these parts.

newnamethanks · 26/05/2025 11:39

Thank you Vicious, I didn't know that. I'm about 20 miles from Portsmouth and will seek it out.
