To think that postbox toppers are an aberration and those who produce them should be shot at dawn (I should say 'light hearted' here but it goes against the grain)

That really.

Postbox toppers. Those crocheted monstrosities decorating every postbox within a 500 metres of GAILS bakery.

Why?

My AIBU is am I unreasonable for thinking they add no value to life and represent a huge drain on resources that could be better put to work creating reusable string bags.

YANBU I've not seen any where I live. But when I've seen pics online I just think they could put they're crochet skills to much better use. Like making the octopuses for premature babies.

No idea why people are so offended about not having heard of this Gail's chain. I don't have them near me either, but surely the fact that the OP said 'Gail's bakery' made it pretty clear she was talking about a bakery called Gail's. What more do you need to know?

To me, the OP read as if there’s a link to the presence of Gail’s bakery and the postbox covers. It’s just to clarify that for many of us, there’s no link in our locations.

I know people who do both.
But then, surely instead of posting on MN, you could be putting your time to better use too?

It is interesting because for me this image is proving my argument.

but if no one uses the creations you advocate , then that make's them by default a wasted creation ?

Thesearmsofmine · 09/09/2023 23:00

They’re twee but I don’t hate them. I really don’t understand why someone yarn bombed trees in one of our local parks, I like to see the trees not your yarn creation that’s been pulled to bits by teens,

Wiii · 09/09/2023 23:01

I'm surprised they don't get stolen

some do, depending on the area

JayAlfredPrufrock · 09/09/2023 23:02

Why? Who would want them and for what purpose?

They do. Quite frequently.

well then if some people we not vandal's, then the creation would be intact

@Hawkins0009 might I gently suggest a trip to the opticians to check the strength of your reading glasses.

I am not at all advocating for them. Not even a little bit.

some presumably like the designs and want to keep them, some are like the op and think omg, the poor post boxes, how dare people enhance and make them more beautiful

BestZebbie · 09/09/2023 23:03

Near us there was a Christmas postbox topper trail around the village and evidently different people had been put in charge of different postboxes and were now engaged in a deadly rivalry to outdo each other.

One particularly memorable one had electronics built in so that when you stood in front of it, it detected you and played a festive tune while the sails of a mini windmill turned in the background.

I presume this sort of thing is how Midsomer Murders kicks off in an area.....

Blinky21 · 09/09/2023 23:04

On my top ten list of things I hate about England, along with anything with Keep Calm and Carry On written on it

"It is interesting because for me this image is proving my argument."

"My AIBU is am I unreasonable for thinking they add no value to life and represent a huge drain on resources that could be better put to work creating reusable string bags."

so if your argument is its better to make the string bags, then what purpose is it if they are not used or wanted ?

And yet, the couple of us on this thread who have made these are talking about washing, dismantling and reusing. No landfill.

I'm sure you do, you've just said so. I don't believe this to be the case for all of these. We have these toppers here. Talented knitters undoubtedly but they end up looking awful and nobody removes them other than the refuse crews; I've seen them do it.

I've never seen people remove those bedsheets with sprawled greetings either, getting sodden and dirtier every day. That's just attention-seeking littering with zero talent involved.

I don't hate them, I just don't like them. My view might be coloured by the Covid debacle and rainbows festooned/displayed/abandoned everywhere. I personally don't appreciate it when others appropriate public space and don't clean up after themselves, perhaps that's the crux of it?
