To think that postbox toppers are an aberration and those who produce them should be shot at dawn (I should say 'light hearted' here but it goes against the grain)

That really.

Postbox toppers. Those crocheted monstrosities decorating every postbox within a 500 metres of GAILS bakery.

Why?

My AIBU is am I unreasonable for thinking they add no value to life and represent a huge drain on resources that could be better put to work creating reusable string bags.

Someone should make one depicting the MN massive salad.

See how they like them apples.

ILoveChocolateandCoffee · 09/09/2023 22:34

There is alot of money, time and planning goes into the postbox toppers. I think they are lovely and cheer me up when I see them.

Just looking at it would fill me up for a week! 😉

AlexaCanYouHearMe · 09/09/2023 22:40

There are so many that have been so beautifully made.

Thought I would post a few to cheer you up @IrateAndUnhinged

Maybe, but as the general public are also commenting on this thread, then we can also give our appreciation for them too, after all it's good manners, and considering how much effort etc has gone into making them, they are lovely creations.

HoggyTruffle · 09/09/2023 22:46

Don't be agitated OP.

Take up a relaxing hobby like knitting or crochet. You can make yourself a useful string bag. Or a post box topper...

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 09/09/2023 22:46

I don't like them either. What a waste of wool!

If knitters are so keen for something to do then why not use that wool to knit blankets for sale for charity - or squares for Woolly Hugs? I imagine that discrete, non-fanfaring knitting is not what's wanted by people craving public validation.

The toppers don't harm, I suppose, but they are essentially litter that has to be cleared away by somebody as the knitters never seem to round them up and dispose of them to landfill where these then go.

CoolShoeshine · 09/09/2023 22:49

People who make them are clever af. Unfortunately we have no such people where I live. Need to move to the vicinity of a Gail’s.
I’m imagining that’s a Bakery where Gail Platt works.

WednesdayLounge · 09/09/2023 22:49

They are all over the town I live in too and I e never heard of Gail's Bakery so guessing somewhere different (we have a Greggs). I feel nothing about them tbh, sorry to be a fence sitter 😂

And yet, the couple of us on this thread who have made these are talking about washing, dismantling and reusing. No landfill.

YANBU. Horrible ugly germ infested monstrosities.

Haha, germ infested? Were you intended on licking the top of the post boxes or something?

MasterBeth · 09/09/2023 22:53

I like the OP's vehemence. I don't despise them but they a bit fucking twee or, like the disembodied soldier's head for remembrance, a bit fucking vile.

Notagains · 09/09/2023 22:22

YNBU
I don't se the point of them surely that effort and expense would be better put into something useful.

Said by someone posting on MN.

Endlesssummerof76 · 09/09/2023 22:54

Those are beautiful. Sadly, I haven't seen any in real life.

Hillfarmer · 09/09/2023 22:55

I seem to have missed the consultation on whether this country’s perfectly good postboxes should have unsolicited knitted objects rigged on top of them?

Who decides?

They’re shite.

Why does some random knitter imagine they are entitled to foist their questionable taste on me? They’re wank. Self-congratulatory crochet crap that clutters up the place.

Just like graffiti or fly-tipping - it’s somebody deciding to uglify the landscape for their own purposes.

Snip snip snip…that’s what I’d do to the awful things.

And don’t get me started on those big flappy inyerface plastic poppies on lampposts that we get to endure for six weeks every autumn.
