MIL and brunch…

Nikee20 · 28/08/2023 18:58

We were at in-laws today for a brunch thing. We stayed in a hotel and live 3 hours away and we were eating at theirs before we drove home.

MIL said she’d do sausage buns so we had a very light breakfast so we didn’t fill up.

Arrived at theirs and there were 8 sausages for 4 adults and 1 child.

She split them 1 sausage each in a hot dog bun for each adult, 2 sausages for her son (my DH). Then DC was given another sausage.

Son was then offered the spare one.

So I was fed less than my 8 year old DS.

So my question is - is this perfectly reasonable or is she crazy?

YABU - this is fine
YANBU - she is crazy.

OP posts:

im confused with how this was split.

this is what is in my head
3 adults got 1 sausage. =3
1 adult and 1 child got 2 sausages -=4

so there was a sausage going spare? Is this right? I’d have stolen that spare sausage

Ha ha. I'm a maths teacher and I literally went back to check that. I suspect 'the men', so dad son and FIL were all given a double sausage 'penis portion' and MIL and OP were given dainty 'laydeez portions'...if they could manage them.

ShrinkingSusan · 29/08/2023 01:41

Penis portions for the men are usually accompanied by tiny portions, way less than a normal portion, for the women, too.

I once saw someone here say they were served one potato by their MIL.

Tourmalines · 29/08/2023 01:53

Wow , that was such a measly brunch . My son , DIL and grandchild would not be impressed with that I can tell you. Lol . They get the works when they come to mine, and it’s quite frequently. I guess I spoil them 😂😂

Copperoliverbear · 29/08/2023 02:46

Next time go to m and s or waitrose and take a picnic lunch and dish up for everyone, just say we will bring our own. X

Invited the in laws for lunch, Six fish fingers chips and peas. 6 fish fingers between four adults, DH and his dad got two f/f each, mil and me 1.5 each, half a dozen chips each and spoonful of tinned peas. Condiments were individual sachets from various cafes they visited.

I have an aunt who is a competitive under eater.

She once served 5 salmon fillets between 7 adults and 2 children. Plus a single pack of tenderstem broccoli and a tablespoon of mash.

But she calls her adult daughter 'fat pig' as her nickname (daughter is just on 5 foot and possibly 6 stone) and means it.

I understand brunch to be a meal that substitutes both breakfast and lunch, that is eaten late morning or midday. It is therefore more substantial than breakfast.

Typical brunch dishes:

  • Buttermilk pancakes with fresh fruit and ice cream
  • Eggs Benedict
  • Avocado toast with roast tomatoes and chilli flakes
  • bagels with smoked salmon and cream cheese.

To make it clear to other readers who aren't aware of the nuances of brunch.....this is a middle class brunch. A working class brunch is a full english, but just later than usual. 😉

Niftyswiftie · 28/08/2023 19:23

A hotdog is a bun and sausage though. What do you class as a hotdog?

So glad you asked! I thought this too.

Bun + sausage = hot dog

You do realise that men are supposed to eat more don’t you?

So many women are overweight and unhealthy because they eat the same amount in the name of equal rights

As a general rule, yes, but there are lots of exceptions. I’m six foot tall and I burned 3000 calories yesterday. Penis portions would suggest that I should be given less food than a 5’7” man, which is a nonsense.

A middle-class brunch can also be simply a full english, but having the buttermilk pancakes too afterwards because if it's brunch then brunch pudding is a thing but breakfast is usually just a one-course meal.

Honestly for me brunch has always been "we got up late and have been dossing around all morning, it's now noon and we haven't eaten yet so let's have a fry up and call it "brunch" to avoid being seen as lazy bastards".

I have found my people!!

Bun + sausage = hot dog

A hot dog is specifically a frankfurter-type sausage in a bun. A fried or grilled "normal" sausage in a bun isn't a hot dog its a sausage in-a-bun

WaitingfortheTardis · 29/08/2023 08:12

@JaukiVexnoydi Interesting, our hot dogs are always made with normal sausages as none of us like frankfurters. I do still consider them hot dogs though.

There was a spare - the 8th one that was offered to OP's DH but he refused after looking at OPs face. OP also didn't ask for it as she felt she couldn't What isn't clear is "who ate the 8th sausage?"

OP needs to clear that up

Brunch is between breakfast and lunch so it wouldn’t be like a meal

Noooo brunch is INSTEAD of breakfast and lunch, it's 2 meals in one!

But what if it's a 'normal' sausage in a hot dog bun?

And for that matter, what if you put a frankfurter in a round bun?! Grin

2Rebecca · 29/08/2023 09:30

I dislike cold food so if I was going to have a chicken nugget would want a hot one. If there weren't definitely going to be any left over then I wouldn't have mentioned the others would get some until she had finished. Otherwise I'd have given them 1 nugget each before she put her sticky hands in them and then if any left over she could have more but divided up fresh food is much better than cold left overs someone's hand has been in. Food is either individual or for sharing

Headabovetheparapets · 29/08/2023 13:28

JudgeRudy · 29/08/2023 01:29

I'd imagine a Penis Portion is a larger portion that's offered to Penis Holders ie men.
It tends to be something old women do. My mum would do this especially at Xmas. Shed offer those last few potatoes, or extra Yorkshire pudding to the men. Even a last slice of takeaway pizza would be placed on a man's plate.
These could be old overweight men who had sedentary jobs, not young fit manual workers.

Ah thank you @JudgeRudy that makes sense🤗🤗 & yes now you mention it yes I have older relatives inclined to this behaviour🤣🤣 xx

No, brunch REPLACES both breakfast and lunch, and so is a substantial meal.

Yes our hotdogs are normal sausages in rolls

OP is the only one who mentioned brunch and now everyone is running (away) with it.

MiL said sausage buns and that’s what they got.
Tbh I can see she would be pissed off.

”DiL turned down an already paid for full hotel breakfast and then expected me to run around supplying it myself”

Daffodilsandtuplips · 29/08/2023 16:19

Appetite does decrease in age, well mine has anyway but I still cater as normal when family come over. They all help with dishing up or help themselves if it’s a buffet type thing. The only time it went pear shaped was when my dd miscounted the plates and forgot about me. Everyone chipped in with food from their plates so I didn’t go hungry. I made sure I was first up for desert though .

No, it isn't, is it?

I thought it was a combined meal, late breakfast/early lunch not a between meal snack!

Poppingmad123 · 29/08/2023 18:35

Is she trying to insinuate you need to lose weight? 🤣
