Postbox toppers. Those crocheted monstrosities decorating every postbox within a 500 metres of GAILS bakery.

My AIBU is am I unreasonable for thinking they add no value to life and represent a huge drain on resources that could be better put to work creating reusable string bags.

They make me smile but YANBU to loathe them if that’s what floats your boat.

I am outraged by more traditional stuff on the whole, but there is always space for people to hate something new albeit in a lighthearted manner.

They annoy me too (and other wool-graffiti stuff)! There’s a reason we don’t keep wool stuff outside, namely that it rains every third day and anyone knows a really heavy wool jumper takes about 4 to dry!

Omg harsh. I work in a town with toppers and every single day, I look at them with awe and wonder 🤩

If they are genuinely made of wool, surely they would shrink in the rain and become teeny weeny egg cup toppers?

YABU it keeps our local knitter busy, appreciated and feeling part of the community. She replaces it almost monthly so no looking shit here 🤷‍♀️

Well it worked, you got me googling Gail’s bakery.

You see if I had the time/energy/inclination to crochet I wouldn't inflict it on the wider world.

I'd make little figures of my enemies and stab them with a crochet needle in the comfort of my own home.

Maybe in Spain but other than today pretty much we are too cold for shrinkage. (Opposite of other shrinkage problems 😉)

I've made a couple. One for remembrance day, one Christmassy one, think I did a school holidays one too. Most people who make them (and knit as well as crochet) use acrylic yarn rather than wool because it doesn't stretch in the same way and is cheaper.

Most crafters will deconstruct toppers after use, and will reuse the base for something else, or repurpose in other ways. Crafters are not wasteful by nature.

I have never had negative comments about my toppers.

I think they're quite amusing. There's a lovely Autumn themed one with pumpkins near me, and a Teletubbies one!
