To think that postbox toppers are an aberration and those who produce them should be shot at dawn (I should say 'light hearted' here but it goes against the grain)

That really.

Postbox toppers. Those crocheted monstrosities decorating every postbox within a 500 metres of GAILS bakery.

Why?

My AIBU is am I unreasonable for thinking they add no value to life and represent a huge drain on resources that could be better put to work creating reusable string bags.

YABU
What harm are they doing?

Fredthefrog · 09/09/2023 20:26

I love them. My town has massive knitted installations regularly. They are real works of art. They bring joy to the kundane day to day. Ours are also auctioned off for charity.

I don’t know what you are talking about do you have a pic?

A particularly egregious example.

I have never seen one, nor have I heard of Gail's bakery.

Precipice · 09/09/2023 20:25

I've never seen one.

Whereabouts do you live that they're everywhere?

Within 500m of a GAILS

YABU, they bring a bit of cheer to everyone (well, most people). In Chippenham town centre, there are mini ones on the street bollards.

miserablecat · 09/09/2023 20:28

FWIW we had postbox toppers in our town years before Gail's arrived!

wendywoopywoo222 · 09/09/2023 20:28

I love seeing them. Lots of time and talent goes into making them.

UncleHerbie · 09/09/2023 20:28

YABU 🧶🧶🧶🧶🧶

Mountainhowl · 09/09/2023 20:28

There's someone around here who makes them for the postbox when there's something special going on, we've had Easter, queen's jubilee and possibly a Christmas one so far. I like them, they make me smile and the kids like to see them on the school run when there's one there.

MagicClawHasNoChildren · 09/09/2023 20:31

We have a Gail's Pantry AND our local postbox was besmirched with one of these. Is it a Gail-related conspiracy?

wendywoopywoo222 · 09/09/2023 20:31

Love this one

I saw one the other day that looked like a 💩 sitting amid a caramel coulis.

liberate my local postboxes from this tyrrany

I have never seen one of these and I've never heard of that bakery.

Stroopwaffels · 09/09/2023 20:32

Also on the "not eco" thing - I am in a group for postbox toppers online and most people scour charity shops and similar for yarn. I think of the three I have created I only actually bought yarn once, and that was green yarn for the remembrance topper as I needed quite a lot, in military khaki.

Prelapsarianhag · 09/09/2023 20:32

I think they are really cute, but I don't understand the 'why' of it. I am very old and maybe missed the memo.

LoobyDop · 09/09/2023 20:32

YABU. It’s nice that people care enough to make them. They make me smile.

wendywoopywoo222 · 09/09/2023 20:32

And this one 😊

You see if I had the time/energy/inclination to crochet I wouldn't inflict it on the wider world.

I'd make little figures of my enemies and stab them with a crochet needle in the comfort of my own home.

If you’re only making for yourself, then you’d get bored pretty quickly. I inflict my crochet on the rest of the world, well my friends, it’s an act of love. If someone has handmade you something, it’s taken hours to actually create. That doesn’t include the hours they spent picking a pattern they think you’d like, picking colours you’d like. They’ve thought about making something nice for you for hours. Someone making toppers is doing for a love of their community, wanting to make it a better place. I don’t disagree with anyone wanting to make their community a nicer place as long as they doing it legally.

Also, it’s a hook, not a needle. Knitting is with needles. If you’ve spent house creating a doll in the likeness of your enemy, you probably won’t want to ruin it. Even if you hate them.

IrateAndUnhinged · 09/09/2023 20:35

I didn't wake up one day, learn origami from YouTube and then start to decorate my local street furniture with laughing frogs.

Why are postboxes now available for all to express their 'art' to the general public???

OP posts:
TawnyLarue · 09/09/2023 20:36

I am DESPERATE to learn crochet. I can’t do it. If I could, I’d crochet loads of stuff for the NICU. Hate and octopuses. Wouldn’t waste time on postbox hats (which are not a thing here)

Walesagogo · 09/09/2023 20:36

I love them and think some of them are very clever esp the ones that are built up. Remember there were some good ones for remembrance day in particular a soldiers head and a another with a horses head.
