To think that postbox toppers are an aberration and those who produce them should be shot at dawn (I should say 'light hearted' here but it goes against the grain)

That really.

Postbox toppers. Those crocheted monstrosities decorating every postbox within a 500 metres of GAILS bakery.

Why?

My AIBU is am I unreasonable for thinking they add no value to life and represent a huge drain on resources that could be better put to work creating reusable string bags.

YABU
I look at them and think some clever person has made that

Ladylalaboo1 · 09/09/2023 22:09

@PolkadotsAndMoonbeams yes, seems that way! Cheshire sounds posher so I'd keep clinging 😂

EarringsandLipstick · 09/09/2023 22:10

I'm in Ireland. Never heard of postbox toppers but I love these! They're amazing, how creative!

I think this is the essence of Englishness to me, really quaint and lovely and just ... nice. In my stereotyped mind this is all happening is Miss Read-style villages.

Question about Gail's - why the block capitals? And I assume there's no direct connection, it's just used as a signifier, like Waitrose seems to be?

I'm afraid OP YADBU!

EarlGreywithLemon · 09/09/2023 22:10

I love them. Even more so because my three year old loves them. We have one nearby with changing toppers, and we sometimes take a roundabout route back from nursery so we can look at it. I love seeing her get excited about them, so that’s a good enough reason for me.

Stop Motion Love GIF by Mochimochiland

If anyone from Greggs marketing team read here, they’re going to be up all night plotting a yarn bombing coup.

7eleven · 09/09/2023 22:12

I like them.

DiscoBeat · 09/09/2023 22:12

They're lovely! We have a few in our village.

VivaciousRadish · 09/09/2023 22:12

I can’t crochet, or even knit really, but I love seeing them, and admire the makers

Hawkins0009 · 09/09/2023 22:12

so based on the ops perspectives,

all christmas decs canceled
all Halloween decs canceled
no bunting

Good for you

I agree OP. If people want to cheer stuff up with twee crochet why not do it on ugly things like bike racks, rather than beautiful things like post boxes. As for the abomination that is putting crochet on tree branches, who ever thought wool was nice to look at than trees?

RightOnTheEdge · 09/09/2023 22:13

You would hate it where I live OP! It's only a small market town but every postbox and bollard is topped with one.
They change theme every few months or when there's a big event.

No Gail's bakery or Waitrose though sadly.

@AlexaCanYouHearMe I think postboxes are beautiful as they are.

It's like putting a wooly hat on Michaelangeo's Davide.

Unnecessary and not what anyone asked for.

@IrateAndUnhinged

Can't work out at the moment, if you're being serious.......... or taking the piss/winding us up......

I am hoping it's the latter, otherwise you have my sympathy and pity..... For being so curmudgeonly and miserable, that you get angry and wound up at something so simple and yet so wonderful and cheerful.... And I hope your year starts to improve soon. ❤

Where in anything I have written have I said 'No bunting'. This is a discussion about postbox toppers. I think you may have inadvertently strayed onto the wrong thread.

It's the brand , however, just googled and apparently we should be typing GAIL's !

Bibbitybobbitty · 09/09/2023 22:16

What is GAILS?
YABU for not enabling a vote.
Quite like the toppers locally

Trinity65 · 09/09/2023 22:17

For Gods SAKES

Just google GAIL's as its already well established who they are.

Bigtom · 09/09/2023 22:17

Do you mean aberration or abhorration? [Misses point]

SpidersAreShitheads · 09/09/2023 22:18

Redwineislife · 09/09/2023 22:08

I love them, my children and I really enjoy seeing the toppers before and after our (somewhat stressful) shopping trips!

We love them too!

My (teenage!) children love to look out for the toppers, and my DD takes photos of them when we find a new one. We don't have Gail's Bakeries here, but we've got the toppers outside the post office in the village and also in our local Tesco car park.

They're harmless and intended to be cheerful. I think it's a wonderful thing to do! I've never heard anyone moaning about them before - really does show that even the seemingly most innocuous things will upset someone!

And for the PP (OP?) asking what about those people who hate postbox toppers - well, the good news is that there's not a topper on every postbox, so you can go and gaze at those undecorated ones to your heart's content. Leave us to admire the woolly ones 😅

Middleagedmeangirls · 09/09/2023 22:18

I love them. And yarn bombing. But the creators should def remove them when they start to look manky.
