To think that postbox toppers are an aberration and those who produce them should be shot at dawn (I should say 'light hearted' here but it goes against the grain)

That really.

Postbox toppers. Those crocheted monstrosities decorating every postbox within a 500 metres of GAILS bakery.

Why?

My AIBU is am I unreasonable for thinking they add no value to life and represent a huge drain on resources that could be better put to work creating reusable string bags.

From your Google image, it would seem not!

The name is just capitalised on the shop sign, but it's 'Gail's' in all the articles.

Lots of shops use that type of lettering for shop signage but it's not meant to be used in written communication, it's not an acronym.

(I have a lot to say, it seems, on a bakery I heard of 10 minutes ago!)

I think they're handy as a signifier that you're in a naice area. If you live within walking distance of a post box topper it adds 5k onto the value of your house. 15k if there's also a Gails.

They wouldn't last 5 minutes where I live, but I enjoy seeing them in the posh area I work in. I'll try to find some pictures.

@AlexaCanYouHearMe I think postboxes are beautiful as they are. It's like putting a wooly hat on Michaelangeo's Davide.

It really isn't. Postboxes may be nice, but there are an absolute shit ton of them and the vast, vast majority don't have toppers on them. Comparing them to Michelangelo's David is bloody ridiculous.

I love them and I wish I had the talent to make something similar. The ones close to me are usually very elaborate and only up for a few weeks at a time so don't get the chance of to look shit after a while.

Someone stole some of our local ones (not me, honest !) and the local NHW made such a fuss about it, far more than they did when a teenage girl was being hassled by a man in a van - absolute waste of police resources trying to find a postbox topper thief imo

For some people on mn, everything is about germs. Most of us who make toppers wash them after use and reuse the bits/yarn numerous times.
